Ever wonder what it takes to be a part of the Marine Special Operations Command?
More than 100 Marines accomplished the first step in the grueling process of becoming a Critical Skills Operator after successfully completing Phase I of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command’s Assessment and Selection aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Feb. 6, 2015.
The next MARSOC screening team tour is scheduled for West Coast units on the following dates;
Marine Corps Base 29 Palms, Calif., March 3-4
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., March 10-12
Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., March 18-19
Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Az., March 30-April 1
Marine Corps Base Hawaii, April 7-8

look everyone. if you are seriously thinking about MARSOC contact a MARSOC recruiter for all your questions. They will tell you everything you need to know. As for the guys that arent Marines yet that want to go MARSOC, worry about becoming a Marine first. You'll need a few years in before being able to submit a package for MARSOC

+redtib2003 What is the general time a Marine has to have on his contract to even think about requesting A&S? I've read 90 days and seeing your other comments you attended A&S so is this accurate?

+xSakima You have to at least have one year but that doesnt mean they will accept you for A&s. This is a young mans game, they wont take you if you 28 29. Just be very persistent with your goal. Be a stellar marine and stay on top your shit and you will get your chance.

Dead poolmonkey Thanks for the reply friend. As +Redtib2003 suggests I am taking it one step at time right now, which means tackling MCRD Parris Island first. I'm a young individual - haven't even graduated yet. I have plenty of time to prepare for A&S it would seem, so that's great!

+Dead poolmonkey I know I should ask this question to a recruiter but I'm about to be 22 in December and I'm trying to get my shit together to join The Marines...I just want to know if I'm still at a young age to join, not only The Marines but for Marsoc as will or Force Recon...Also if I'm able to get a 0321 contract-Force Recon would that help to attend A&S..? Again I should be asking a recruiter but I just want different opinions...Thanks

Chris Hernandez Its alright man yes you are still young. Dude get in the recruiting station you are young and could still get a recon contract if you are in great shape. Of course it will help but you dont go straight into force recon. You have to work your way onto a force recon unit. But any marine can try out for Raider regiment you just need a little experience before you do.

3 things: 1. MARSOC needs a reserve component. As much as we love our Army Brothers, there should be no reason we are losing stellar Recon and MARSOC Marines to the 19th and 20th Special Forces Groups. So many good Marines are willing to reenlist and train up to try and attend A&S and ITC, BUT, they just want to focus on school, a career, or to simply spend more time with family. We used to have a 4th Marine Raider Battalion. 2. MARSOC should have a Warrant Officer rank and position/ billet within the T/O like the Green Berets do. Say a Marine that is already a Corporal or Sergeant has just passed ITC and been selected to head to a MSOT. He is looking at picking up Staff and maybe Gunny/ MSgt., and he intends to finish out his 20 years in a great unit like MARSOC (as opposed to a conventional unit). Giving them the chance to become a “037X Special Operations Warrant Officer” would not only challenge him with more responsibility, but provide more money to earn for the rest of his career and retirement. He would just have to pass a screening, Warrant Officer Candidate School, and maybe a “MARSOC Warrant Officer Course”. Compare this to the only other option a CSO has- attending OCS, TBS, and maybe IOC, then serving a tour in the FMF before returning to MARSOC just to have a couple pumps on a MSOT before getting put in a staff position. Ideally, this Warrant Officer position would spend more time in an operational capacity on a MSOT, Vice the command time of a SOO. 3. MARSOC should have their own aviation component. Having a dedicated aviation wing like the 160th SOAR would not only increase competency in aviators that fly for MARSOC, but a stronger trust in pilots by CSOs/SOOs, and a chance to further the careers of Marine aviators and stand out from their peers. A short selection course like the 160th SOAR’s Green Platoon would work too. We could even offer Warrant Officer Flight Contracts to enlisted Marines instead of losing them to the Army. Giving our Marines options helps to retain them instead of losing them to another branch. Simple changes to retain quality Marines. Everyone wins.

These are all great ideas and I agree, but the aviation part is most likely not happening since with the new commandant and his 2030 plan. The Marine Corps has already gotten rid of tanks and moved them back to the Army while by 2030 all Naval Aviation is getting moved back to the Navy. Trying to cut costs and focus more on what the Marine Corps is really for, the infantry and those that support it.

start working on your fitness right now. Obviously lots of running will help. But one thing people underestimate is body strength required to do things like climbing. I would highly recommend that you consider Military Calisthenic. If you want to develop to do Recon I would recommend doing life saving to give you swimming strength and control but you have time to build that up. Also consider Marine Division Recon which is an alternative to Force Recon. It is a highly elite unit as well and there may be more opportunities in that field.

Also to express my confidence for the future of this country simply by knowing we have people in our country, and in our Corps like you, that are willing and capable of what doing what you do! I owe my Drill Instructors a debt of gratitude I can never repay. But I will continue to try. I'm no longer in the Marine Corps. My time has come and gone. Now I serve our country in the medical field, caring for our nations veterans and seeing to it they receive the best care I can possibly give to them. For all future Marines who may read this. If you're thinking about joining us, believe it or not, your mind is already made up. Just do it, if you can. You will etch your name into history as part of a family, the greatest fighting force the world has ever known. You will forever be part of a family that includes names like "Chesty Puller, John Basilone, Dan Daly, Smedley Butler, Brad Kasal, R. Lee Ermey, James Anderson jr, Eugene Sledge, Oscar P. Austin, Carlos Hathcock, and many many more." The time for pondering is over. If you express the desire to be part of the best then damn it, do it! And go all the way! A will that goes beyond death, that is the answer to become any great warrior you could think of. What you believe, you believe unto death, a will to never lose a fight while one is conscious. There you have it, they're just men like all Marines, like all humans. People who watch this video must develope their capacity to love others, especially women, before themselves, then you become a true Raider. The funny this is, a rifleman with a mind level that can go from 0 to insane is the most dangerous breed in the Corps, for when there is no death in the mind, there is no stopping the mind

Ahh to be 20 again, Looks like fun...I was an 0311 (Rifleman) in '74 in 7/2 at Pendleton and qual'd Expert with Rifle and Pistol ( I grew up hunting and shooting) and was maxing the PFT (I was All State in Cross Country in H.S. and a pretty good Cornerback on a very good varsity football team, so once I could do 20 pullups the PFT was easy to max for me). Back then Recon would hold a pre selection (basically the Marine Corps PFT with a couple 15 mile humps) a couple times a year and once I passed I got orders to Recon Indoc (aka Boot Camp on Steroids). LOTS of PT there...then off to Basic Recon Course (BRC). In my BRC class we dropped over half the class on the first and second day which were pool days. Most of the guys who were there on Day 3 graduated other than a few physical injuries that got bumped/dropped. My BRC class started with 48 Marines and we graduated 13.

This looks like all the same stuff we did as a Boat Company in 1/6. Pool at least 3 times a week. Brutal. Competition was unbelievable. They constantly put us against each other to cut out who would be attending which schools. But the pool …. man that's where the rubber met the road. AFTER a week long qual. There were around 7 of us left that qualified as CWS Q. RIGHT AFTER the Q qual, they tossed us back in. I thought, we were just getting messed with. Just another game. But of course no onw wants to quit. After another 4o minutes and 4 Marines dropped, I dropped out which left only two. I still remember their names. 5 more minutes and there was only one left. They had to help him out the pool. THEN they told us, ok "yous" is going to Combat Swimmer, and you, the one, are going to MCIWS School to be an instructor. Oh, that's what this was about? lol

Out of all those challenges, holding bricks and walking underwater scares me the most. At the time of saying this message, I am a high school freshman (my year ends this month and soon to be sophomore). I've done cross-country, wrestling, and track. I've run through some pretty tough terrain. Despite all the solo sports, I have a lot of confidence in my teamwork skills. But besides that, I may have a fear of heights but I've never gone that deep underwater. I can swim but that's deep. Some things in the military, I feel prepared to do once I get to boot camp. Things like jumping out of a plane or you know. But hey, I guess nobody knows what happens until it happens. I'm just training my body for the worst. Edit 1: A year later and my fear of heights is nonexistent. Perhaps I'll return to this comment annually. The bricks no longer seem that bad.

I’m going into sophomore year and you don’t need too worry about the bricks. As long as you know how too swim, and run at least a little bit every week it’s easy and actually really fun. I grab heavy rocks and concrete off the bottom of lakes and carry them as far as I can no problem. Get some goggles and try it

I am about a year from fulfilling my promise to my mother to finishing college before i enlist in the USMC. I want to be an 0311 rifleman and one day become an 0372 Critical Skills Operator for MARSOC. I want to be on the VERY front lines fighting and making tactical decisions, and employing advanced combat tactics, if and when the need arises. I want to use my skills to protect my fellow Marines and help us carry out the mission. Even now i am a very skilled marksmen and can shoot quite well on the move with heavy gear on or take long shots and print great groups on target. I have extensive knowledge of many weapons systems and love to work out, hiking, running, swimming, lifting etc. and I love a challenge. I am not naive, i know that the USMC corps is WAY more challenging than I could comprehend so I want to improve and put my skills to use in the corps. I have talked to ALOT of Marines both Enlisted and Officers in the 03 MOS, currently enlisted and former, as well as recruiters. All of them say that, that experience is more likely to happen if I go Enlisted, over the Officer route. I figure that I'll always will have my degree to fall back on when it comes to building my future financially, but i’ll only be able to be a Marine once. Can anyone weigh in on whether or not they think i should go the Enlisted Route or the Officer Route in terms of being able to have the experience that I am looking for? Thank you ahead of time. And thank all of you Marines for your service.
@Stefano5441
@Stefano5441 8 жыл бұрын
If you can manage and qualify for Marine OCS you should definitely go the officer route. Not only will you get to lead Marines, but you won't be getting hazed and treated like a fucking boot for 4 years straight. I too was once very moto before enlisting and had set goals for myself, but now I am just counting down the days until I get out. Life in an infantry unit has left a very bad taste in my mouth, but every one handles it differently. It's not all running and gunning like you and anyone else who has never served in the Marine Corps might think. The other huge part of it is that every day 5 am police call, fisting community shitters until they're clean enough to drink from, getting called to formation every other weekend and having libo secured because some dumbshit in the battalion couldn't handle his alcohol. One day you will understand, hopefully not as first hand though if you decide to go the officer route. Just saying man, really think about it. Peace time Marine Corps is not the place to be. Done running my suck because I can write a book about why you shouldn't go the enlisted route (provided you are capable and or motivated enough to go officer). Also, if you get the chance do some research on Officer's Infantry Course. Don't know much about it myself but I hear its pretty hardcore, if MARSOC training gets your dick hard then I would be willing to bet that OIC would too.

+Stephen Farkas hey I can't thank you you enough for your extremely valuable insight. You've definitely given me a lot to think about. What you've told me is very consistent with what my good friends in the Corps have been telling me. I also appreciate you giving it to me straight up instead of just dismissing me as a dumbass overly motivated idiot like a few have in the past haha I know that this is a huge goal that I can't fully appreciate the gravity of, that's why I ask. I just want to make sure that I have all the training school options as an enlisted guy and the same opportunity to say I actually fought for and defended my country IF the day comes. But like I said I will definitely do some more serious thinking. I'm about to go on my daily Ruck run so I'll have some reflecting to do. And of course, thank you for your service sir and Godspeed!

+camas77721 As a Mustang Grunt( enlisted infantry and infantry officer) . I can provide perspective on the roles of the the enlisted grunt path verses the officer grunt path. If you want to do, be an operator, and a first line supervisor go the enlisted path. If you want to start as a leader, and become an executive go the officer path. Both paths in the infantry are mentally and physically challenging, but different. BTW Marine first, then infantry......then maybe raider or recon. Remember the Marine Corps is small, the infantry community, smaller yet, and the recon community tiny, and raiders and Force Recon a handful in small brotherhood that is crazy competitive to get into.

That's the thing about MARSOC. They don't want that info out there because they are looking for a specific type. If you don't fit that bill naturally, they don't want you. The first thing they will tell you is they will gladly select nobody in your entire class if there isn't a single candidate that they like. Just come prepared, be a team player and give it your all. Seals you can go straight down the pipeline from graduating Navy boot camp to request becoming a seal. Everyone compares each special forces, but in the end we’re all on the same team. I have my preference of Army Delta in my personal opinion. It’s a very selective few that must first pass boot camp, Ranger School, even if you’re the top in class for physical superiority, don’t get excited because Army Delta doesn’t choose based upon you being #1 in your class. They choose very few and they choose the Ranger who is best fit for the task at hand. Mentality is absolutely critical regardless of what SPECIAL OPS you decide to join because if you’re not ready mentally, it’s beyond a reasonable doubt that you will fail. The military has always used the method of breaking you down and building you up. They’re testing your mental toughness to take on whatever challenges lay ahead. If you break in boot camp what are your chances of making when bullets start flying by your head….

Running long distances whilst carrying weight, stamina/ endurance training, strength training, being able to be uncomfortable (snow, rain, cold, little sleep, etc.) Youll be able to get some experience and training/ access to training, through the Marines already.

I think if a man in their 30’s early 40’s would be an asset to the United States military because most recruits come straight from high school. How much knowledge has a man who’s lived in life and never given up, a lot. As long as you’re a man who’s learned from his mistakes. Maturity, discipline is more often than not going to be extremely higher than fresh recruits out of high school. As long as you’re able to pass PT, MEPS, have a clean legal history or no felonies at least. I believe older men could bring forth a lot of life experience with trials and tribulations. If you’ve worked out throughout your 40 years I’d say you’re more prepared if not going to outperform the young guns. Fear from drill sergeants I personally wouldn’t be afraid at all. Just do what your told, listen and don’t talk unless instructed to do so. You’ll learn far more from listening than you can from talking.

And learn a second language... I’ve talked to a couple MARSOC guys and they all say that... the fighting and the PT you can learn in the Corp, but learning a language fluently is gold and it is not something you can learn in a couple weeks. Learn Arabic, Urdu, Farsi or something like that... you also get more money because of a language skill.... just something to think about...
