Diagnosing scoliosis is related to the area of the spine. We know scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, it will typically be greater than 10 degrees, and it will have some rotation. To confirm the diagnosis, a Cobb Angle analysis is done as well. These aspects are important when making a diagnosis, and they are combined with the location of the curve: cervical, thoracic or lumbar to help classify scoliosis.
Thoracic scoliosis is very common; however, scoliosis can develop in any part of the spine and more than one location at once. Patients often have three or more different curvatures when diagnosed with scoliosis, but only the biggest curve is emphasized.
Understanding the classification is very important. Due to the age of the patient, scoliosis can be classified as:
- Infantile Scoliosis
- Adolescent Scoliosis
- Juvenile Scoliosis
- Adult Scoliosis
Due to the type of scoliosis, it can be classified as:
- Idiopathic
- Congenital
- Neuromuscular
By degree of severity, scoliosis is classified as:
- Mild 10-25
- Moderate 25-40
- Severe 40 and above
By its location on the spine, scoliosis can be:
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common, where the root cause of scoliosis is unknown, representing over 80% of cases. In the adult stage, the most common type is degenerative scoliosis.
Scoliosis is segmented into so many different types and classifications to better define the treatment options available to patients that would be the most beneficial depending on their age, the origin of the curve, degree of progression, and location.
X-rays are a tool often used to help diagnose scoliosis and narrow down degree size and location. The one time X-rays are not as effective is to determine if there is an underlining neuromuscular condition.
Thoracolumbar scoliosis is known as such because of its location in the thoracolumbar area of the spine. This type of scoliosis is very visual, and asymmetry can be seen in the mid-section of the back, transitioning between the waist and the hips. This type of scoliosis responds very well to several conservative treatment due to its asymmetrical nature. This area of the spine tends to be more mobile than the rest of the spine, which allows it to respond better to conservative treatment.
Before deciding on a more invasive approach such as surgery, consider proactive scoliosis treatment to reduce and manage your curve like the conservative treatment offered at The Scoliosis Reduction Center.

Interesting. Dealing with this now. Just learned that I have a scoliosis. S-shaped, he tells me. Curve in my back and again in my neck. 57 yrs old never knew this, so must be age-related.

@@ScoliosisReductionCenter I am sure Dr Nadia has a good background but in his presentation he made errors--maybe just misspeaks....I am often suspicious because my PCP said I had no fracture because he took x-ray dept finding. And few of them have seen this degree of curse.. Advanced and safer therapy has resulted in longer better lives Using COBBS ANGLE? MY S curve was 95°/165° 10 years ago! My curve has for many years been progressive but I hope For stability. On first dx when 12 it was 35/20°. At 18 reached 55/45°. I had fusion and disk removal in 1998 and pain was gone...i read biked did sit ups. Etc etc. IT WAS WONDERFUL Then 2008 pain returned and Ortho who read x-ray said"OH MY GOD , I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR SURGEON DID". He let me see and I was devastated. The fusion of L1,L2,L3 HAD NO BAR STABILITY OR Fixation. SO CURVE WENT WILD. S curve was 90°,/150°. I had not been x rated til my falls etc began although pain was debilitating. It was 95/165 in 2011. NEUROsurgeons rarely do COBBS ANGLE. So I have no idea of current status except pain unbelievable and walking and daily activities hard I would. LOVE to chat with anyone with just dx scoliosis or long history of it! My email is in middle of this SAD STORY. LOL

I have Thoracolumbar Rotoscoliosis to my Left Convexity and DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease). Do you have any videos or information on Rotoscoliosis? There doesn't seem to be much on Google or KZfaq about this topic. I know that it is Scoliosis except with a twist of the spine. Dr said my curve is slight but the twist might be worse.
