I absolutely loved your short video clip midway through! My Dad introduced me to Rovering and this clip brought back so many childhood memories in the 70's of going away on boating champinships in our 1973 109. 80Km/h flat out towing a boat with a long line of cars following all itching to get past. And that unmistakable cruising transmission whine are things that I wont ever forget.

That's a great project, and I'm looking forward to seeing the conversion. The steering is terrible. Take a close look for play in the six rod end ball joints, on the three steering arm splined joints (one from the steering box and two on the relay through the chassis cross member) and the steering arms onto the swivel housings (the four studs in the housings can wear, so the arms move relative to the housings), and wear in the swivel bearings or pins can cause a lot of play. Also check the steering box adjustment. All easy stuff to fix, but you need one person to wiggle the steering wheel while the other person checks for play at each of those locations. That knocking noise - check that the exhaust is correctly aligned and secured; it sounds like the exhaust is vibrating against the body, chassis or transmission on certain harmonic frequencies.

Turns out the steering box was just holding on by a single bolt. The rest of the casing had cracked around the bolt holes. That wasn't helping and neither was all the ball joints being totally cactus.

Rhett Ashby I learn a lot about economy gauges in the Facebook comments to this video today. I can sort of see a use. I guess it helps remind you how driving style effects fuel economy.

@@davidmbudge I did not find it to have any great function having owned an econogauge equipped car for many years (Ford XE Fairmont Ghia). I imagine it was a trick feature to the common man back in the day. I guess if It makes driving frugally more entertaining then it can't be a bad thing and not pointless. If you were to alter it to respond to current draw from (and to if regen braking capable) battery system it might serve the same exact same purpose 🤔

Great idea to convert the landy. I had a series 2a for 16 years, and did a full nuts and bolts restoration. I'm dreaming of getting one again to do and electric conversion on. So I'll be following you with great interest, curious about the the choices you make, hope i can learn and contribute. As for the steering, it should be nice and tight. If not, check the steering box, some are adjustable, and the steering linkages.

@@rdflo6739 I love landys actually I own a series 2 197p just like the video, I'm from Costa Rica and back in the days the land rovers and first gen Range rovers were assembled here, the only country in the american continent were land rovers were assembled 😁

I've got the 10 seater Series 3, with the same 2.25 litre engine lol. The SWB probably doesn't need a conversion, unlike the fuel sucking gluttony of the 2 ton 10 seater!

Using a powerful motor on higher gears isn't good as the gears get smaller and weaker, always use yellow metal oil in a landrover box

I've a Series IIA that's been sat in my parking area since 2000. I got pissed off with fixing niggling bits, and when the new clutch master cylinder went and I was miles away from anywhere, I had enough. Double-declutching through city traffic is a bitch. Anyhow, thanks to your channel and Electric Classic Car's Yt, I'm seriously on course to clean it up and go EV on it.

These are a really cheap vinyl that came with the car when we bought it. I don’t think anyone would make it anymore. I really like the color though and they look good in video. Not so much in real life
