In which Hank sings the oldest song we know of...the Seikilos Epitaph. Most songs from this period were written with only the lyrics, but the Seikilos Epitaph, buried as part of a funeral, contained an unmistakable chord chart. And so, 2000 years later, I can still sing it for you.
Here the Seikilos song on the lyre...possibly a little bit more likely of an interpretation. • Video
And here's Hurrian Hymn #6, the oldest piece you're ever likely to hear, though it's incomplete. • The Oldest Known Melod...
And here's where you can buy my album:

As someone who teaches Classics, and knows enough Ancient Greek to have read the New Testament and a bunch of Erastophanes, the pronunciation was painful, but it wasn't actually AS bad as some modern people trying to pronounce ancient Greek.
@melissaarcher1898
@melissaarcher1898 10 жыл бұрын
I know that Hank made it sound a but more "modern", but I love the fact that the oldest song that we know of with lyrics doesn't sound too much different from some music today. The theme and the melody just show that even though our lives were radically different from theirs, human nature will almost always remain the same.
@vlogbrothers
@vlogbrothers 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean, learning it and figuring out how to arrange it was really weird because it doesn't follow most of our normal rules of music. But I shaved some edges off and figured out the chord progression (a very common progression) and suddenly it sounded like it could've been written yesterday. I feel a little bad for taking liberties but, y'know, it's music...cover songs are always interpretations.

***** Don't feel badly. You're kind of like Bach, taking a Renaissance chorale tune and arranging it in a tonal context (not quite). Thank you for talking about ancient music. Sometimes people act like music began in the 1950s or something.

What makes it least "alien" is that it is transcribed in the diatonic genus. There are fragments of pieces which are enharmonic and would be microtonal by our standards and they sound quite strange. Take for example the Orestes stasimon, which is probably older.

I cry every time I listen to this song, because it makes me feel so connected to all the people who have lived. It's a message we hear over and over again. Carpe Diem Yolo. It makes me think about the man and how much he must have loved this woman to have this song written and put in her grave. Our lives go fast but they are such a gift, and it's important to dance while we have the chance.

Wow, Hank! I can't believe I found this before you, haha-five years ago. I was in seventh grade, wondering why I was becoming incredibly apathetic to pretty much everything. Then I heard the hymn and started weeping. I don't know why. Maybe I was amazed that it was so old, maybe because it touched my soul or whatever makes a human. I remember putting my head down, closing my eyes and just feeling it. And I remember being really happy that my family was out, because that would have been embarrassing... and really hard to explain. "No, mom, nothing's wrong. My deepest essence of self was just moved by an incredibility beautiful song that likely touched thousands of people thousands of years ago... What's for dinner?"

Just a bit of info for those who care, some of the earliest written out songs were plainchant. God would 'speak' to Monks and priests and they would write out what he told them in Neume, a type of early notation not too far removed from the one we are familiar with today. This would then be sung by the monks. That's just about the only thing I remember from my degree. lol

Hi, just to add that the system of neumes (which people would be familiar with if they've ever seen Catholic illuminated chant manuscripts) were not used until the Middle Ages. The epitaph was written in Greek letters with dashes and dots. There's a picture on wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_of_Seikilos

AHH I am a Musical Archaeologist and it makes me SO EXCITED that you covered this topic Hank! I'm studying ancient soundscapes/ archaeoacoustics and translating old Egyptian and Roman musical notations from papyrus onto a modern stave.

Ok so this is the first song that is in my Musical History and Literature textbook and I really love your version of it, Hank! The recording of it is actually much slower and has a different accompaniment! I honestly wish you were one of our teachers!!!

Someone probably wrote this already but the funny thing is that the 'Yolo' message of this song wasn't even the earliest yolo. In Gilgamesh, there's this barmaid who tries to help Gilgamesh get over the death of Enkidu (his partner in bromance). Who, as you'd have it, got killed when Gilgamesh rejected and insulted a goddess. Actually, speaking of Greece-Mesopotamia comparisons, most of what we find funny about Grecian mythology funny was even more hilarious in Mesopotamia. If you can believe it, the pantheon was even more petty than Olympus. For example, did you know that the first draft of humanity was wiped out because they were too loud and the gods couldn't sleep? Or that we only got brought back because the gods realized that without us they'd have to do their own work? Ah, memories One of the reasons I enjoyed history.

I love this video, probably because I'm a musician and I'm studying ethnomusicology. It is the best. I am curious though how you decided what chords to put with the melody, as they had very different modes back then? Or was it on the chord chart?
