Almost everyone has seen at least one of Degas' many works portraying dancers, since they are portrayed in some of his most famous works.
But do you know why was he so interested in dancers? And why were these works so important?
And are you familiar with the sinister and sad stories that took place behind the scenes?

I was about to try to duplicate Degas' "The Star" in order to practice with pastels (Learn from the Masters), but now that I've listened to your explanation of the backstory of the dancers, I will now have a very different experience as I work with this image. I'd paid no attention to the dark figure by the curtain, but now see his significance. Thank you for this.

I'm 2 yrs late but tik tok brought me here also but from recent videos and given that context the paintings and particularly the 14 yrs, are really creepy. Like...😢 and im sure a theory made up to sound crazy that actually tracks about him being Jack the Ripper isn't true, but the paintings are creepy. His personal life and beliefs are evidence enough that the dark, menacing forms are worse than sponsors...idk im creeped out completely.

Thank you so much! I am having my school-leaving exam on Monday from Art and Culture and this really helped me with impressionism.

Those poor ballet dancers, how awful to be subject to human trafficking snd paedophiles like that. I wonder if the ballet schools ever acknowledged or made any attempt at repererations for this dark history, I very much doubt it. Probably just say thats just how it was back then... Also I heard that Marie/the little dancer was also fired because of the sensation and negative press her sculpture caused. I wonder which is true. There was a really good historical novel based on Marie's life, called 'The Painter Dancers' by Cathy Marie Buchanan, which I highly recommend, based on a lot of research she did on how the ballet schools functioned back then. Would make a great film.

I thought Degas was wealthy. How did he have no money? Trying to understand.

a lot of artists back then didn't make a lot of money. when they passed away their paintings became famous and went for a lot of money. I hope this helps you. only some artists make a lot of money while still alive.

His family got into debt so he could no longer rely on family wealth, had to rely on selling artwork after his dad died leaving a lot of debt.
