well you don't mention anything about how vmotion migrates state of virtual machine across other hypervisor behind the scene at all or anything related to it.... but your topic says "How does vmotion work" . This is just an intro to Vmotion instead :)

Thanks for your comment. You are talking about DRS which utilises vMotion. This is an overview of vMotion which is a manual task, not the automated vMotion managed by DRS.

Hi nataknemt, not so sure on your response. If you want to 'migrate' a VM to another host you do need to shut it down unless you have vmKernel ports setup with vMotion. If you have vMotion enabled then yes you can migrate the VM live between hosts. Hope that helps.
