Good discussion. I was out of CCG for a while, got back into them in late 2023. I've been buying bunch because I can. Part of it is FOMO. I look at out of print games that I liked that are hard to get now, so I buy it while I can, especially since it feels like companies don't print no where near the amount Decipher did. Supply dries up faster. I think another thing that brings these things back is the realization that newer is not always better. I'm at that phase with video games. Feels like most games have cash shops or season passes you have to buy or you need to create an account to play a single player game. Now I'm digging up older games and I've recently fired up Command & Conquer again. Didn't crocs become popular because of TSA? When we had to start taking our shoes off to go through airport security is when I thought I started seeing people wear crocs because it made that easier.

Really great points here. I meant to make the point that just because something is new doesn’t mean it is better. Modern magic is kind of a mess and a good example of that. Per crocs… I’m not entirely sure there. I do know they’re hugely popular with the youths. Not sure the origins of that.

What I'm hearing is that I should wait to work on my swccg collection until 2040+ when you (and others our age) downsize ;)

I think the rule of 40 is very hit or miss and is extremely IP dependent for example Star Wars the original Kenner action figures are going to be hitting almost 50 years old soon and they’re going stronger than ever whereas you know something like Battlestar Galactica kind of fell off, including anything that occurred after the reboot in the early 2000s. there’s probably something more to be said “resilient” IP can withstand something like 60 years because at that point you’re gonna be in your 80s so Star Wars going around there’s very few things that I think make it that far and I can only think of things really off the top of my head, which is Disney marvel and DC comics

Rosanski, huh? Nice! Another Polack, huh? So, ya know why so many Polish names end in -ski? Because they couldn't spell 'toboggan'. Ha!

This is a great point. I do think that even something like Star Wars can start to wane. It feels like there’s a bit of IP exhaustion. DC universe stuff feels very flat right now, for example. Marvel less so but it feels like comic book stuff is cycling out a little bit

@@boardmatt Sure, however, compare this to other huge IPs from the 50s and 60s like Looney Tunes, and I don't think that they stand the test of time; even if something like DC comics is flat or comics are waning, they're still a force in the industry that has persisted, which seems rare to me. I think that stuff from 40 years ago is still around, like Transformers, GI Joe, TMNT, and MOTU. I think that the commercialization of EVERYTHING in the 1980s, coupled with the ease of accessibility to information about niche products, means that I think stuff has a longer shelf life, but it will still end up being only a handful of resilient IPs that make it 60-80 years.
