What It Was Like To Be A Stagecoach Driver In The Old West
Think about the stagecoach drivers of the Wild West, often nameless in tales and movies, usually the first to catch a bullet in a shootout. But let me tell you, these unsung heroes of the frontier were as bold and sturdy as they come. Their job might not seem as perilous as bein' a cowboy, gambler, soldier, or lawman, but drivin' a stagecoach required nerves of steel and a grip as firm as iron. These men, known by nicknames like 'whip', 'Charlie', 'jehu', and reinsman, were the daredevils of their time, akin to the Roman chariot racers of old. From the earliest days of stage-coaching, they carved their legacy on the dusty trails of the West, facing down dangers with a crack of their whips and a steady hand on the reins.
Long before the iron horse - that's trains, for the uninitiated - crisscrossed America, stagecoaches were the kings of the frontier roads, connecting distant towns and carrying tales from one end of the country to the other.

Thank you for your informative video. An interesting bit of information is the number of way stations that were required where horses were changed. These were many since horses were changed every 15 to 25 miles. Some stations had food but very few provided overnight accomodations. The stage companies had a lot of ranches that were contracted to provide horses and a stop over. Others were built. Stations were vulnerable to Indian attacks in which the horses were stolen. Its a very interesting part of American history. And the front wheels were smaller to decrease the turning radius.

Read about Hank Monk, Cockeyed Charlie Parkhurst. Stagecoaches were, before the advent of the Railroad, the lifeline, that connected America! East, West, North, South!!

Mostly adventure, back in those days nobody went very far away from home. Unless adventure lured them to see for themselves. Too see if the stories told were true. What most found was “disappointment” in most places. That disappointment made many desperate, desperate people do desperate things…

FWIW, Most of the stagecoach drivers were of the generation that is the same archetype of today's Gen Xers.
