Side dressing is the addition of fertilizer on the top of the soil. I also side dress with lime. Keep it about 6 inches from the tomato stem and just sprinkle it on the ground. You can scratch it into the soil if you wish. I show you my side dressing routine.

Gary Pilarchik The reason that I am growing tomatoes is that I bought some tomatoes at a farmer's market last year. They were some type of black variety. They were the best tomatoes that I have ever eaten. I bought about 10 of them and they were all gone the next day. None of them even made it as far as a salad. They were so good. I had forgotten what a good tomato tasted like. I grew up in NJ and was use to eating good fresh produce. I planted a bunch of Black Trefele tomatoes. So far, they are doing great. BTW: Does that side dressing application intervals apply to eggplant, as well?

dakotabob10 I grew up in the Garden State. Nothing like a Jersey tomato. Unless Im growing them fresh in Maryland. I think egg plants could follow the same pattern. Peppers dont need as much. For some reason I think the produce better with a lot less nitrogen than tomatoes. I am growing a Block Trefele too. The shape look very cool.

Thanks for the tips! So using the water soluble stuff is not so good? I usually use a slow release at time of planting and give them a feeding every couple weeks with a water fertilizer. I guess the fertilizer works even on top of the mulch?

Hi Gary, So I just added bout half cup of "lime/water " to my tomatoes , peppers & zucchini plants I planted a lil early 2 week May here in Western Maryland ..and there looking good ( besides the fact I planted early the birds picked my plants to pieces but didn't kill them, I planted same time they were building nests)!!! my question is I am assuming that the lime slurry is good for the entire garden but I wanted to ask you?? and do I want to add more lime on down the line maybe when multiple bloom starts???

This is my first year trying to grow organically. I put down Miracle grow garden soil, then planted peas, cucumbers along my fence line. I planted tomatoes of all shapes and sizes. My garden grows well most years. Now that I'm growing organically I am learning a lot from kim and you I heard to use crushed eggshells and Epsom salts? Can I use that instead of lime?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Lime and gypsum are still organic. You can use eggshells. They take time to breakdown so just keep them rolling regularly in the garden or in your compost heap. Good luck!

Hey Gary, I just have a question, I had a cucumber growing but it disappeared I thought that an animal ate it but the hole cucumber is gone as if someone harvested it and the same thing happened with one of my jalapeño that was on the bottom of the plant, the top ones are still there but the one in the bottom disappeared. I was wondering if you can help me protect my plants or maybe buy a spray that keeps animals away of my plants... Thank you!

lime is alkaline so will raise the ph of the soil. tomatoes do best in a ph of 6.2 to 6.8 range or so i am told so if your soil is neutral or a bit alkaline then adding lime may be counter productive. i checked my soil a couple years ago and it was right around 7. my tomatoes do well here but i would not want to raise that number any higher so do not add lime. last year i tried jobe's tomato and vegetable fertilizer with biozome and the plants loved it so i will be using it again. i had some tomatoes over 20 ounces and an early girl of 10 ounces so you can see they really loved the jobe's. my bell peppers loved it too and produced many large beautiful peppers. for anyone who is looking for an organic fertilizer they might want to consider the jobe's i used.

Sorry for digging up an old video but still working my way through. I have a question - for sunken containers do you side dress 2/3 times a year and still feed the water fertilizer every week to 10 days? Or is it just plain water through the season with just side dressing for feed? I'm worried I may be overfeeding. Thanks again for all the videos, hope you are doing a tour soon, really interested in seeing this years peppers.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 7 жыл бұрын
Well depends. If you really set up the planting mix you can do 1 side dress and water feed every 10-14 days. But I cant give you specific answer because the fertilizers vary too much. I would recommend less if you are concerned. That is best practice.

What state are you in? I am in Colorado and our soil is alkaline and has clay so we need to add sulfur or it ties up iron and calcium (CSU). So it is not recommended to use lime or gypsum in soil. In soiless containers with peat moss then we need it.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
You dont need the MG 1x a week. It keeps them green but they focus more on leaves. I would stop it and actually do every 2 weeks if you like using it early on. Just let the plant grow now. Good luck. I remember that you said in your liquid fertilizer video to liquid fert feed tomatoes (and peppers, herbs and flowers too, I presume?) full strength every 2 weeks or 1/2 strength every week with your liquid fert recipe which I have been using. When I side dress should I skip the liquid fertilizer feeding? Will I harm my tomatoes if I do them in the same week? I had to pot up my tomatoes into much larger containers this week (bad planning on my part). Should I side dress fertilize them now or wait? I don't want to hurt them with too much "love". Thanks!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 10 жыл бұрын
I think you are doing great and you can do either. The reason being there is no exact way. And either way your a maintaining a regularly supply of nutrients. Ground tomatoes have a lot more resources than containers. Container tomatoes need regular feeding with liquid fert. They cant really handle missing too much. You can skip it with ground plants. Some people might only feed them 1x monthly with liquid for the ground tomatoes. IF you repotted and put fert in there. I would skip the side dressing. If not some on top will be fine.

Any tips for overfertilized tomato plants in containers? I am new to gardening so up until about a few weeks ago, thought I had to feed it weekly, and so I did. Recently I noticed that some of the leaves are wilting though the fruits that are setting are coming nicely. Out of fear that the wilting was due to disease, I started hacking off some of the wilted leaves, but now I think I cut to much and the tomatos will be exposed to the sun as they mature...which I also hear is a bad thing. I used ecoscraps plant food 5-4-6 and then later switched to tomatotone 3-4-6, but because I thought "food was food" I didn't really consider the numbers. Have I caused irreversible damage to the poor little sucker?? And can I do something to limit the direct sun exposure to the fruits?

John McCarthy A couple of mine did. Sometimes the flowers get messed up with rain, heat or environmental stuff. Is it the same variety of tomato that is doing it or are all of them. Cat facing usually is nutrient related I dont think. Do you think the are getting enough with the compost tea or is the rain leeching it out?

I add a couple of inches of mulch around my tomatoes so do I need to move it out of the way to side dress or can I put it on top of the mulch and do u still use water soluble fertilizers every 7 to 10 days if u side dress? Thanks. I remember u did a video on a fast acting organic non soluble fertilizer but I can't find it. Was it the Epsoma tomato tone of the Epsoma vegetable and tomato one?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 7 жыл бұрын
Right on the mulch and it will work its way down with watering and rain. The side dress is slower release. Read the organic granular ingredients,. It will say insoluble form and soluble. But I would still water it with soluble like every 10-14 days. You should be cutting nitrogen way back at this time too.

Ok, concerned. My plants do not look like yours. They are heirlooms and I planted them based on the SFG method. Now I am wondering if this was not a good idea. Mine are no where near 7 ft yet have lots of fruit. Plant height is maybe a little over 5 ft. Also, plants do not have as many leaves. Do you think plantS require more nutrients due to close spacing? Also you suggested a 10-10-10 side dressing. I have seabird guano that is I 12-13-12(I'm guessing). Is this ok to side dress even though numbers are higher? Thanks so much for all the videos. Were you or are you a teacher/professor? If not, you would have been a good one. You explain things so well and you have a voice that draws attention. Have a great day. Thanks again.

cocobrwngl I think 5 feet is fine. Tomatoes can grow a ton in one week if the conditions are right. If you have flowers and fruit. They will need more space to get to a good size I think but I really would say you will have tons of tomatoes. I wouldnt worry. I think you do need more fert for plants that are closer together. I now tomatoes suck the life out of soil. As for 12-13-12 that is fine. I normally dont like saying numbers because it causes undo worry. As long as you have a feeding routine and watering routine plants do pretty well. For instance say i used a 2-2-2 fertilizer but add more then you might with 12-13-12.. I could in theory add as much nitrogen as yours to my garden. No teaching history.

Hmmm....do i have to water after the side dressing? If i don't will the fertilizer burn the plant? I abstain this morning from watering because I was planning to side dress today because I'm thinking watering is required after side dressing. Also, it's 2 week soluble fertilizing is due. In addition, it's also time to add some epsom salt. Would it be too much to side dress AND water with liquid soluble fertilizer at the same time? Should i dissolve the epsom salt into the liquid fertilizer or sprinkle it with the side dress? What do i do? The plants are at a stage whereby the tomatoes are just appearing. This will be it's 1st side dress other than the initial transplant. Btw, these 3 tomatoes plants are in 5 gal. containers & they are doing great. I also have 5 plants in a raise bed transplanted only a week later (no fruits yet, but there are flower buds), but the container plants are so much bigger. Thanks!

I would water it in well. Organic wont burn it but a good watering gets everything going. Nope you can do it all together. As the side dressing will break down slowly over time.
