What Is Your Identity as a Dog Owner? #23

Dogs That

Күн бұрын

Things have been a little weird around here because six days ago we welcomed a litter of four puppies. One of these puppies will be my next dog, and it got me thinking about how I identify myself and how that relates to my dogs. And it is the same for you. Your identity matters for you and your dog.
In the episode you'll hear:
• The importance of how you identify yourself.
• Why our dog is always getting trained either through conscious effort or our dog’s
experimentation.
• When to transition from a newbie identity, but how being an expert can hurt you.
• Why accolades and accomplishments are events rather than identifiers.
• How I identify myself.
• About going from information gathering to taking action.
• Why I’m excited about my new puppy and for any new mistakes I might make.
• Things your dog does not care about if you get training wrong.
• What creates forward momentum.

The real joy for her comes from bringing confidence to dogs and their owner through playful interactions and relationship building games that are grounded firmly in the science of how animals learn.

I wish I had ppl i could have these conversations with. I don't feel I have anyone that would be so excited to talk about these topics as I am while listening to it, because it's been going back and forth in my head for quite a while and oh boy, do i want to share this podcast I lost contact with a dog trainer that taught me a bit my puppy when he was a baby, she wouldn't go as deep and was more rispid in her words, but essentially she'd say the same it's being said and now that I'm training by myself, I see I'm in this situation and this topic is making so much sense to me The funniest thing about it, is that what is said in this podcast isn't something only about dogs. It's just another of the aspects in life that this very intricacy manifests

I'm rewatching this and holy cow.... Is this foreshadowing!?! This! is Awesome in her own way, and didn't she make Susan learn and grow in ways she wasn't expecting! She might have had to re-look and her own identity as a dog owner and teacher. ❤

Well, you are talking to me in this one. I tend to dive into listening and learning and don't take the action needed, and then I get myself overwhelmed. Thank you for this reminder.

So true, I used to be a gatherer, then got so distracted I didn’t know where to go or what to do first. Thinking dog training had to be done instantly. I now take on little tasks, enjoy the journey and see how far I can go. Often I fail, but then sometimes I get a great ah ha moment of understanding and we move forward. The most important thing to me as a dog owner is the bond I share him. I am listening to your podcasts, I prefer watching on you tube. I’m loving Recallers and the games, and training my dog is a joy.

I watch them while she is napping…I joined Recallers a few weeks ago and haven’t started yet and you nailed it in this podcast…wish I would have come across this one long ago as I have watched probably 100 podcasts to date….I watched connected dog series …I have no excuses…don’t get me wrong I do work with her daily…but haven’t started Recallers because thought I needed more foundation 🙃 so thank you for the kick I needed to get started…I am exactly as you describe curious, lifelong learner etc….need more ACTION and I’m on it…thank you for sharing😊kim

So great! "How do I train my dog?" Go out and work with your dog. I like watching these videos to see little details like how reward position changes the accuracy of the dog doing a desired move. And to find games that are fun for my low drive dog.

I love listening to your podcasts. Never am I bored or distracted. I'm engaged in what you're saying and I'm taking notes so I can take action. I have 4 dogs and I divide up my time between the 4. Although I have one who is on her own planet, the other 3 are very eager to participate in a quick training session or game. Thanks again for the info.

I can relate to this podcast. Being a perfectionist that does get me in to trouble at times, I do have the mentality that if Handling 360 and Agility Nacion give us the tools and understanding , then why look futher. For that reason I do not participate in seminars because it only gets you more tangled up. SUSAN again hit the nail on the head😉

Wow, It is the Christmas holiday so I am re-watching these podcasts. This episode hit me so hard! I joined recallers at the end of November. I am always listening and reading. I was so overwhelmed trying to learn everything before I started I just could not get past a couple games. This podcast has challenged me to stop procrastinating!!! In order to use the knowledge, I must get up and DO something. Otherwise, I have wasted time and money and not helped my dog or myself. Thank you for this great advice. It is sort of a kick in the seat of the pants. Ha, So I am going right now to start the recallers games. Bye

If I have created behaviors from old ways of thinking and teaching , how do I navigate the in between and or transition? I am much more a hearing , watching, doing person, so I am very grateful for your podcast! so many ahh haaaas!

Gems: if you are a dog owner, you are a dog trainer :) Remember you are a humble, curious, lifelong learner, and action taker. You can learn something from every single person you meet. Checklist: take a little in, assimilate it in your brain, rehearse it on a piece of paper, play with your dog. Training a dog is a great opportunity to learn through experience. Perfectionism is just another form of procrastination. Procrastination is a form of self protection. Identify yourself in a way that creates momentum for you to move forward with your dog. Most importantly: DO SOMETHING TODAY THAT IS GOING TO BRING YOU ONE STEP CLOSER TO HAVING A WELL TRAINED DOG. I think it's time for me to commit to #40in40. I just want to build my calendar to mark them off and have it posted on my wall.

Can't remember what episode it was, but you helped change the barking cattle dogs in the same x-pen to quiet ones when people or dogs walked by. I know you specifically asked the owners if they would fight each other for the treats, but What if the dogs did fight with treats on the ground? How would you have changed it, especially with 6 of them? What about dogs going after each other because of frustration of not getting to what's outside the fence - treats not even around? I still want to leave my dogs out at the same time. Please advise on both.

My Husky/Aussie keeps training ME. Yeah. Big baby doesn't want to eat out in the kitchen so she cries from the living room. In comes the big sucker with her dish, next thing she's eating on the couch with me holding her dish. I like to think I'm still the Alpha.
