Did you know that there is a Japanese term for “hair harassment”? It’s called "Kami Harasumento" and Japanese men who are bald or have thinning hair often find themselves the butt of jokes in the workplace. We recently conducted a street interview in Korea about the same topic, and were fascinated by the local insight. Check it out here if you haven't already ► • What’s It Like Being B...
This time, we are going to hit the streets of Tokyo to find out how Japanese people feel about bald people.
0:00 - Intro
0:34 - How often do you see bald people in Japan?
1:27 - Impressions of bald people
3:18 - Why does Japanese society perceive bald people this way?
6:05 - Are you scared at the thought of going bald?
9:11 - Dating life as a bald person
11:18 - Can Japan's perception towards bald people change in the future?

I think most countries look down on baldness to some level. However, in a lot of those other countries, you can turn it around and make yourself look more masculine and confident. I'm not too sure how Japanese would handle it though. Being a comedian and the butt of a joke doesn't seem the way in my opinion.

And here’s the kicker: At the same time, many Japanese (women) associate beards with a “lack of hygiene”. The reason that the image of Mr. Clean is bald is to reinforce the cleanliness aspect, for example.

I don't think the word "clean" is translated properly here for non-japanese people. The comments about balding men being depicted as "not clean" translates better to "unkempt or not properly groomed" imo. The biggest problem imo is the associations with balding men in japan. There's this stereotype of a drunk middle aged salaryman (office worker), who looks unkempt (hair messy, tie untied, top buttons undone) who smells (smokes, drinks, bad teeth), has a pot belly and is partially balding and often trying to cover it up with a comb over.

I think it's really interesting that Japanese people blame lack of nutrition for balding, and that's why they think it's more common for poor people to be bald. I haven't heard of that before. I've always heard that baldness had to do with genetics. So I wonder if it's just that wealthier Japanese people are able to pay for different treatments to replace their hair or hide their hair loss.

People always keep looking for someone to belittle in order to make themselves feel big. A basic foundation of every society is the exclusion of people who are different, because it defines what makes someone a full member of that society and what doesn’t. And since personality and skills are generally hard to measure, people tend to look at something simpler - appearance.

But he loved them so much as his own kids, and he didn't need to but he step up as a father figure they needed. And my kiddos love him for that...." And it's true, I always encourage him to be an amazing person no matter what happens. Whatever people say, it's basically they are shock and/or trying to make you uncomfortable. In the Afican American community it is/was not uncommon to see bald headed men. In many instances these men had a head full of hair and they kept their hair shaved/bald during the summer months to keep cool, or just prefered a bald head. There was no stigma attached in any way, shape or form and it was not uncommon for African American women to have a preference for a bald headed man :). Fast forward to 2022 and due to the pandemic, or other reasons I see so many men of different races and ages wearing bald heads, and I gotta say they look fantastic! Whilst I prefer a full head of hair, what looks worse is greasy combover bits, if you are going bald I think it's better just to rock that rather than cling to hair hope lol. A little bit of generalization: manual workers go bald, office workers wear wigs or cosmetic products to hide it. And while office workers are forced to look clean for the job, manual workers often tend to look more natural and compfy, as they lack contact with clients or their job would make them dirty anyway, so dressing up beyond certain level makes no sense. They arent "dirty", but they are more often then not, clothed more casually and not like models from fashion magazines.

I really dont understand why they percieve being bald negative, considering historical hairstyles in Japan as little as 150 years ago, where they were shaving half of their head or even fully in case of buddhist priests and it was a status symbol. Just how did it change so much i such a short time.

I love how the one guy used the One Piece reference lol I'm from the states and many, many guys, even some women have thinning hair. Over here being bald became more of a style of acceptance, rather than the old days of wigs, comb overs, and brutally painful hair implants.

It's like enjoy it while you have it. Otherwise I personally think it's sexy for relatively young men to have bold heads. I'm 76 now but had a good set of hair till like 3yrs ago but had cancer treatment and with that hair became so thin and lost almost all on the top although can't see it myself from the front. I tried to shave it all but then you'd have to do it constantly or it will look unkept so decided to keep some length. I bet I look hideous but could care or less at this point.

I don't care whether someones balding cuz it's natural, but it definitely doesn't usually look great compared to other stuff. When people shave on purpose for a clean hygienic look tho, or maybe the bald head/beard techno/tech look, those are styles more than balding. I like when people make it work for them, make it a style that accents their personality/masculinity/clothes/etc, all that definitely helps the issue vs like...Danny Devito in S9 of Always Sunny In Philadelphia crazy bald guy look lol

Interesting to hear what they said and felt about this! I believe balding in your older years is fine but I can understand if your younger and balding it can be real detrimental to your self esteem. And when people tease you about it makes it even worst. I agree with the guy that our diet can be the factor to why guys are balding and balding in their early years. It would be good to get your daily nutrients in and try to eat most of your meals clean I guess. And try nofap as well because ejaculating constantly rids your body of it’s vital nutrients

Neither of those things are correct. If you are not starving, food has nothing to do with it. And health professionals say everyone should masturbate regularly for health reasons. For men especially it prevents prostate cancer, but it is healthy for both genders. (If you have sex regularly it's not needed).

@@TheDaglers there’s many different factors to hair lost and diets is definitely one of them. You don’t have to have a super strict clean diet but if you aren’t at least getting your nutrients in not only will your hair start to feel it also your body
