I really appreciate these applications. When other belts show me these kata with no context it doesn't stick. It really helps to know what each movement could be doing. Thanks John and Nat for being a great victim.

Having an idea of what the techniques might be doing makes the kata much more real, instead of just making shapes.

Brilliant video John! As an instructor in Wado Ryu I personally have always felt the same way with the knive/spear hand strike and have interpreted it differently as a takedown exactly like your like your first example! In my personal experience this has really made some old school sensei's angry and insulted it has always seemed! This made me feel I was not alone in thinking this way so thank you mate, please do more of these! 👍

Thank you. A lot of the time I think those that don't like innovation or ideas different to their own are actually lacking in understanding themselves and can't comprehend that other ideas exist and "may" be better.

Great channel! Great content! This is the same interpretation that I was taught. What a lot of people don't realize, is that most of the movements in kata are throws, take-downs, sweeps, or joint manipulations. The creators of the katas intentionally froze movements just before the full technique was executed so prying eyes couldn't know what was truly represented.

This is great stuff - that takedown in particular. Really good idea and helps plug a big gap in my training as I've done very little work on takedowns.

Thank you sensei for the video, great application and movement. I received my shodan and nidan under yaguchi sensei from the jka/iskf. He showed us the same bunkai for the takedown And clearing of the hands. You are great at applying bunkai to freestyle for kumite sensei. Thank you for all of the great content. Truth is, we have no way of knowing what the "original" intended application for these kata moves are; that information was a casualty of war, sadly. However, we do know the original premise, and can work from there. Good job, keep theee coming.👍

Awesome techniques Sensei John 🔥 though just as a side note if you press just lightly with the spear hand just under your own Adams Apple you can feel even a light touch can be pretty uncomfortable Now imagine a full on spear hand strike to your opponent's Adams Apple or trachea it'll certainly make them gag it could even kill ..if you use the thumb as a stabbing weapon to the trachea it could easily cause life changing damage or kill its actually a military technique "application" To be used in kill or be killed situations on the battlefield Not to be used for civilian defence But you can find it in some military manuals on hand to hand combat ....in Japanese its called boshi ken ( thumb fist ) its also a technique from tai jutsu ...

Taking other more wild bunkai in too account it’s not to bad the last one I believe to be near perfect practical adaption though I don’t thing take downs should be added to the technique.
@jkgardiner4 ай бұрын
Kata contains many throws and takedowns, in this case the whole technique is being used including the stance. Funakoshi himself (founder of shotokan) taught a number takedowns. I'm interested to hear your idea why takedowns shouldn't be included though.

Great , John , Kara application so important , especially against 4 or more opponents at same time , we used to train this way too, also another technique from this move , is to protect your striking arm from being broken at elbow joint , by protecting joint with up turned palm , from the leading push down arm , initially , because if opponent turns when you push down he comes from side and brings up double block to smash elbow joint ,, the palm up from your hand prevents elbow being broken , quickly , allowing you to counter again , I like your tutorial , your application is one I taught my daughter to full affect , saved her life , long ago and double handed blocks strikes very useful for women when countering strength from men , love your application it works ,,

@@LeinonenHannu oh yes ,it does work against multiple opponents , especially at least 4 coming at you , from different directions , each kata the basic hian katas are all designed this way , first left defence then right then left forward then rear behind , the first basic kata was just. Gedan barai then oi zuke steeping forward then turn. Gedan barai , the step forward oi zuke , then turn left same basics again then behind. Good basics, yes it does work for instilling reaction timing awareness against multiple opponents , Kata , is great training ,

I understand that we would like to know what different techniques in kata are for, but isn`t it thinking backwards? Kata was a note book to remember techniques that was taught. So person doing kata should know what and why they are drilling. Yes, we lost the actual techniques, but would this mean that we need to make katas from techniques we learn. (Most likely compinations or self defence situations.) I have seen also katas from very basic techniques.
@jkgardiner4 ай бұрын
The students need to learn why they are doing techniques within Kata in order to make them a valid, useful exercise. The most common way students learn kata is they begin with the movements (in a kihon fashion) then they will work on the application of the techniques. How would one work on the application without first learning the technique? I'm talking from a perspective of training pre existing recognised katas (my style in particular is shotokan) if you are talking about creating Kata then of course the application should be in mind first.
@LeinonenHannu4 ай бұрын
@@jkgardiner When I started karate, we did learn techniques first in kihon form and after few months we started our first kata.(Pinan Nidan). I don`t recall ever been show a bunkai for any kata. It was more about form of a technique than function. I did Wado ryu and some say that wado ryu does not use bunkai. (Which is funny). But I was more interested in competition karate (50 years ago:-) Now I’m all about staying healthy and fit.

@@jkgardiner I am trying to create a kata type of form for wrestling. Just want to see if kata is effective as a learning tool. My first impression is that it might be useful, but only in a very early phase of learning. After remembering compinations you need partners reactions to make techniques effective.
