A language should be national and spoken by most of the population. Do you know what the official language of Uganda is?
In the early 19th century, the spread of Swahili inland received great momentum from its being the language of the Arab ivory and slave caravans, which penetrated as far north as Uganda and as far west as Congo.
But what does it take for a language to be fully acknowledged as an official language of a country?

Once central rejected Swahili it will be next to impossible to popularise it. However try it in Eastern Uganda you'll be utterly shocked how it will catch like a wild fire. Actually a good percentage of them already speak Swahili.

Very true. A lot of Eastern Ugandans speak Swahili as they share a border with Kenya 🇰🇪 and do a lot of business with Kenya and we also just really like speaking Swahili 😂

The Ugandan shilling banknotes have English and Swahili on them. For example a 10,000 shilling note has "TEn THOUSAND SHILLINGS" and "SHILINGI ELFU KUMI" on it. But Swahili is not widely spoken in Uganda. You won't come far with Swahili. Luganda is probably the most spoken language, especially in Kampala and the central part, serving as a common mean of communication. Otherwise everythin is written only in English everywhere.

Thank you very much for your keen observation, Cezar. Luganda is not only "probably the most spoken language, especially in Kampala" the capital, but it is ACTUALLY the one in addition to English, the second official language of the country. In fact, Luganda has organically become the lingua franca of Uganda as a whole - the language of commerce, entertainment and now of governance; and indeed, as it was in the outlying jurisdictions which had joined the Kingdom of Buganda during the 68 years (1894-1962) of the British Administration of the country. Moreover, Luganda is "spoken" and understood, by an estimated 75% to 80% of the population of Uganda I may add. That is an estimated 37 million people out of a population of 48 million or so. No other indigenous language of Uganda has ever been as popular, which is resented by the rest of the population who are not Baganda. Hence the terms: Buganda, Baganda, Uganda and Luganda are an indication not only of the majority ethnic group of the country, by whose auspices the Uganda Protectorate (1894-1962) was formed, but also its mainstay. For example, 80% of the entire economy of Uganda is based in the Kingdom of Buganda. Therefore, it should be obvious that the use of Swahili on our "banknotes" is an imposition by the dictatorship in power, who are led by an autocrat and a despot from the minority Bahima tribe in the Kingdom of Ankole in western Uganda, who resent the dominance of the Baganda and the indigenous Luganda language. Removing Swahili from our "banknotes" as soon as the dictator of Uganda has been dismissed will not surprise me at all. Swahili, a foreign language, is not at all as popular, nor is it indigenous as Luganda. Hence, calling it an official language of the country does not make it so. One foreign official language is enough. Swahili will never be one of the official languages since it was rejected more than 100 years ago and hardly anyone speaks the language in Uganda.

This is great. I recommend you sort out the subtitles :) Also, it would have been good to clarify that Kiswahili is another term for Swahili. Thank you. I enjoy education videos like this.

Your video is biased, or you don't understand the term official, by constitution English and Kiswahili are the official languages in Uganda. That's why they are used in Government offices, Military and Schools. Luganda is just popular that doesn't mean it's official. Official and Popular are two different words.

Swahili is a spread naturally through trading and cross border activities. It will also go even to the unwilling as people intergrate for various reasons. As economies grow people need to travel, and for an African Swahili is easy to learn. One will find some very similar words to their local language. Swahili is widely spoken in Tanzania, Kenya and Eastern Congo. Business at a certain stage is more beneficial in a wide area with high population. Ugandans need not be asked whether they like Swahili or not. They will just realize that it is an important economic tool.

Let me make this issue very clear. Luganda and English are the official languages of Uganda and never Swahili, simply because both the Luganda and the English languages are the only two in Uganda which are "national and spoken by most of the population," according to your definition. Many people have been surprised to find that no one will speak to them in Swahili when they are in Kampala the capital of Uganda. In fact, Luganda has organically become the lingua franca of Uganda. Spoken by an estimated 75% to 80% of the population of Uganda, it is the language of entertainment, commerce and now steadily the language of government. English has been taught in schools and universities throughout the country for years, but so is Luganda; wisely a concession made recently by the Ministry of Education. Of course, that is resented by the non-Baganda, whose indigenous languages are not popular or widely "spoken" in the country at all. That is why the dictatorial regime entrenched in power for 37 years has sought to impose Swahili upon us by force, even though hardly anyone speaks Swahili in Uganda; the language having time and again been rejected in our country for a century! Hence, declaring that Swahili is an official language in Uganda does not make it so, nor are we willing to have yet another foreign language imposed upon us in addition to English. Swahili is not an official language of Uganda, since it is not indigenous to Uganda, cannot be and will never be, no matter what.
