G-Gauge M-Measurement S-System. one of 2 such vehicles on CSX. It puts artificial stress in different directions on the rail to simulate a passing train and measures the amount of deflection caused by said stress to determine if tie, spikes and anchor systems are functioning as needed.

Its actually the CSX snack loco out on its daily refreshment run to all the big, hard-working locomotives.

I worked on one when I was employed by WW Williams as a generator tech. It has a bunch of measurement and detection gear on it to detect faults in rails. One operator has one sweet job. That thing is like a motor home inside. Very cool.

It's a high tech geometry car. You should see it at night when all the lasers are on measuring track. It measures everything. Rail height, rail gauge, webbing, rail contour, etc. Ten years ago the geometry trains were several test cars lashed up together. Now a single unit does it all. The interior of that car is plush too.

If you can see, albeit very quickly, it does say on the side of the leading end GMS-2. CSX have two track geometry cars GMS-1 and GMS-2. The main difference being the position of the doors. 1 has doors at the cab ends and 2 has a door in the middle..

It is a self propelled geometry car. I see them every year along with the remanufactured pull behind geometry cars. Hell, I have even piloted one in the BV here in Florida

I think its a recording car which has on board computers to Annalise track faults and from this view the track has a lot of dips on it.

I saw one in Denver a few years back after they got finished laying new track along the southwest portion of the metro area. I think they can measure the levelness of the track and its right-of-way bed.

In this video it is running light, a geometry unit magnafluxes the rails an checks for hidden cracks in the rails, records the location so maintenance of way employees can check later.

Call me crazy, but it looks like some kind of armored car. Could be a quick and cloaked way to move heavy currency such as gold and silver -- and I mean lots of it -- without it getting primed for being stuck in traffic and such.

It is a Inspection i have one of these at my yard down here they use it to make sure all crossings malfunciton and there is no bumps down the Mainline and sidings etc.

Once upon a time the railroad meant something. Men had jobs. My Grandma's brother was killed on the horseshoe curve, her husband was killed on the Union Railroad in Monessen, PA. The B&O ran right past my aunt's house, and I remember the EMD F7s and how the ground shook when the trains went by. I remember the Freedom Train in '76, pulled by Reading 2101, I saw her proud and mighty when she came thru Pittsburgh. My Grandma lived on her railroad pension until she died in '95 at the age of 99. Nothing is the same anymore. All the railroads have gone to hell. The mills are dead. Detroit is following suit. Everything is gone to shit. Nobody seems to care.

It's going rather fast, but it's similar to the old Sperry rail inspection car. Basically, it's for determining rail quality, gauging, etc.

This is a basic track inspection car. It's purpose is to check the condition of the track. Most of them that I've seen go a lot slower than this.

This is a self-propelled geometry car, GMS-2. (Geomerty Measurement System, Car #2) You can hear the operator call the unit number @ 0:39. CSX runs 2 or 3 of these continuously over the system, on top of the TGC cars which are towed and take better measurements at higher speeds. These cars try to run each section of mainline once a quarter, not just after work is done. Aboard is usually the inspector for that section of track the roadmaster (or assistant) and maybe the division engineer.

They can detect shelling. That's when the rails rot on the inside. Not visible from outside.

Ah... Years ago when I lived in Virginia our house was fairly close to a double track line and we'd see trains go by all the time. But one day I remember seeing just a single engine go by light of a model I'd never seen before. This is pretty similar to what I saw. It must have been doing the same thing this one is.

Looks like we won't see Sperry cars as often anymore with these units in service now. Cool thing is that the box cab body style slightly resembles that of Australian box cab diesel locomotives.

you didn't show the cars undercarriage when it was close. It could be a rail detector car, a car that checks for broken or dangerous rail defects.

Its symbol is GRMS2 and its an advanced type geometry car. After it inspects a subdivision expect many slow orders.

CSX stands for "Chessie Seaboard Multiplied" The X is the multiplied. If they left it as CSX instead of CSXT the X would make it a leasing company such as HLCX, so they put in the T for transportation

Yep. Geometry/track checking car. I've got pics of one these(maybe the same) cars sitting in the Nashville CSX yard. It collects data about the tracks so they know what needs fixing.
