This is the ONLY video on KZfaq that I have seen that actually makes sense. What you call a Type 2 is what everyone else is calling a Type 1. I didn't understand how they could possibly protect the house from incoming current. After watching this video I confirmed my suspicions.

I sell large appliances and, unless something has changed recently, we've been told that to not use a "type 3:"surge protector because of the current pulled by the AC motor when it starts. I had an electrical engineer explain it once with charts and graphs but I could not reproduce his explanation if my life depended on it.

I'm going to install an Intermatic AG3000 to to protect my heat pump from surges coming from further up the power chain. Will it also protect other devices in my house from a surge originating from my heat pump compressor or fan?

Never seen a protector on a meter outdoors.. wouldnt know what they look like. I know not every meter has that because ive blown a few up.. as well as seen a few lightening strikes kill damn near every light bulb in the house and meter still spinning.. what would the meter say if it had protection? Type 1 service meter or something? I always thought the ones you put by the breaker box was the first point of protection if installed.. otherwise ive never seen just a meter alone not working due to surge trip or fail. They cant be resetable if primary function is on the scale of lightening or transformer pulse surge.. in all surge protectors with mains protection and not just transient or gfci/ afci, those are resetable triggers, but mains fault or surge gates are parts that fail open circuit or may be internally resettable if not a high current fault hits it... not dogging on you, appreciate the time you took to inform others, but just wondering because would get me one of em.. too many times my unlucky arse had to file claims and do without garage doors, tv’s lost data on pc’s, blew my fridge and freezer just stocked with a whole damn cow.. you have no clue how depressing it was giving away 600 lbs of fine cut angus beef butchered a month ago feels like, especially when 90% of them dont thank ya and some even argue about what you had left like theyre entitled to better free shit.. watched some take the meat and open the freezer lock and try to smell it... anyways, those memories need not be thought about again.. is where murderers are born.. so.. sorry for that story.. but its typed out so yea.. if it pisses you off reading it, amen, your a good person... lol..

Thanks for the video. But I noticed something... That type 2 surge protector is a fire hazard (according to UL). It's been linked to house fires. Why do I know or care? I have the equivalent "Supco" brand unit attached to my A/C compressor and it caught fire at some point in the last few days. Luckily it was mounted to brick and didn't burn my house down or cause any damage other than some blackened bricks. A little research online and I found out that some other people weren't so fortunate.

Do you know if surge protection is additive? If I have surge protectors in two locations in my house, do they help to absorb surges better than one, throughout my ac wiring in the house? Thanks!

I would like to have my electric utility company install a type one surge arrestor at my house, but they are not even sure that that is something they would do. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can get the electric company to get out here and install one?

He never showed the Type 1. He only pointed to it and showed his face. That means I have no way to know whether my outdoor meter has Type 1 or not. For the Type 2, he never opened the circuit panel to explain the connection. Again, he only showed his face. Plus, we did not need the background music. I hate to give this guy a "thumbs down" because it is clear that he is a nice guy. Just inexperienced at creating KZfaq videos. At least, I did get the gist of the differences in types.

Hi. I have a 200 amp main panel and another 200 amp sub panel next to it. Do I need 2 surge protectors or just 1 in the main panel.

What decides which type 1 you should get? Are they by size or pretty much one fit all?

So he forgot to mention you have to have a good grounding system in order for the surge protector to actually draw the energy and dump it to the grounding. If you do not have a solid grounding system meaning a copper ground rod those surge protectors are just going to sit there and look very pretty and provide no protection. This guy needs to work on better educating people if he's going to recommend specific devices.
