If your just looking for a paycheckn the trades or are midly interested in mechanics as a hobby, literally choose any other trade. Being a mechanic is a lifestyle you have to dedicate your self to it completely. You can't half ass it or you will find your self in a rut quick. I spend about 10-20hrs a week learning about all different things. Get good at electrical. I'd say it took me 5 years of hard real world problems with hands on experience before the veil lifted and electrical became easy for me. The ohm meter and powerprobe are probably my best friend. Don't be afraid to fail or look stupid, because you will all the time. Pro tip: always ohm out the electrical connection you make and the grounds in a circuit during construction and troubleshooting. Eletrical harnesses are very simple to make and troubleshoot if you verify your tool and connection at every single step.

It’s a great time to be a tech now you can make a lot of money very common for guys to make 100k+ per year. You will not make good money unless you are good though. The biggest problem with techs not making good money now is themselves you need to be good with computers, wiring, diagnostic work, engine work and keep up with technology. If your just a parts changer you will hate this career. Anyone can change an engine, Transmission and suspension parts that’s easy, you make money for the knowledge being the only guy that can figure out complicated problems.

I worked G.M. dealership for 44 years retired with all Master Gm and all ASEs All the training and having the best diagnostic tools and hand tools. Around the year 2000, the pay change did not match the experience. We had services and 35% customer pay; now it is a 75% warranty that you can never match the labor that they give you. And if you find a faster/better way of doing the job they will adjust lower because they found out. There are very few that offer a 401K and decent healthcare benefits. And why is this the only profession that pays at flat rate labor time ? Diagnosing is a lot harder because there are more systems and intermittent concerns. Remember this is the rule working for a dealership. THE MORE YOU LEARN, THE LESS YOU EARN.
@JimmyMakingitwork
@JimmyMakingitwork 3 жыл бұрын
I’d say we can diag easier, with modern equipment....although there is more to diag and the cars themselves have gotten more difficult to repair. More specialty tools are required. They also seem to be lowering the labor times compared to 10+ years ago.

Been a Diesel mechanic and Automotive for 20 years. When I first started it was the baby boomers in charge. They would yell and scream over little things. They were the worst. You did not need school to get into the door. I worked my way from the bottom up. It was snap on or mac back in the day. Everyone wanted to be a mechanic. It took a long time to make top pay. The last 10 years. I have seen the shortage get worse and worse. The pay and benefits have increased dramatically the last 3 years. Guys with 3 years can make high 20s. When I first started it took 10 years to achieve that pay. 15 year guys plus can make high 30s in Fleet maintenance. Foreman make mid 40s. Mechanics are treated pretty well. Because we are in high demand. My shop has lots of overtime and their is always something to do. We just lost our parts manager who was a machinist. He was 56. It was a big loss. He had enough of wrenching on top of fixing trucks. The average mechanic is around my age mid 40s. Nice video!

Strange video. The only reason anyone works is because of the pay. Some quick math reveals that while pay has gone up in nominal terms, its actually gone down in terms of purchasing power and disposable income. A buck in 1995 is worth a buck eighty nine in 2022. So if you were making 45k per year in 95, then to stay the same you need 85k now. It really no surprise the talent pool of techs gets a little smaller every day.

I would say go ahead and start working as a GS (general service) tech at a shop that does complete auto repair. Focus on getting really good at that and ask your employer what you can do to move up the ranks. You’ll likely learn a lot hanging out with the higher level technicians and asking questions. I think that’s a great way to get your feet wet in the auto industry.
