Actually it is the duty of the host nation to provide security at the embassies. Most embassy compounds are also guarded by private security contractors. There are Marines who are tasked with guarding embassies, but they don’t do it alone

Here in the Philippines, your embassy here is guarded by a member of SAF. An elite member of the Phil. National police. These guys are experts in urban warfare, in fact you can see a land rover defender with a M60 machine gun on top guarding your embassy..

Vikram Nandakumaran Benghazi was a temporary diplomatic annex. They just rented a rich guys house so that the Ambassador could go out there for a couple of weeks. They had almost none of the security measures that an actual embassy or consulate would have.

Vikram Nandakumaran I was a Marine Security Guard for 3 years, and after seeing the mind numbing amount of bureaucracy in the DoS I am confident when I say; "Hillary Clinton never saw those memos." There are so many aides, deputy secretaries, under secretaries, deputy under secretaries, and bureaus in the Department that it is almost impossible that she personally would have seen them. I am no fan of hers, but I also won't lay something at her feet that I can say with nearly absolute certainty, she had no knowledge of.

Vikram Nandakumaran Also, they did have local security, and several Diplomatic Security Agents on scene. However, most local guards aren't armed, and 3 or 4 DS agents don't do much against a company sized attack. DoS has certain guidelines and rules regarding the amount of US security personnel and infrastructure because their job is diplomacy. The Marines could make an Embassy so secure that nothing would ever happen, but it would not allow State Officers to be effective diplomats.

The Marines say they defend their embassies by lost their own embassy in Tehran (Iran) 4th of November 1979 because the Marines were afraid of a large group of unarmed protesters and students. The Marines surrendered and became hostages for 444 days. That is a historical fact.

Pretty sure if someone tried to storm an occupied embassy now they’d be met with a couple of drones firing a couple of hellfire missiles.
