Biggest thing for me after passing and moving to a 650. Wasn’t speed etc. it was being able go up steep hills without having to go down into 2nd and actually accelerating up them 😊

I ride a 125 to commute to London and planning to do DAS early next year. Finding your videos very informative, and now also inspiring. I have had my eyes on the Z400 for almost a year now!

Nice video and good advice. In days of yore, I passed my test on a Honda CD175. Afterwards, I changed to a Triumph 3TA, which wasn't much more powerful but had much higher torque and at lower revs. Apart from the feeling that the Triumph was much taller, the main thing I felt was how much easier it was to handle the Triumph in traffic plus it was much less influenced by road surface defects. The smaller bike teaches you to be positive in your actions, especially with throttle and clutch, the bigger bike teaches you how and when to be more subtle.

i remember back when i was 16 moving from my 110cc scooter to a 250 2-stroke Suzuki RGV...it was insane!!i felt like it could accelerate to mach 2 in seconds!you do get used to it...same happened when i first took for a spin a liter bike...you just have to respect the power those bikes have and be smooth and take it slow...
@ayserides
@ayserides 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. You do get used to it but have to take it easy until you do!

The thing I noticed mostly when going from a 125 to my first A bike (Ninja 650) was how much better the suspension was and how much more stable the bigger bike is around corners. There's loads you can practice on a 125 that will help you with a bigger bike, though. Smoothness, observation, forward planning, slow riding control, appropriate gear selection, etc. In a way, smaller displacement bikes are really unforgiving of bad cornering as you have to carry better speed and gear as you can't compensate for it at the exit with a fistful of torque...
@ayserides
@ayserides 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, 125s really teach you how to use your gears. Can't lug it around in 4th relying on torque to carry you through

I could not agree more with your comments in this video, take your time with a larger bike as it will have more power the braking will be strange at first and so will the handling but to really get to know a bigger bike is to book a track day this will really help you to get a better understanding of how your bike stops and starts,these videos are very well put together cracking job, ride safe sweet

Greate advice. When I did my test over 20 years ago the 125 that I rode for over a year on a CBT was a kawasaki KH125 two stroke, that had drum brakes and zero engine braking. The bike I took my lessons on was an ER5 Parallel twin and the engine braking was really severe, I hated it. I had planned to DAS but in the end just took my test on my 125. In those days if you did that, you were restricted to a 33 BHP for two years then free to ride anything after that. You did not need to take another test, your license automatically got upgrade the A license. I think it was a good method. The bike I bought after my test was a Kawasaki ZXR400 L5 and had it restricted for two years. After that I had the restrictor removed and got the full 65 BHP. That was great as it was way faster but I was already familiar with the bike. That was the last bike I had over 20 years ago before getting the same bike as you, the Z400 earlier this year. It is so much more comfortable the my old ZXR and I appreciate that now :-) As you can probably tell I love Kawasaki bikes. The ZXR400 was a fantastic but mad machine that red lined at 15000 revs and had a top speed of 140MPH. I still miss it, though I would not be able to spend a long time on it now without needing to see a chiropractor after :-)

I forgot to mention about the bad habits I'd built up on the 125 and how they affected me on the z400. Engine braking was huge for me too since I was so used to opening and closing the throttle constantly while I was riding. I'm a bit more used to it now but I'd easily lose 5 or 10mph without meaning to 🙈
@ozzyprogdomino8815
@ozzyprogdomino8815 2 жыл бұрын
@@ayserides The Z400 has an assisted slipper clutch which smothes things out, but you will still get more engine breaking then on your 125. I have to remember to gently touch my back break so that cars behind me know I am slowing down.

I went from my 125 to a Suzuki 650 when I was training for my full license, and I found the bigger bike SO much easier to ride. More stable, smoother, better braking, way more forgiving n terms of throttle (never stalled it once whereas I stalled my 125 a few times). Bigger bikes are just easier to ride. Full stop.

Im so bored of my 125 got my test in a month or so, cant wait to not have to sit behind cars at 50 on the twisties and actually be able to overtake and enjoy the corners! Most frustrating thing about it, i love the twisties and you have to wring the poor things neck all the time lol

Was there much of a jump in your insurance? My son will take the A2 tests next year and take on my Z400. We are still paying over a grand a year for his Z125. Keep the videos coming 👍
@ayserides
@ayserides 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately yes. £500 TPO for my 125 up to £1700 fire and theft for my z400. Biggest thing for me is the theft risk, it was only £800 TPO. If you can do anything to reduce the theft risk that will help a lot (security, garage etc). The Z series bikes and the ninjas are very desirable to theives unfortunately! Good thing for me and probably your son is every year we don't crash our insurance will come down a lot. We get a year older + bike becomes less valuable + more no claims + having held licence for a year longer. In my case my insurance should come down £2-300 a year.

@lukecowell7516
@lukecowell7516 2 жыл бұрын
That all depends on the 125 they are all slow 4strokes now I had a full power tzr 125 Belgarda well I say 125 it had a 175 kit on it and all the mods it was like 39hp and very light 400s were slow compared to my tzr I used to play with a cbr 600 back then on the twisties obviously not straight line speed. I've just done my bike test after 15 years of not riding and my 1st bike is a fz1n it a 1000cc and to be honest it's as fast as you ride it I think it's a great 1st bike happily potters around in 6th at 40mph Or it will do 180mph flat out down the m.way it's not standard it's had all the mods and a quickshift kit it's about 170hp now and still perfectly fine as a beginner bike it's a bit jeckle and Hyde

When I went up to the sv650 on my das from my honda cbf125 I felt like I had to relearn everything again because it was so different but it didn't take as long to learn if you get what I mean.
@ayserides
@ayserides 2 жыл бұрын
Yup exactly the same with me. I practiced all of my slow control on my 125 ready for the mod 1, but then had to relearn it all because the big bike was so much different! It look me maybe 3 or 4 weeks to get used to the bigger bike and only now after 6 months I'd say that I know 100% the power and handling characteristics I also found the bigger bike a lot easier to ride especially for slow control
