Dimitrios’s talk reflects on the role of the architect in contemporary society. He discusses the socio-political dimension of architecture and he calls on architects to become thinkers of much bigger scale than that of the building. The city can thereby become the field of architecture, while the street can form the element that holds the urban fabric together.
Dimitrios Sotiropoulos is a registered architect in the UK and Netherlands,
as well as a Bath alumnus. He attaches sociopolitical depth to the
discipline of architecture, and challenges the traditional urban logic.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I only made it to about the 4:00 minute mark. We were learning this 25 years earlier in our architecture class. Listening to him felt like he was talking to a room full of random people with no knowledge of Architecture. Additionally, his concepts are basic entry level education at any reputable schools covering urban planning, space design, economic development, social pressures, etc. These are all covered in Architecture School in your first years of study. Also - he really needs a deeper study of Falling Water and Frank, he would have a very different opinion if he actually applied what he was saying here to that project. Also - he picked a very obvious and convenient city (Athens) to apply his conceptual framework. Try a different but much more sloppy city that does not easily fit your world view and see how well your approach fits Dimitrios. I studied the architecture and context in Athens with a design professor and traveled all around Greece in 1990. Try looking at counter example cities with around 3.7 million people: Busan City - similar population and similar density to Athens Berlin - similar population yet totally destroyed and rebuilt in modern times unlike Athens Yokohama - similar population yet vibrant economic base unlike Athens Cape Town - similar population yet very low density New Taipei City - similar population yet strictly proscribed growth & planning unlike Athens Finally - Architects think at a global level, react at a regional level, influence at a city level, design at a building level, and serve at a personal level. The say that Architects should "start" thinking at the city level forgets and insults what we have been doing already. It also ignores what Urban Planners do entirely. What about them?

I was a penniless waiter from Hong Kong before I became a registered architect. I worked for Ulrich Franzen, I.M. Pei, S.O.M., Gwthmey for a shameful minimal salary. I have not been able to find a job since 2001 when I was getting old. George Wu, AIA, ARCHITECT, NCARB, NEW YORK.; I advised My three half Irish grand children : don't ever be an architect. And my grand son. a straight A student at Fordham Prep School, was finally convinced recently. 2017-10-13

I agree and I am living in Hong Kong too. I was an architect and now I am a freelance comic illustrator. Thank God, money is not an issue for me as I have million in inheritance. It is a very boring profession and the pay is not attractive. Also if the firm has project they hire an architect with as little money as possible and if they cannot find project they lay you off.

You won’t find money when you look for it. Rather, money will only follow your passion.

This concept is kinda idealistic in my ears. Something you should have definitely involved in your speech is where the public space and and where starts the private. You might have found a solution to this but you didn’t mention anything. Also the space of the back yard is smth that people considered private when they bought their apartment. How can you change that since they paid for that private space which they can share with their polykatoikia s neighbors? The idea is not bad and I don’t think he claims that this concept is „his“. That would be bad for him. But I think there are some important points that were not analyzed as they should.

Like all the other comments, the thing I can't digest is him mentioning 'my idea/ my concept'.. these are basic knowledge that every architect, planne, urban designer, landscape architect should know and tons of work has been done on this topic.. in fact, people are already questioning these ideology and how it doesn't work and requires more layer of research.. at least he should do more research, and give credits or analyse the existing ideology before him... I dont understand why he is invited to give a TED talk. I would understand if he actually implemented these ideas somewhere but these are just ideas that has been there for years..

Isnt this urban planning 101 in all architecture schools? Here in Italy I know it is... in the 6 months of the course maybe only the last month you can start the actual project, before is all research...

I don’t know, it sounds a lot like totalitarian architecture to me. Architecture that is a bit too controlling for my taste.

Too bad we still haven't learned that on the long run is always better to collaborate and acknowledge our inspirations. What will happen when this guy will actually have to walk his talk and give solutions from his supposedly personal study? Will he go back to stealing info from people that actually research what he is presenting as his own work? It's such a shame this things still happen on a higher note such as Delft Technical University.
