How hard can it be to sustain a zero waste lifestyle? Host Simone Sullivan visited Stevie Van Horn, a woman who manages to keep down years of her landfill waste inside a mason jar. Broadly followed along as she made her own toothpaste and talked to her friends about the difficulty of being zero waste in an environment of disposable coffee cups and one-use packaging.

Nope, I don't think so. When we run out of oil, millennials will be freaking out wondering why Uber eats can't deliver clean drinking water. Anyone who can gut a fish, start a fire, and make shelter will be just fine *wink-wink*. Our government decides what we can buy, not the consumer. If the government bans gas cars then.... Think about it? USA banned alcohol, they have the power to make the difference. The end-consumer only has the choice between the lesser of two evils.

Based on current reserves of not just oil but also methane deposits and also methane hydrates the world will not run out of fossil fuels for even the next 100 years. The struggle will come with us leaving them in the ground and reducing consumption of fossil fuel on both a per capita basis and an absolute basis in a world with ever increasing population.

Also consider a low waste, rather than no waste, approach: reduce waste where you can, and don't beat yourself up too much when you can't, or feel that a particular ask is just going too far. A personal example: I sweat profusely and need a heavy-duty antiperspirant. The zero waste deodorants leave me feeling sweaty and gross, with embarrassing stains on my clothing. So while most of my other bathroom products are plastic free (shampoo bars etc) my antiperspirant is the kind that comes in plastic packaging. Yes, I've tried natural and zero waste options. No, I have never found one that works.

Even if you can’t go 100% zero-waste, every little bit matters! Even just re-using things can help. You can re-use food containers (ex. Butter and sour cream containers) as Tupperware, wash plastic straws and use them, using grocery bags as trash bags, cutting old shirts to make rags for washing tables and dishes, and so much more. And just using the absolute most of what you have, scraping out every last drop, helps too. It’s the little things that matter, too.
@danifaja87

*LOVE THIS!* If you’re not ready to go 100% plastic free, there are *small changes you can make that make a HUGE difference.* The main things that have great plastic alternatives are: *-Reusable water bottles and coffee cups* *-Bamboo toothbrushes* *-REUSABLE STRAWS* (at the very least decline plastic straws) *-Reusable shopping bags* *-Reusable cotton/bamboo/fabric makeup remover pads* *-Plastic Free dental floss (I personally like it better than its plastic counterparts)* *-Plastic Free toothpicks* If anyone is still wondering why going plastic free is so important, it’s because every piece of plastic that has ever been created is still in existence. Plastic is not biodegradable but it is photodegradable. This means that when it ends up in the water, all the elements break it down into nano form, thus releasing tons of toxins. These toxins are then eaten/absorbed by marine life that eventually end up on your dinner plate. So not only are we dealing with huge pieces of plastic but also tons of microplastic. It’s also causing havoc for our marine life (sea turtles and straws, marine life thinking plastic bags are jelly fish, etc). This doesn’t do the problem justice but at least it gives you a tiny taste of why eliminating as much plastic as reasonably possible from your life is so important. Or at the very least, raise awareness amongst your family and friends. *If anyone is interested, Amazon, Etsy, and Package Free Shop all carry plastic free items!* For anyone boycotting Amazon, the last two are great places to start. Or you can search on Amazon and then go to the products actual website to purchase. If using Amazon, be aware that they ship all of their stuff in plastic. So if you’re ordering, try to compile them into one shipping package. You can also go meat-free a few days out of the week. (Excessive packaging) Factory farming is also a HUGE contributor to global warming. Either way, the most important thing is to educate yourself. Tons of great resources out there. Even if you think you can’t make a difference, you can! It’s called collective change. *If you’re still interested in more information, there are tons of great resources out there.* -5 Gyres -The Ocean Cleanup -The Ocean Conservancy -Instagram -Google (or Ecosia- they plant a tree whenever you use their search engine) the GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH! So funny that this seems foreign to people. Being conscious of your imprint is the biggest step to help contribute to a better earth tomorrow. Consumerism is seldom brought up when it comes to a green agenda and realistically that is the biggest issue. It's amazing how much better you eat and take care of your health doing less waste. Most packaged foods are garbage anyways. Hope it inspires and helps someone but this is like common sense 101.

When zero waste becomes soooo connected to your own physical trash that the huge emissions from flying is not the centre concern but the plastic packaging at the airport... I’m all for zero waste but a to high focus on end consumer waste neglects to notice that behind all trash the supplying company produces 10 times more. This is how 100 companies get by producing 80% of the worlds emissions and trash. Post consumer is the most visible yes but what happens before a product or service gets to us has the most impact, not how it was packaged in its last steppes on the journey!

I will continue to be as low-waste as I can. Being the change you wish to see in the world serves as a witness to others about how one can live differently. While it's true that corporations need to take more responsibility, we control the market, and your dollar is a vote. If everyone stopped buying an item, you can bet it would no longer be in production. We need to have accountability for everything that we have control of as individual consumers if we expect corporations to do the same. Continuing to make convenience purchases in plastic is not a valid excuse this day in age, as we are constantly being bombarded by the reality of global warming. Take your dollar, go vote for the planet, believe in the ripple effect, change the world.

She likely either uses a form of birth control that stops her period entirely or has found a menstrual cup that works for her. Well-being and health comes first, so those with health issues and disabilities won't be able to be at this level, but there are things they could do to reduce their waste without putting their health at risk. For example, they can do their best to buy their jams and peanut butters in glass jars. I've also found yogurt in glass jars.

Not as indepth as I thought this video would be ... maybe could've showed some products she still chooses to buy (or how to deal with all the waste-products we have before going zero waste during transition to 0 waste)

Yeah, like spending a day with her is really showing you her true reality. I'd like to live with her for six month or a year and than see if she truly lives zero waste like. BTW: check this out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ereHaNpq3qe7l3k.html

This lifestyle is unreachable by made middle-income families. The bulk store nearest me is about 45 minutes away and it's expensive. I'm mixed Black and my hair requires special products not available at bulk stores. Also, I work to sustain my family and it's hard to make time to prepare all my products at home. I do my best at getting things packaged in glass and try to get recycled toilet paper. And also, after visiting Germany in 2000 and seeing that people using the stores' plastic bags where charged at least .25 Euros for them, I started using reusable bags and that has never stopped since then, with the exception of pandemic delivery and drive up.

All bags now have to be biodegradable here. It costs almost an euro for a biodegradable or a paper bag. I usually get paper bags since my cats enjoy destroying it in a matter of hours.
