Thank you Dee1 for putting this video out there! I have only seen two content creators that expressed understanding J. Cole's position and respecting it. This needs to be talked about in the communities in the right way. 2024 is our year to hold people accountable

it was 100% friendly. The problem with our community is…we can’t identify healthy competition. We think it’s going to end in violence To be the best you can be, you need a sparing partner ( Goku and vegeta type ish) The ego in check isn’t a bad thing, when we allow the ego to devour our consciousness then there’s a problem Joyner Lucas and Tory lanes went back and fourth made disses then called each other and laughed about it..a week later they made a song together If anything, Cole missed a huge mark, they woulda dissed each other, laughed about it then went on tour together…. Would of showed the youth, you can have fun with this

I think most people's problem wasn't the apology. It WAS the ego throughout his songs. Claiming he was the best, how he would take on all challenges, and how he was Ali. Then, when the heat was on, he back peddled. I agree that you apologize when you're wrong. But being a man is also standing on your square and having your word be your bond. Hopefully, this was a learning lesson to him and all spectators.

I haven't watched this video yet. But, I think this is where hip hop fans have to note and distinguish the difference between this genre and others, plus real life and the sport. We tend to look at this like it's WWE, but it's real life. Part of hip Hop has always been the battle, whether there's personal feelings involved or not. Two turntables and a mic; two emcees verbally battling to see who is the best. Somewhere along the way, battles got extremely personal, if not in the history, in the language. But either way, whether in a battle or not, rapper spend a lot of time talking about how they're the best rapper, because that's part of the culture. However, Kendrick and Cole have some history, of being cool, and I'm going at each other as lyricist. With all that being said, take what Cole exactly said, was that the whole thing felt lame and corny. Why is that? He said he doesn't feel any kind of way about Kendrick. When the diss dropped, he said his phone was blowing up with people telling him how HE should respond. But, he apparently didn't feel a way that matches Kendrick's energy and it affected his spirit. To go ahead and drop another bomb out of pride and peer pressure obviously would have been wrong, for him and in the context of being a human being. If there's real beef, drop it. If you're feeling like it's just sport and you're down, drop it. But, if something feels wrong and it's really bothering you, to go just because people are going to look at you weird is childish and like he said, "lame and corny." I agree that he says a lot of stuff about being the best and going at dudes. That's hip hop. I think this is a more personal situation. I don't think this means he won't battle ANYONE and he's ducking ALL smoke. And, even if he is, it doesn't mean that he's not a dope lyricist. We all KNOW he is. People need to stop acting like these celebrities owe us proving their stripes. Its not that big of a deal in the grand scheme. Get this worked up about your communities. Or poverty. Or war. Or God.

I love you brother and the reality is you compete using your art everyday. you compete not only with your mainstream peers but those within your own category such as Lecrae NF Brian Trejo and many others. you all have a similar and necessary message but there's always the option of who to choose to listen to, then there's also your mainstream Piers some of whom you have mentioned in interviews recently. You all contribute to the culture of Hip Hop. A lot of messages within the mainstream are more negative than positive which you raise awareness of every day. your song lines drawn is a perfect example of competing against the negativity of the industry, and asking like-minded individuals to stand with you in promoting positivity within the Hip Hop culture. unfortunately as long as there is money to be made from it there will always be someone willing to make delicious poison that you bravely compete against every day in order to promote a necessary positive message, with that being said I have a lot of respect for your perspective.

Really appreciate you being obedient to your purpose in this space. Your voice is very necessary. You've given the only uncompromisingly positive take I've seen on this issue. Everyone else is either toxically promoting unnecessary conflict or talking out of both sides of their face. What alot of us don't realize is that the toxicity in the black community is borne from generational trauma that manifests itself in different ways. In this case, as an oppressed people, we often live vicariously through the conflict of others. Seeing a dominant black man makes us feel more dominant, we get to identify as a victor because our guy won. That would be fine if it was just normal competition but we make it toxic by pushing these two great artist to see who can be the most disrespectful to the other. Like you said Dee-1, HipHop is ART not a competition! Life and death flow from the tongue, so in a lot of ways, disrespect is one of the worst things you can do to another person. Its not a game. Think about it, two heavyweight boxers beat other within an inch of their life, and most of the time, what do they do afterwards? Touch gloves, show respect. Respect is not a game. As black people, we have to learn to compete and uplift at the same time. Thank you again Dee-1 for creating space for real talk. 🙏🏾

Dee 1 first of all you my boi and I love your heart brother. Listen, J Cole is my all time favorite rapper, hands down. There was even apart of me that was disappointed because I believe J Cole is the incredible hulk of hip hop. He just chooses to suppress the beast we fans all know is in there, but we benefit from Bruce Banner’s brilliance. Sometimes we just want to see the beast come out especially when it seems “warranted”. But the reality is, as a Christian, we should be praying that the culture of hiphop changes to a message of positivity and we put all the aggression against the toxic, shallow trends and develop a new normal. A new kind of competitive edge that doesn’t involving DISSING each other. We praise Chaos and condemn Peace, and it shows every time someone tries to go against the rotten grain of hiphop.

I mean what happened w/ Tupac and Biggie was just traumatizing, as well as the more recent drill rapper deaths. Agreed AND disagreed, but mostly agreed; I believe rap is both an art and a sport and think that's part of the beauty of it! Competition is healthy as long as it's kept FRIENDLY, but you are right though; what we want to see (especially battle rap fans) is them go 3 rounds and then do a show together or something, but that might not have been what actually happened. It could've gone on forever and there's always that chance that it could turn into REAL animosity, which we DEFINITELY don't want. It's always good to hear your perspective big bro! Major respect and salutes to Dee-1 for giving the people this angle of the situation at a time when most people won't. People forget that they themselves are not perfect and our humanly nature provokes us at times to act out of character and make mistakes. There's no bigger form of being the bigger person than apologizing. Cole is talented enough to the point where he has no reason to back down yet he still did. That's honorable. There's perfection in owning up to your own imperfections. This new culture praises clout, drama and clickbait as the new acceptable/respectable social norm. The phrase that I love to hear now a days is "DO BETTER!". J.Cole's decision to apologize is an exceptional example of our people doing better. I love a good hip hop [LYRICAL] match of wits like anybody else.... but not at the expense of death or even worse, the encouragement of violence that ultimately influences the younger generation who may not understand that it's nothing more than lyrics and art and doesn't need to go beyond that. My career allows me to see both angles... the "Thug" before the crime and the reformed man after he's done time in prison for being todays version of "real". They ALWAYS have regrets.

When I heard what happened I was shocked! This is BIG taking accountability for a mistake? In my mind I felt like the masses need this. If they follow artists to their own demise they can feel confident in recognizing and rectifying our wrongs. Everyone supportive until theirs in the dirt. Summed up, it's just that easy. Life matters lets live like it.

J. Cole apologized because he’s a grown ass man and Kendrick Lamar is a grown ass man and even though they’re both in the music industry and the music industry is perceived to be a competitive art, the art of making music is a personal expression and not a competitive sport. Society tends to take an “innocent fun” thing to do as a competitive “I’m better than you” thing to do. Everything in life is not a competition. Of course with dealing with reality there will be some that are better than others but that’s just a template or blueprint for how to do better rather than how to be better. The whole idea of life is to be the best version of yourself. Not to be the best version of someone else’s life. The mindset of society is fucked up because everyone is tryna outdo the next person when the only thing we are made to overcome is evil. There’s so much more to say but we as a people, especially as a “people of color” we should congratulate J. Cole for taking the high road to apologize for downing someone’s art or artwork when they’re both in the same field of study/art trying to create the best art that they can create. Unfortunately societies minds have been brainwashed and manipulated to believe that everything in life is a competition. That’s why we’re on this life long treadmill of hatred going nowhere fast because we’re too lazy and ignorant to see the bigger picture. Remember how we got her in the first place. DIVIDE AND CONQUER. Now answer the question, who divided and conquered throughout history? Was it a person? Or a spirit? Life is about Good (God) VS Evil (Devil). Once we recognize that’s it’s not even about the color of our skin when we really dig deep down into it. It’s about the spirit that a person possesses. Cast out the evil spirit of competitiveness and replace it with a spirit of love and compassion and watch how far this world can go. - JONES
