My husband is a runner and says no runners he knows would think anything bad because everyone has been a beginner sometime. In my experience runners are an awesome community of people who all encourage each other. My husband is an ultra runner and I've seen all encouragement and cheers for the new runners of all sizes. Good for you keeping it real and being vulnerable on here! Thanks

I agree! Especially RunDisney runners, I always feel so much encouragement bc everyone has been a first-timer once. Definitely do it again next year, especially now that you know the ins and outs of coral lineups, etc.

Absolutely! Almost all dedicated runners LOVE it, and are excited that others are beginning that same journey. Not only are they not thinking bad things about the beginners, even if they don't have encouraging words, they are probably having encouraging thoughts for you. Everybody, no matter how experienced they are at something now were a beginner once too.

I just signed up for a virtual Disney Run race. I would really like to do an in person one someday. I am going to be walking on my own. I am almost 50, and trying to get back into good shape. Many of us struggle. Thanks for all the good info!

Number one. Thank you for being vulnerable and showing all of this to us. It takes a lot of courage to face this head on and share. I’m so proud of you for getting out there and attempting this, and for going through and editing this all together. Being swept is not a point of shame. It’s a “not right now”. Those nerves never go away. Even if it’s a distance you’ve faced before. That bib pickup looks way more crazy than 2022. I can tell you no runner will think that way about you. The RunDisney community of runners want everyone to finish. KT tape is my best friend on a race. Think of it like a bit of an exoskeleton. Go do that 10K virtually at home and earn that medal. I know that you can do the miles on your own time. If you go do revenge next year, vlog your training! I’m going to be attempting the Marathon and am hoping to vlog my training to keep myself on it. And I’ll see you there!

Great idea, train and do the 10k this year on your own timetable. I’ve done 9 full marathons and the nerves are always present. The most important thing is you took the first steps and started. Thanks for staying positive in the end. You got this.

I walked the 5K at Castaway, using my cane. (I am 75.) Met many people giving encouraging cheers. Only made it to the Tower, (half a 5K). Cast members at the end gave me an honorary Medal which I treasure since I could never do 5K. Start with the Castaway 5K and you will be able to run, or walk it. Good luck. Linda (&Carl)

I’m 5’3” and at one time 265lbs. I started running short marathons and eventually after dropping 100lbs after a few years of running, ran a few ultra marathons (100miles). Just keep signing up with a mindset of damn it I’m gonna finish this time. And once you get one finish under your belt, you’ll get addicted.

Sorry you got swept. Happened to me at 2021 wine and dine 10k. I know every emotion and thought you went through. I have since kept training and have now finished 3 disney 10ks since then. So absolutely keep going. Definitely try and work some hill work in your training if you can. I run around the boardwalk area to train for the elevation changes these races have.

Being a70 year runner who just completed the Houston Half Marathon on Sunday(1/15/23) and having been running for 43 plus years, I have a couple comments on your video. I admire you for putting your self on video on your journey. Most runners don't judge other people for size or speed, we are glad to see you trying. If there are runners that judge you, they are jerks. This goes for people at the gym. Hills are tough especially if you are use to running without hills. You never mentioned what training you did for the 10K. Since you have almost a year before the 10k, I would recommend set up a training program to your level of fitness and you should be able to easily finished the 10k. Good luck.

As a big guy myself who started walking and then running and adding in strength training I am so impressed by you and glad I watched your video. I have run 10 Disney races ranging from dopey to 5Ks with my kids. Start with the motivation that you have found today and build from there. Look at Galloway training as a way to help you judge training and time. Again congratulations to you for having the confidence to post this the confidence to even sign up for the race in the first time and for finding motivation to work towards whatever is next.

Thank you for creating content for large people. Your information is extremely helpful for people who are of larger size. I was once over 300 lbs. I lived many years being very unhealthy and expereinced the same issues you had mentioned growing up. You are extremely brave for trying a 10k. I have signed up for mostly 5ks and one 10k. I wound up injured from the 5k and could not participate in the 10k. Don't get discouraged. You will for sure complete your next 10k. You are an inspiration to all of us. You have no idea the gift you are giving by making a video describing what it is like to be swept. I am going to make note of this and will be ready to share your video in the future because in all the RunDisney groups I am in there is a lot of panic about being swept. Sharing your video and experience will make people feel so much better. I did Dopey and hoped I would meet you at the 10k. Hope to meet you next year!

Keep trying! I love doing RunDisney events, and always have a fear of getting swept. I used to run the kids races, then moved up to the 5Ks, then the 10Ks, and now I am doing the Toy Story 10 Miler in April. Never stop believing in yourself, you deserve the medal. Don’t be ashamed of it, you earned it. You tried your best, and sometimes you don’t always win, but I am here to support you in every way possible. I used to be a runner and the running community has always been supportive no matter if you are just starting out or been running for years. I remember hating my first 5k run and a few years later I ended up finishing my first half marathon at Disneyland and loving it. Just starting a 10k with the intent of finishing it is a big step. Just keep on training by doing those 5ks and you will be finishing a 10k in no time!

Thank you so much for doing the run! I think you came out of the race with the right attitude. You can fail 100 times, but if on the 101st time you succeed, then it's a success. It's a not a bad thing to run and not finish. It's a bad thing to never run in the first place. So, you are not a failure for trying and being vulnerable to failure. You only fail if you never try. You tried. And your concerns about running at an incline are 100% legitimate concerns. I can tell you that there were a good number of races the inclines got me. Come back to it next year. Just try to get that 4th mile down and you'll be very likely to finish! Train every other day if you have to. I have been a runner my whole life and I have done up to half marathons. You are absolutely in the right mindset. Just never give up. Those thoughts that are telling you to give up is your anxiety. It's not what your body or mind truly wants. I commend you for trying something new and try again next year. Don't even think about your weight. The runners aren't thinking about that. They are likely happy you are helping others learn to train for a race over 300 lbs. You're going to lose weight running in the long run, and even if you don't, it's making your heart healthier. No matter what, the actions you are taking by running is helping you live healthier. I implore you not to quit. A 10k is difficult regardless of what you weigh. Even getting halfway is doing more than most. Get a really awesome pair of headphones, nice shoes, and tunes, comfortably fitting clothes, and train every other day. Start with the 5k and then train towards the 10k. So, one day get to the 4th mile and that's it. One day get to the 5th mile, then that's it. One day get to the 6th mile and you're there. It is advisable to overtrain to undertrain. Don't hurt yourself by training too much, but try to set your goals past the 10k mark if possible. I wanted to comment to tell you not to quit. Even running/walking a mile takes effort to people who don't regularly do it. You are trying 6 of those my friend. Don't be so hard on yourself.

As someone who used to run a lot of races, I just want to tell you that at any given race you'll see all kinds of people with all different kinds of body sizes and shapes. If I've learned anything it's that you never know how anyone is going to perform & the most important thing is that you're doing it. Doesn't matter your size or ability, doesn't matter if you finish in 30 minutes or 3 hours or if you get swept: you're doing it & not giving up & that's something that others will always respect. So here's to next year & getting that 10K!

You should be proud of yourself for even starting the race, lots of people are not even doing that much. Back in 2018 my husband and I finished our first Dopey. Then I heard about the Castaway Cay challenge and wanted to add that to a Dopey the following year. In 2019 we got swept at mile 23 ugh! Fast forward to this year .. our 4th attempt at finishing a Dopey .. and we did it and Castaway Cay too!! My point in telling you this story is to encourage you to try again .. and again if necessary- don’t give up! By the way we are walkers, not runners, and in our 60s too. This year we started in corral F just 1.5 minutes before the balloon ladies. It was a really hard race for us, but we had put in lots of training time and were determined to finish. So, put in lots of training time and you too will succeed in your next 10K.

I ran disney just before the pandemic it was tough every race was hot they even cut 5 miles off the marathon for some of the back runners. The running community is vast and incredibly supportive we all started somewhere we have all had our issues in training and races so we can all emphasis with you. I was swept up in 2012 paris marathon and vowed never again! So far i jave finished the next 18 marathons including run disney dopey chsllenge. Hey my Disney friend, that almost happened to me on my first Disney 10K in 2020. I was the group right before the balloon ladies and spent the entire race trying to keep up with them. I didn't get swept, but I did get warned. I did learn some tricks...Get there early and get in that corral. Don't stand on the right-hand side of the corral as that is a pinch point when you do that tight U-turn going into the shoot. I got caught there in 2020 and ended up at the back. I was at the 10K with you this year....All the comments that you made at the end are true. If you had been in C, you would have been fine. You don't realize in the car how much of a hill those overpasses are. They winded me as well. Kudos to you for getting out there. I hope you will try again. Much pixie dust to you!

I started at the last corral and made myself go up to the very beginning (got there around 2:45-3:00ish). I walked (because my knee gave up on me right from the beginning) and the balloon ladies caught up with me at mile 5.5ish inside EPCOT. I kept moving and was able to finish but I know some people got swept behind me inside the park so there’s no more “safe” zone. You did your best. I just watched this video. You thumbnail is what caught my eye. I just want to thank you for your honest feelings. I am 60+ & always been overweight. I am walking and I did do the Castaway Cay in 2019, but I walked most of it. When I saw these races I really thought and wished about them, because they are DISNEY ❤. Then I heard about the balloon ladies and that scares me. Thank you for your feelings you shared. I don't live by DW, so maybe I will never do the 3k, but you comments makes me feel better if I did give it a try. I'm sending you all the best wishes for 2023 victory.

Proud of you for trying! I would’ve advised you to get to the start line much earlier & get as close as possible to the front of your corral. Doing run/walk intervals in the beginning & you’ll have the stamina to push at the end. Use your arms to get you up the hills. I got injured in a restaurant 2 nights before the 2022 Marathon & only made it 8.7 miles. I made an “I Tried” shadow box & put my bib & medal in it. Do the Galloway training & try again! I hope to see you on the course next year! You can do it!!! Also, I conquered the 2023 Marathon last Sunday!!! Felt so good!

You did do what you could do and at least you tried. Don’t give up on this journey, work towards a time that ten k should be done in so that you can say you did it your way. Runners are a different breed. You can always train to be the best you can be.

Don’t give up! Keep trying. It’s your first time so it’s going to be 2x challenging than a 5K. Do some training runs to build up your endurance before your race. I don’t know off the top of my head the one mile pace(it’s 16min/mile) is but work to build and maintain it! I haven’t run a WDW RunDisney race but I have run a 10K and Half at Disneyland. Good luck! You can do it!!

Serious kudos to you for putting yourself out there and being vulnerable with this. I am doing the Princess 5k next month (my very fist 5k) and even though I know I won't get swept in the 5k, my anxiety about it as an overweight person has made me think of just not going at all at times. I think you should be extremely proud of yourself for even attempting it because a lot of people don't. All we can do in life is do our best and keep trying 💜

Very proud of you! You should definitely try again. I didn't hear you say if you trained for the 10K. I recommend using Jeff Galloway's 10K training plan. Also, if they offer pace groups, join the 16mm pace group. I look forward to more of your videos in the future!

This is the only vid I have seen with the sweep bus. Good job putting it up. My best advice is to drop your weight because that WILL increase both your endurance and your pace significantly. (Very easy to say but very hard to do. I know). Once you have done that those bridges will become much less noticeable. (Just think of what it would be like deadlifting your weight to the height of the bridge! This is essentially what you are having to do). I started out struggling to run a mile, and now I am unhappy if I don't make Coral A for the marathon (I'm 58 and a half) The hardest parts of running are 1. Starting the training, and 2. Keeping up the training. Race day is easy when the training is good. Best of luck in your next 10k.

None of the experienced runners are judging you for being a beginner or your size. We all had to start somewhere. I hope you stick with running and come back to try again with a little more experience. I’ll also say the runDisney crowd is the most friendly running crowd you will find. Stay positive! If you make an attempt at running it again complete a couch to 10k program. Your setting yourself up for failure if you skip that. I have a heart transplant and I have run many races including the Dopey Challenge and I wouldn’t try a race without training for it. I will also tell you that training becomes more important as you look at the longer distances. Lol the marathon will screw you up if you skip the training, look at the walking zombies at the 5:30 finish times for any marathon.

Thank you for making this video. I won’t lie, I shed a few tears for you but am so happy to hear that you’re motivated to give it another go. I started my Disney race journey about 7 years ago and know the stress of the Balloon Ladies is real. They passed me in my first two Disney half marathons but I was fortunate to stay close enough behind that I was able to finish. I’ve gone on to finish just about every Disney race series at this point but will never forget those early days. Just as you mention, there are always lessons and takeaways and I have no doubt you’ll wear that medal with pride next year. If you want someone to hang with you during the race and keep you pushing, feel free to reach out.

Great attempt. It wasn’t the length of the race as much as the pace that was set that did you in. I am a heavy guy too, and you give me faith that someday I too will be as brave as you and try the run myself. You inspire me.

Failure is not trying and letting your fears dictate to you what you will or will not do. Let this be an experience to motivate and try again. Risking something is the ultimate definition of sucess, not the end outcome.

Running is such a great community. I will never criticize another runner, because I’m never running against someone else, it’s always me vs me. Just keep going. Can’t wait to see more updates from you in the future.

I’m really proud of you for trying! I’m plus size my self trying to break into 10ks after doing a few 5ks so I’m always happy to see the stories of others. It’s always nice to hear what happens in the possibility of the worse happening so I truly thank you for telling us about this. Hoping to do Princess Challenge 2025 so I’m slowly training my self. Keep it up, you got this for next year!

Thank you for sharing. Do your run virtually and “earn” your medal and wear it proud. Come back and try again. Every time you run one you’ll learn, just like you said you’d get their earlier so you could get up to the front of the corral. I don’t know you, but I’m proud of you and I know you can do it.

hey man, your end of this video was exactly correct. you tried and that does mean something. just remember when it comes to races: 1st Place > Top 3 > Finished the Race > Did Not Finish the Race > Did Not Attempt the Race. As long as you are not in that last category of (did not attempt) then you did better than billions of other people.

I did my first 5k on thanksgiving 2022. It was awesome! I thought for sure the experienced runners would look at me & my sister as the newbies who had no idea why they’re doing. & it wasn’t like that at all! Everyone is so supportive and so encouraging! Made me want to do more! I’m doing another one this month & hoping to prep this year for the Rundisney 1/2 marathon at Disneyland in 2024!!

I understand not wanting the medal, but don’t give up on it- hang onto it and use it as extra motivation. If you don’t feel like you earned it, then next time when you do complete your 10K (and you will!!) earn it then. I signed up for a virtual Star Wars race with in 2021 and because of an injury wasn’t able to “earn it” until I completed my race this past weekend. It was a great feeling to finish anyhow, but was extra special knowing that I had “earned” the Star Wars medal too.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I think it helped people more than you know. I am so happy you have decided to try again. Start training now and start checking off those milestones on your own. Then sign up for a race soon. Local races are the best. No time limits and usually alot of fun. Disney is not a typical race. The time crunch is hard for anyone to tackle. If you had run any other 10k you would have finished. Please know that. Stay consistent with getting miles in and by the time you get there again next year you will have plenty of 5k’s and 10k’s under your belt. Stay positive!

I would never try this. I don’t even try and because of this I will never experience the rush of the run. You felt defeated but I think this is a learning experience you needed so you could do better next year. Why do we watch your cruise ship videos? To learn how to get around the boat and island. So maybe your video will push me to try to run. To try to step out of my comfort zone and feel the rush of the run. You’ve got this, I believe in you.
