I can understand HRH not wanting all the fingers in the dish, it would be for her health too. Not everyone washes their hands and cold/flu/sickness would be easily transmitted through the dish

Agree, but the palace is the home base for the royals. In spite of what you may have heard, the vast majority do like the Royal family. It’s a 1000 year old institution that defines England.

@@brianellis6845 isn't the palace owned by the crown and not the family? Even though the monarch is the head of state they don't technically own some of the estates and jewles

They don’t own Buckingham Palace. The Crown owns it. It is not the monarch’s private property, so why would they pay to have it renovated? Would you pay to have your office renovated?
