The thing with English in China is , that China modernized and opened up at such a rapid speed , that people have a hard time catching up . All this happened in the last 2 decades. Imagine trying to learn English in a non English speaking country when you are in your forties. If you meet someone 50 or older speaking English in China , got to respect him .

@@Ahoooooooo i mean, Chinese (including all different dialects like Cantonese) is very different from English or any European languages. You can’t expect an average person, including college students, can understand and speak English well, even though English is a mandatory course throughout their academic years. And this has nothing to do with the speed of a country’s development. An average person in Japan, Korea or even France would be pretty much the same as in China. although Also, although written English is everywhere in the city, pretty much nobody would pay attention to them, unless it’s someone who’s motivated to learn English. Lastly, the Chinese educational system is still exam-oriented and oral English is still not a mandatory part of the college entrance exam (which is EXTREMELY important and valued), Chinese students tend to have way better reading and writing English skills than listening and oral skills. Also recently, English itself is valued less in the college entrance exam; students can freely choose one foreign language to be tested on, including English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Russian, German etc.(not sure about the whole list), although the majority would still choose English as not every school offers courses for the other foreign languages and English was the only option for so long. (Fun fact, Russian was mandatory in the 50s and 60s, not English)

I am from US, if I just listen without looking at her, as far as accent goes, I can tell from her English that she is from Africa , but her Mandarin is hard to tell that she is a foreigner, because not every Chinese speaks with perfect Mandarin, so she could be a Chinese minority. She impresses me with her pronunciation when it comes to speaking Chinese.

@@designqq8905 she is from Yoruba and her language is a Tonal language as well... And she said in other videos she's learning Chinese from the same university that she is in.. And she is only learning it about 3 years now
