The Rio Grande Depot in downtown Salt Lake City was once one of the finest train stations in the west. After the last train left in 1999, the tracks were pulled up, in favor of a new intermodal hub a block and a half to the west. The Rio Grande Plan proposes a way to return rail service to the Rio Grande Depot, which would become the new central transit hub for Salt Lake City. Benefits include the restoration of the historic depot, the permanent closure of 4 and a half railroad crossings in the downtown area, the opening of 50 acres of industrial land for new urban development, and the reuniting of communities that had been divided by railroad yards for over a century. I love this pan and would love to see this happen. I hate those overpasses and all the railroad crossings. Most of downtown is also an eye sore and a complete waste of space. This is especially true for the west side. The city, county and state leaders definitely should get behind this idea.

Contact the architecture department of Utah valley university! The plan looks great and it would be great to see a proposal that is also respectful of the historic community to which the rip grand station belongs. It goes hand in hand with the walkable cities mentioned in your videos. I hope this comes to fruition!

Please tell me that your plan for filling in the existing surface rail yards includes dense housing, multipurpose zoning, AND A COMMUTER BIKE PATH!

Hello Grant, currently we are not proposing any specific uses for the 50 acres. That decision will be up to the city and its residents, and is still a long way out. But it is fun to imagine the possibilities, and as a bike commuter myself, I would love to see more dedicated bike infrastructure!

Wow so simple! What would construction look like?
@CSLenhart
@CSLenhart 8 ай бұрын
Construction would be fairly intense, with 500 West being closed in sections for weeks at a time. Thankfully SLC streets are wide enough that cross streets could be closed in phases (ie, the north half is closed for 1 month, then the south half the following month) so that traffic is never cut-off completely. What worries me more than construction is the permitting and paperwork to begin construction. So many studied would need to be completed... anything less than a full commitment from city and state leaders to see this project through the study phase might mean a long, slow, agonizing fading away into the oblivion of transit planning lore... which only makes it more important that we keep the public involved as much as we can!

This is just Grande. When was the UP depot last used?
@CSLenhart
@CSLenhart Жыл бұрын
The UP depot was used by Amtrak between 1977 and 1984. In 1988 the railroad donated the depot to the State of Utah, but unfortunately this didn't include the land under the depot. When UP sold the land to Boyer in 1997 (to build the Gateway Mall), there was little the state could do to stop it. The state sold the depot to Boyer in 1999, the same year that the tracks were removed from both the UP and Rio Grande depots. Hopefully it will get a long and happy second life as a luxury hotel!

We live on the West side of the tracks watching all the apartment development growing . At the same time we are wondering why no one has addressed the homeless problem. Instead of trying to hide trains let's hide the unsheltered in a warm safe home. Then we can go from there. This it's more critical than the inconveniences of trains. It's only going to get worse if the state officials don't address the problem. Soon we will have a Los Angeles sized skid row in SLC.

Deal with the bums first. No one cares if everytime they go to the train they are harassed. I live around the block the neighborhood sucks!

That's what I'm talking about. Let's get some affordable housing first before we have another Los Angeles skid row where over several square miles are full of tents and hungry cold humans.

Including affordable housing close to transit is essential for sure. Smart development that is mixed density and mixed use will help also, for community cohesion, and overall transit is good for the working class and homeless because it allows them access to services and hopefully future work if they are able to move in that direction,l once they get the healing and help they need, without all the capital required to drive a car to get that access.
