This Independence Day, as we gather around the grill and watch fireworks with our friends and families, we wanted to revisit a conversation Audie had with Baratunde Thurston, writer at Puck News and host of the PBS show America Outdoors.
What does it mean to love this country despite its divisions? How can we come together and hold space for the complexity of the American story? And what would those conversations sound like if we did?

Patriotism means protecting one's living space... from both the internal enemy and the external enemy. However, patriotism does not mean expansion. Patriotism does not mean threatening the living space of others.

Being a PATRIOT is SIMPLE. It Doesn't involve NOT criticizing the 🇺🇲, it DOESN'T mean erasing, avoiding, altering as to make, " less shameful, " or minimizing 🇺🇲 history, present or future in school's or conversation. Being a PATRIOT is INDISPUTABLY DEFINED BY ONE STATEMENT! VERY SIMPLY ADHERING TO, SUPPORTING, PROTECTING and DEFENDING the 🇺🇸📜. No MORE, no LESS! We'd be in a MUCH better place if THAT was adopted by those who CLAIM all kinds of things as, " patriotic. "
