What is it like being a Police Officer? There are many things you don't see when an officer drives by you. There are questions you probably wish you could ask them. I made this video to share my perspective from my 8 years of experience in Law Enforcement.

First off, I love your creativity with the video+telling your story. I agree that in some cases people don't like being told what to do which makes them get defensive at times. Me as an individual I really like someone being direct and giving me directions (whether it's law enforcement or coming from a peer). I posted my first video last month and a close friend gave me some feedback. It was very direct and I respected that. Even though the video was not for them, the fact they were comfortable telling me was huge for me. Thank you for your service, it looks like you also have a passion for youtube; love that!

It took me time to understand exactly how I wanted to share my experiences here on KZfaq. I’ve always wanted to create story like videos and be creative and I finally decided to do so. So I really appreciate this comment and your feedback. As far as law enforcement, some of us we are geared more towards structure and that may be why you operate better that way. Thank you for watching and I’ll stop by and check out your video in a few. Stay safe!

It's not about being told what to do. If you don't respect someone of course you're not going to listen to them. No one is going to respect someone who is legally allowed to lie to you to get the answers they want from you, or isn't held to the same standards and being punished and prosecuted the same way any citizen would be. I respect you for striving to be one of the good ones and trying to change the stigma. Police are hated because the "good cops" don't hold the bad ones accountable. Police as a whole get away with way too much in regards to doing their jobs improperly, or receive special treatment when they've done something wrong simply because they're an officer. Officers should be held to a HIGHER standard than civilians and be kept on an even tighter leash. You are given a position of authority and need to respect the power you have rather than abuse it like most officers do. You're PUBLIC SERVANTS after all, right? Without tax payers, the police would not be funded. Police DO hide things, through "internal investigations" and paid administrative leave until the publicity of their negative actions dies down. There is no transparency, and no independent prosecution. There is no accountability if an officer can be removed from the force in one jurisdiction, and just move cities and repeat the same toxic process. There is no malpractice similar to doctors where if you have reason to be removed, you're barred from that position and have serious consequences. Until things like this change, I don't think officers will ever be viewed as someone who's actually trying to protect and serve the community. Poor response times, straight up ignoring certain calls or reports about petty crime/theft, the list goes on. Many times a victim doesn't feel like a cop is actually going to improve a situation. Again, thank you for trying to be the change you want to see, but you as an officer need to put HEAVY pressure from within to make these changes a reality. Being a good cop is not enough if you're not willing to advocate and fight for change within the force and actively remove the terrible, corrupt cops that fill a lot of precincts across the US. Best of luck, and stay safe.

I appreciate anyone that takes the time to write a comment like yours because at the end of the day this is a conversation that sparks many emotions. I left law enforcement two years ago after 8 years so I’m no longer on the force but I do agree with you that they should always be held to a higher standard as they should be. I will add though that in some situations when there is respect given it should be returned and it does not always play out that way. Like I said in the video any officer that is not representing the badge in a good way need to see their way out. We also need to remember this is a two way relationship. And both law enforcement and the public need to come to terms and the media needs to use their platform to also promote the good being done and not just the evil, which will give them clicks. Everyone needs to work on something and I think we can all get on the same page. I appreciate your comment and taking the time to share your opinion. Stay safe 🙏🏽

@@Itsmoridiaz 100% and I agree the media does shine a light on the negatives in every aspect. Police, politics, anything they can do to generate clicks and views. I think many officers get that taste of power and let it go to their heads. Immediately demanding subordinance from civilians and making them seem like they're beneath them and have to follow their rules simply because they have a badge and a gun is a common occurrence unfortunately. I've had plenty of interactions with police that are very calm, civil, and respectful. Granted I'm not one to instigate issues and be aggressive but I still have respect for the cops that keep a cool head and treat you like a person. It's a very stressful line of work and not knowing what type of interaction you're about to have can make anyone on edge. Ultimately I think there needs to be a more robust training program and a more scrutinized recruitment process. It should be a privilege to have that badge. You're representing your city and should be a role model that people can look up to. It's admirable to be able to put being berated and yelled at behind you and treat the next person with compassion and respect. I certainly wouldn't want to be in their shoes. Hope your new career is treating you well and brings less stress than law enforcement!

Currently in college pursuing my CJ degree and would like to enter the law enforcement world. It's kinda been my goal for years now, but recently with all the backlash towards LEO's I'm starting to feel myself sway away from it. It's something i would love to do, but i dont think i can say i would lay my life on the line for people these days just to be disrespected both alive and dead or by taking an oath and swearing under it or not. Being the worlds best officer does not please people and unfortunately still puts the same target on your back as those who are corrupt or just bad people in general. Because of this i feel completely lost at times and am wondering if military would just be the best option. Ive never really been skilled at any sort of hands on work and cant see myself being a blue collar/tradesman. Also, sitting behind a desk all day would be depressing and just doesn't seem ideal to me. If you would like to share any advice/tips it would be greatly appreciated and hopefully keep my head clear.

I will never tell someone not to follow their dreams or try what they really want. What I will say is that you are at least aware of what you are signing up for in the beginning and will need to understand that people will push every button there is to make you loose it, but you have to be mentally ready. The academy does a good job of this I won’t lie. Especially the longer the academy is. You will do things and complete so much practical training that you will get numb to a lot of things. And none of what you learn in the academy will make sense and you won’t even feel like you will ever use it on the road, but trust me you will. It’s definitely something you have to fully commit to if you plan on doing it so that you catch yourself before you go off on someone. As far as advice, Don’t freak yourself out watching police shootings because I did that and always wondered, what if I pulled the wrong car over.. but the academy will get you ready and to the point where you will be cautious and be as ready as you can be. And try to stay away from the news. The least you know about the latest headline of why people hate you the better your days will be. This helped me push through 3 additional years because at year 5 I was very close to moving on. Obviously if you are young enough and can pick up another skill would benefit you so that you can start working on your plan B in case you don’t feel like being in law enforcement your whole life and this will give you peace of mind that you can leave it and still sustain yourself. If you ever have questions feel free to ask. Thanks for watching ✌🏽
