Thank you for everyone’s contributions, there’s some great insights in the comments here. A common theme that’s come up has been on the meaningful vs surface-deep conversations that are typical to reality TV and what that infers about the cast. Remember that they’re there to be entertainers, not educators, the two aren’t mutually exclusive but it’s incredibly tough to do both effectively. It’s a fair point to say I’m probably not a typical cast member for the show, as well you may not be either, had you been put on the island, so here’s something to ponder... I think the deeper a person is, the more likely their views are to be too subtle, contrary or alarming to society at large. The whole point of the show is to have archetypal roles being played out by the contestants. “The hero” “the maiden” “the villain” etc. When you have someone with a high degree of depth, they are, by design, less likely to slot into one of those categories, which makes them a bad TV character given the goal and required expediency of the show. Such an interesting perspective and i think in light of what happened to Sophie Gradon and her battle with mental health a lot of what you had to say is so refreshing to hear ..it's eerie how you pointed all of this out and then just today it was announced that she chose to end her life ..i dont think many people ever truly understand what their getting themselves in for and its truly sad

What he revealed about Jessica Hayes and Naomi; about Jess being plucked from the mock cast and replacing Naomi initially; that's incredible. Have to wonder if Naomi mugging off Jess was retaliation for her taking her spot at the start.

After watching this, I can finally pinpoint what bothered me about the show. You never REALLY get to know them. You know their personality, but they never dive deep or anything

I'm glad I made it to the end of the video and heard that bit on Zoe. Your reactions to her rudeness were always so chill and nice so I'm happy to hear you say what everyone was thinking. Idk if it was the editing but it seems like she despised you for no reason. You were well-liked by everyone BUT her. It just seemed fishy and I never understood it. I get not liking someone but she went out of her way to be over the top about it. I hated that.

Interesting podcast, thanks. One thing that might have changed from your year is the voting system. Were you or others influenced as to who to pick when it came to voting off, and did you all know beforehand? This year for example, Eyal picking Hayley made no sense unless he (and the others) was advised he had to pick her. Similarly last year Kem and Amber didn't chose one another and that (conveniently) resulted in him staying. Also the order is "cleverly" set so the cliff hanger is last. How much of that is rehearsed beforehand?

That was so insightful! It's reassuring to hear about behind the scenes. I was skeptical of the show as the drama feels a bit planned, with the timing and cameras already being positioned. It's also strange you never see them cooking or eating.

I’m surprised more people aren’t leaving the villa and ending up in a mental hospital. That sounds a bit dramatic haha I know, but I genuinely do not understand how the people in the villa can stand to be around one another in this villa for that amount of time. I know that if I was I’d be fucking clawing my eyes out haha. After two weeks in the sun with my family I want to not see their face for a while.. never mind 6-8 weeks!!!

I feel like the “lock down “ is really toxic and can be a form of abuse , having him explain everything has really opened my eyes to the true love island experience and if I was in there I think I might come out with anxiety and depression..... it’s shocking

Hi! What book are you guys talking about, it sounds really interesting - Jordan (John?) Peterson?

I am pleasantly surprised by how engaging and pleasant to watch this guy is, I know that sounds terribly prejudiced to be surprised, , but I admit that I do make assumptions about the kind of characters who put themselves forward for that kind of 24/7 close scrutiny . I imagined that they must be vain low IQ self obsessed types with no thought given at all to the invasiveness of what's ahead for them. He is obviously intelligent and informed about the filming aspects we , the public, are interested in. I enjoyed listening to him. He has an impressive vocabulary for a young man of his generation.

I worry for the new series cast. Some seeeeerious counselling would be needed for these people (imo)

Very interesting

Just watched the whole video now of Chris talking about love island season one , and even though he felt like and problably did not act much like himself, he does not come across as that different now, apart from him being much more open now. Somehow he already seemed more intelligent than the others there, possibly not for the things he was doing, but rather for the things he was NOT doing (saying dumb things, acting shallow or hypocritical etc.... like most others were). He's just way more interesting to listen to than the others too now I finally can hear him talk more. I can totally reconise how he was more interested in the big picture process behind a show like Love Island rather than the zoomed-in exprience itself, because he's just so much more seems like an abstract thinker than a concrete thinker like most of the others. Abstract thinkers wonder 'why ' things are the way they are, while concrete thinkers just take things as face value. It would be interesting to know his MBTI. I'd say INTP or INTJ (introverted abstract thinking)

Hi Chris! A couple of speculative curiosity-driven questions and observations. My productivity has disappeared since I've fallen into the bottomless pit of binge-watching season 1 of Love Island last week (I've only gotten to the point where you've been kicked out so pls no more spoilers) and I'm guessing you hear this quite often but you seemed like the smartest and the most normal guy there (normie in a good way). And I was wondering, as you hinted in the podcast, that there was a pressure on you to be more like the rest, and in a sense dumb yourself down and be as much of a lad as you can be, when it seems like in reality you're more of a witty introvert. And thinking about that now, with the knowledge of what you've said here regarding purely villa-related talk being heavily encouraged, it makes me wonder how people in that setting managed to make conversations that would allow them to actually connect. And yet nonetheless it seems some of you guys really did connect and become good friends. At the same time, I could also see how a lot of people in there potentially wouldn't be up for abstract intellectual topics rather than gossip. But anyhow, I wonder what your thoughts are on this. And I wonder what you expected to get out of the experience, knowing yourself and knowing what sort of people would be there -- although perhaps I'm attributing you more knowledge and deliberation than you actually had at the time, so please do correct me here if I'm wrong. And also, if you'd be so kind to save me the google-ing, I'm curious as to what you did at Uni and why you chose to follow the career you did instead (under the assumption that your degree wasn't related to what you do now)?
