I've been doing stand up since I was 16. I am 21 now and I've learned that other than focusing on getting on stage you need to have a set. Make sure to write as much as you can. Not having discipline will affect you later on.

I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of comics quit, whether they did it once or for 5+ years. I made it to ten years. I’m respected as a joke writer. Only thing I did not do is travel and market myself (much). Many comics start that process (too) early. Be deliberate. I have great material but no one knows who I am. So work on being funny first, but once you know you have something, promote it heavily and go out and network. Luckily for me, I can now go out and many of my bad habits are long gone and I write tons of material per month these days. About three to five new minutes a week. But I regret not hitting the big cities until this year.

I've been working on my act for four years. At this point, I can Open/Feature for Headliners, which I have. I am in no rush to headline. It scares me how many people come in and in their first year are trying to headline. They think they have it figured out. But their time on Stage says otherwise.

It’s called experience! You can practice on the fact of anticipation but you have to get your lumps and bruises like when you started chucking and moving while being a baby. Some people have it natural and doesn’t take too much but to be them selves at all times, others it’s an act to make money like a job. Please don’t take advice from a comedian that ain’t met they goals trying to discourage others on they way

If you can't make me laugh, smile, or grin in two or three minutes you get a 👎. This is for new or old comedians and I treat EVERYONE the same. I have had new people pass this test and old veterans who I like having an off day and fail.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Losing a parent is difficult. The best way is to honor your relationship with your father. He would be so proud. He will see it all. Ask for his help. He's one of your Angels now🙏 I am going to try and do pretty much the same as your comment. My whole life, people have told me I'm funny. I've watched all the great comics my entire life. I've got tons of material in my soul that needs to come out 😂 So, I figured why be scared? If everyone was too scared to do something, nothing would get done ever. So, I need to trust my gut, give it a try, and see what happens. What do I have to lose? We don't know what we are capable of unless we take a chance. God Bless you. I wish you well and blessings on your journey 🙏 Go out there and do your Father proud!!

Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

Write material that you think is funny and sign up for an open mic (most are 3-5 minute sets). TBH, stage presence will get you further than most material, so just getting up there and getting used to speaking in front of strangers is the biggest hurdle.
