An explanation of several philosophical definitions of Wisdom. Including: Humility, Accuracy, and Living Well. We will also examine the questions of whether or not we can have wisdom under these definitions and explore some objections to each of them (and the skeptic's opinions of each of these definitions).

wisdom is internal . knowledge is external ... wisdom will seek knowledge and information to better understand things . wisdom will also seek wisdom.... you already have to be wise to except wisdom , knowledge is just information . wisdom is a combination , of knowledge intuition and emotional intelligence morals how to live life. passion purpose , morals . .

Perhaps we could define wisdom by its opposite... stupidity? Bonhoeffer defined the stupid as those who harm themselves and everyone around them... without malice. Therefore he would define the wise as those who make their own lives better as well as that of everyone else... without self sacrifice.

My thoughts: 1. Wisdom is simply just living life. (We are what we are, despite our disposition in life.) 2. Wisdom is admitting what you don't know. (Humility? Honesty to self?) 3. Letting Go? 4. Omega (Whatever you want it to be. Definition will always be different to different people, since all of us have our own subjective lens... No wrong answer.)

A wise person is someone that is capable of asking the right question when everybody else is concerned to answer the wrong question. Its not about how much you know, but using what you know to find a knew path around an obstacle know one seems capable of passing through. This encompases humlity, because its not about knowing the answers, but asking the right question. It encompases accuracy, because the question you are asking has to lead to the heart of the matter. It encompasses Living well, because answers to the wrong questions doesn't bring any satisfaction. For you to live well, you need to find the right direction, or else you walk aimless like a drunk.

I think it's important to note that each and everyone one of us possesses knowledge about the world that others don't know, regardless on whether they are an adult or a young person. With that said, we can say who the wise person is and what wisdom is really depends on the context and circumstance. Like for instance if an undergrad student seeks advice in pursuing further studies, it would make sense that they would refer to people who have experience in it. Likewise, if an adult is in a dire situation they can perhaps go to children so that they will be reminded on what really matters in life.

Every definition I can think of for wisdom can boil down to good decision-making. To me, wisdom is always associated with good decisions or advice. To characterize it with the OCEAN traits, I’d say it’s high openness, high conscientiousness, and low neuroticism. IQ measures a certain type of intelligence. But I think wisdom is a different kind of intelligence, a social intelligence. I think being wise is having what I would call a high level of “soft” intelligence while wisdom itself is a “soft knowledge.” Those are just my thoughts.

***** Well, I've read that, and you're sort of right that I don't have a lot of use for philosophy. If you can't identify why there's a problem, then I'd think probably there really isn't one. As I said, I read about Hume on the matter. I don't see that there is any is-ought problem.

***** I know enough to know that plenty of philosophers are with me on the question. Hume's problem comes of religious influences that suggested a _prescriptive_ "ought." In other words, some kind of objective morality. We can dismiss such thinking, and recognize that "oughts" _do_ derive from what _is_ much of the time, either probablistically or conditionally.

The answer to the question that is always asked more during the course of human life, what is the intellect in principle, in my opinion, the intellect and the soul are a single phenomenon in the existence of an object that causes intelligent physical movement in the body since single cell time. And according to the nature of intellect and soul, as well as the phenomenon of thought, which after birth, develops through the five senses, all these three principles belong to the world outside the body, and after the expiration of the life of the body, which is no longer possible. The needs related to the intellect and the soul are not provided by the body, they cause the intellect and the soul and thought to leave the body as a whole.

Wisdom just means knowledge but a fancier word than knowledge. See that'd knowledge. If you know that knowledge is power then you know that power is knowledge. See that is knowledge and very clever. If you know that knowledge is another word clever you know that wisdom means knowledge. That is so much knowledge of the same thing

Interesting claim. The counterargument would be that "knowledge" and "wisdom" seem to be used in different contexts. It seems that someone may know a great deal of facts but not be wise because of perhaps a lack of practical knowledge or ability. You might use them interchangably, but many people don't.

The idea of wisdom may be a holdover from an early point in intellectual history, a time when various ideas that have since come apart were once unified. The various modern views may be unsatisfying because they fail to reconstruct the rich concept it once was. Beauty and truth, for example, were once widely thought to be intimately connected. But no longer. The human person and the cosmos (expressed in the idea of macrocosm and microcosm) where thought to have strong parallels--that is, the cosmos wasn't just thought to be mechanically ordered, but a living thing with a soul and which operated according to a moral order. But we no longer think man and cosmos are alike in this way. Moral virtue and success were often thought to go together, if not in this life then in the next. But today we don't really expect this settling of accounts. These beliefs (all dependent on old worldviews I don't think we could ever return to) allow for the overlapping and blurring of various good things like knowledge, virtue, beauty, prosperity etc. into a unified whole rather than today's collection of independent and sometimes competing concepts. Success at discovering and conforming to this harmonious coincidence of goods would be wisdom. But it's plausible to think we've discovered all this stuff isn't the case, so... I don't know, maybe the skeptical view of wisdom will do. Perhaps we can do without the concept altogether.

Quite possibly. Just because we have a concept, does not mean that there is some perfect definition of it out there.

Living well would be subjectively defined wouldn't it? Isn't the only person's opinion that would matter on living well be the person in question?
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene 8 жыл бұрын
Some philosophers think that it needs to be defined objectively. For example that while a heroin addict might think that while they are high, that they are living well, we would not objectively say that they are living well.
@menotyou135
@menotyou135 8 жыл бұрын
Well, in that case, the addict would reach moments of distress if they actually weren't living well. If these instances never occurred, how could we even begin to argue that they aren't living well? They aren't really living well because of the negative effects and they wouldn't be able to honestly believe they are living well outside of those few moments of being high. They might be able to say "Some moments of my life I live well." If these negative effects of being high never presented themselves, then how could you or I say the addict isn't living well?

Wise to me means when you can GET the answers to the unanswered questions , and then the answer is no longer questionable this will bring you closer to truth instead of just someone's opinion, but if there is no answer to the question it then becomes a controversial subject, the only way to settle that is a majority vote, and admit that we do not know the answer. This is my way of searching for truth.
