Rich people can save money. Because they have money. 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. This means we either live based on the check we earn weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. So we budget things to last for that duration. We don't get the luxury of saving. Now, saving money, trying not to use electricity more than needed, be careful about what we spend to eat...yes, we save. We try too anyway. Some are better than others. But most of us carry $5,000-50,000 in debt, not including a mortgage. Because we don't earn enough to not carry a lot of debts.

@@WolfsDE The problem is most of you live too expensive. Why have a house when a smaller apartment would do and would be cheaper? Instead of cooking at home, you eat out and you eat waaay too much (look at the high obesity rate in the USA). Instead of using a cheap phone (ie. Nokia 40$) you have a 1000$ iPhone with expensive subscription plan. Stop buying stuff you can't afford and particularly stuff you don't need. Use condoms and don't get kids if you can't afford it. There are many more examples. Rich people didn't just become rich, they worked hard and managed their money well, despite paying significantly higher taxes. Everyone in the USA has the chance to make a decent living, all you need is work hard & faithfully and manage your money properly. But most of you can't and instead of recognizing that it is your own god damn fault, you blame people that are more successful than you.

When I visited Tokyo, I had just finished lunch and it had started to drizzle a little bit. So I'm standing at the crosswalk waiting for the light, everyone's got their umbrellas out, and this nice old man looks over at me and just scoots over a few steps to share his umbrella for a few moments as we wait and cross the street together. I gave him my best "arigato gozaimasu!" and he smiled and we parted ways, but it really left an impression on me. Then I spent like 3 hours wandering around Akihabara trying to find the Eorzea cafe like a total otaku.

I'm guessing we have brightly colored icing here in America because: 1. It attracts children 2. It's festive. Cake is for parties. 3. Generally, we know exactly what the icing tastes like. It's all the same with most big stores so all you have to do is choose what color you want.

Some of my favorite things are from Japan: Shabu-Shabu, Band-Maid, my AE86 Corolla (I wish I still had it), Yokogawa test tools, 5S (some people hate this, I know), the shamisen and great music. The creativity, care and elegance in the art they create makes them very cool!

It was funny because when I was an exchange student in Japan everyone thought I was from India due to my brown skin color. I kept having to tell people that there are many Americans who are naturally brown like me. 😂

About counselling, I was shocked when a friend of mine (who’s also from Québec) living in Japan for 8 years had a hard time to find a professional so he could deal with his problems. The only people he found prescribed him hard anti-depressants... he really just needed someone to talk to and uncoil his issues. I’m glad it’s getting more common. Psychotherapy is so good for you.

That's so funny about the umbrellas. If somebody forgets their umbrella and gets wet, we see it more like "Oh, you are very tough. Even though you forgot your umbrella today, you still pushed through and came to meet with us because you considered us more important than your own comfort." I don't know why, but seeing someone willing to suffer a hardship for our sake sort of makes us feel like we're more important to them and therefore we can trust them.

I live in Florida “The Sunshine State” where it ironically rains almost every single day, so if it’s just sprinkling I won’t use an umbrella, but I always have one ready just in case the bipolar weather of Florida decides it wants to suddenly have monsoon level rains, the rain here is so bad that it actually floods here frequently, so I guess it surprises me that other Americans wouldn’t have a umbrella always ready, at the very least keep one in there car just in case.

I live in FL too. If it rains I just run to the car. If its pouring down too hard I just wait a few minutes until it slows down before making a run for it. Japanese people walk more so I imagine they need to keep prepared against the weather more

Yea. I live in the netherlands. Fun fact: weather predictions are almost NEVER accurate. We might have umbrellas in our cars but many children, teens, young adults will never have one with them because they take up much space in a schoolbag that already gives you a spontaneous hernia, and most people use a bicycle so an umbrella really does not help. Hoods are a lot easier. It also usually rains... or you have a sudden 20°C temperature difference in 3 days, even if it never hits 30°C often.. not even in summer.

I'm surprised and very happy that Japanese people seem to be as interested in Americans as Americans are in Japanese! When it comes to saving money, I think that really just depends on what your parents teach you as you grow up. My mom was always strict with me about saving my money, so for the first couple of years that I was living alone I of course spent it all haha. But now I think I'm pretty good at saving and I owe it to my mama!

Quite true. In America we have an abundance of both penny pinchers and people who see a credit limit as a goal to reach. Along with the huge range between the 2 extremes.

It depends on the city, area, job, culture, etc. The more vain a person is (which is the current trend,) the less their savings are. I think that a study showed that the avg savings for a 30 year old is around 30k (3 million yen), which isn't even close to adequate imho. Considering the health system, if you're not paying insurance that 30k might disappear in a moment. Some people live paycheck to paycheck (Even if they earn 80k a year)

@@tigeruntamed6036 They tend to be less dense. That is to say, most pastry in Japan is lighter and airer than you would expect as an American. I've eaten single cupcakes in the US that have filled me up like a full meal almost, due to be so heavy and dense. Also, although you can certainly find plenty of chocolate and custard and various cream fillings, the most common filling for sweets here is sweetened red bean paste.

That's rough. I hope you get an opportunity to escape. Vermont's not bad, today at least, but housing cost near the populous areas has gone nuts since so many are moving into the state. Also, no place to go crabbing. (fresh Maryland crab is the best!)

In America, most of us are in debt (just like our governent). That's why on TV we make a sensation out of those extreme penny-pinchers who don't buy toilet paper. I guess in a sense, it makes us feel OK with being in debt when we see others going to extreme lengths to avoid it. "I may be in debt, but at least I'm normal, unlike that extreme saver on TV!" I've learned that being in debt makes me more apt to spend money, whereas having no debt makes me want to spend less.

Lol, my family calls me a "penny pincher" because I hard-core save money and make budgets all the time. When I was a kid, I used to put all my coins in a literal piggy bank to try and save up for a trip to Disneyland. When we finally went, I was allowed to use my savings (it ended up being like $400 from years of saving) to buy what I wanted there--snacks, souvenirs, etc. And while there I kept counting my money over and over and weighing the value of everything I bought because I only have a certain amount. I was proud to have extra money at the end of the trip to buy a knock-off American Girl doll from Toys R Us afterwards. In college, I figured out quick that making homemade meals was far cheaper than going out, and would make a budget. Once, I was choosing between whether I wanted to buy a cute shirt and have less grocery money, or pass up the shirt---because I refused to go over my budget. I think you have both types in America, though. The ones that save for big things or emergencies, and the ones that spend for smaller things and use credit (and many in-between).

I wasn’t expecting such a positive response. I guess it’s because I’m used to be told how awful America is by Europeans who don’t live here lol. I shouldn’t have assumed Japanese would think the same way. This video makes me love Japan even more. I hope to go there one day. I started learning Japanese a few weeks ago.

As a european...... I’m not saying europe is better and would not recommend my country, but europe is better... atleast in healthcare... if you’re lucky. Also, is it true passports costs a lot in the us? Bcs I can’t imagine it being more thsn €100... and that’s for 10 years... (kids are usually cheaper as they need a new one every 5 years)

@@MoonieLovegood It’s not good to compare a country with 328m people with countries that have 60m people or less. It’s much easier to handle issues in small countries like Finland, Sweden and Poland than the US.

Like don’t get me wrong we’re doing pretty well here but the people straight up ignore laws because there is only police active in the bigger cities. The politics atm are a mess... like a REAL mess. The woman in that video is from a tv show called Extreme Cheapskates. It's a crazy show that features people who use very extreme ways to save money. That woman also took (and ate) food from garbage cans at grocery stores, and did not own a bed. She slept on gym mats she got from the garbage of a school!! 😣

@@MrsEats I see this comment so I’m gonna share something about saving money I am given a monthly allowance of 15 dollars. Each time I buy something I have a limit unless tax takes up the amount. If I were to buy something that was 7 dollars I would have to wait to get double the amount, so if I get 14 dollars from doing my chores or whatever I’ll allow myself to go buy something again Some people spend more than 100 dollars a week. Some people are bougie ig 🙄🤚

I have about 44k in the bank now after saving for about 6 years or so. I live in a very modest duplex and only spend on what I need. I've been dirt poor and the thought of being like that again scares the crap outta me lol.

Quite right. A lot of people who grew up with less than others can become good at saving when they start earning. On the other hand, some people who grew up with less think that they have to catch up with what they missed out on, and then they spend every dollar that they earn. Scary. Keep saving, DooM Guy 83. I keep thinking that they will cut social security by the time we retire. I recommend that everyone fund their own retirement, because I don't view the government as being as reliable as we would like it to be.

Excellent goal. Working past 60 years old doesn't appeal to me. With terrible inflation I might still work part time. I try to encourage the young workers at the job site to save money early. I still have perhaps almost two more decades left in the work force, before I want to retire. But time will tell. Back up plan with a back up plan. But save, save, save money.

For personal finance there is offense (income), and defense (good spending/saving habits). In America there's one set of people who work 40 hours a week, but don't have enough offense to really credibly save money. They might live in a household with others to save on rent, live in a city where there are good wages and some real competition for labor, and still struggle to make rent, utilities, groceries, and have enough money to save 10% of their take home pay. This is a huge group, and part of why minimum wage is a hot issue (especially because programs intended to help needy people might really be helping megacorporations pay less wages instead of really improving the available money for people with the least money, so this change might shift the burden on exploitative corporations instead of taxpayers). For another set with more income, there is a weird pressure some people feel to live a certain lifestyle. Like maybe an IT professional with a mid-career job feels they should be able to afford a home, but if you move often (somewhat common in IT depending on specific role) owning a home isn't automatically a good financial move like it was for our parents or maybe their parents (due to transaction costs and how mortgages are "structured"). There are lots of traps and not many people really understand how to make their money go further when they can finally afford to save (like paying insurance 6 months at a time instead of every month). We say "It is expensive to be poor" because these little advantages are out of reach for people with the lowest incomes.

This is what I came here to say. It isn't as simple as "Americans are good at saving" or "Americans are bad at saving." Our national minimum wage is actually fairly similar to Japan's, but the average rent in the United States is 50% higher than in Japan (which isn't cheap). (The percentage difference varies between city center and outside city center.) Broadband internet costs 25% more. The interest rate on a mortgage is 2x that of Japan. Yes, lots of things like fresh produce are more expensive in Japan, but some of a U.S. citizen's biggest expenses may be bigger. Inflation on consumer prices is 2x that of Japan. The unemployment rate is 84% higher than in Japan. Last I heard, the United States has more millionaires and billionaires than any other country, and yet studies show that a majority of Americans can't come up with a few hundred dollars in case of an emergency. From what I'm seeing, truth be told, Japan and the United States both have a lot of issues with high costs of living coupled with incomes that aren't great and a lack of labor protections.

@@SpekkioMofW Yes, the labor unions have lost a lot of power and influence. It is not as advantageous to join them now as it would be to have retired from them 20 years ago. Private sector pensions are being replaced with 401Ks. It isn't getting any easier out there.

Not all Americans live that way. I started with nothing. Study hard, got into state college, got a good job. Made good money, buy real estate. Sell real estate, buy more, sell more, retire at 55 with nice pension. Enjoying my retirement with Money to spare.

It's very cool to hear Japanese like Americans. Many Americans also think Japanese are very cool 😎 We have colorful cakes for special occasions just because they are pretty, bright, special, fun :) For someone's birthday, It's common to have a special cake made for that person in their favorite colors and even with special themes. Example, my sister's birthday is in the fall and I had a sunflower (🌻) cake made for her because those flowers are associated with the fall and are her favorite flowers. The idea is to make birthday cakes very memorable and fun to make the day special. 😄

Saving kind of depends on the family honestly, my family grew up not having a lot of money, so we always tried to save. Rich people might spend more, but there's also rich people that like to save as much as possible. So, I would say it depends on the family/habits the parents taught them.

My friend in Japan thought Beyonce and I loved tanning. I had to send him a bunch of stuff telling him not everyone in the world is white. I do the same thing with food. Lmao, i try my hardest to save money. I work for a store that uses. Natural food coloring like turmeric, beets and some flowers =)

His name is Jero and he was very popular too. Now, there is a young comedian named Ike Nwala. He is very funny and his Japanese is so good!

He was in no way insulting her and loves her skin tone for the record. There are differences between racism and ignorant shelterd people in other Countries, as well as what ever Country you reside in and the Country I reside in. There is racism, xenophobia, nazis etc EVERYWHERE. but there are people willing to learn about others. (As an American) I think Americans are good at saving money in the short term. We do tend to be thrifty and value savings on things we buy, or getting the most out of the products we have already bought, but we are not good at saving in the long term. A lot of people I know (at least younger people) don’t have savings accounts, or barely have anything in their savings. There is a huge wealth gap in the U.S. and most Americans live in debt.

Almost EVERYONE throws cigarettes out of their car window, garbage workers don't care about what falls out while loading bins, and public garbage bins are always completely stuffed so there's no place to put trash except on the ground.

@@James_Baggott The problem is many layers deep. You can't really blame it on one or two things. It's probably 20 or 30 things. So it's just a compound problem. As far as immigration goes: just take a look at those countries where the immigrants come from. Are they nice and CLEAN? Japan understands this, and they don't want their country ruined. They are a "collective" culture. They care about their heritage, their people, and their homeland. They don't want to wreck their own homeland. Which is smart. The bad side of Japan is: they work themselves to death. They have high standards, but that comes with a price. Pressure, and longer hours at the job. No place on Earth is "paradise". But some places are certainly worse than others.

This is really interesting, because based only on personal experience, I would say that Americans as a group are reasonably terrible at saving money (though some of our jobs make saving for retirement easier). Also, a lot of images that we get of "Japan" are often from what I assume is Tokyo, and it seems like everything is extremely bright and colorful, including food. We basically seem to think Japanese people either live in the future with robot hotels and Hello Kitty everywhere, or, when we see imagery from temples or cultural ceremonies, like the Japanese as a whole, outside of major cities, live like it's the 1700s. It's not a very cohesive image of Japanese life, and is often inspired by anime or outlandish depictions shown in Western media. Love you and your channel!

As an American, I am horrid at saving money. I always envied my Japanese Grandmother for her ability to save money. When she passed we found so much money hidden away. We knew she had some money but had no idea she had had that much.

We don't carry umbrellas because we usually drive everywhere, and it's only exposed to rain for a short while. If it's a heavy rain, we usually just don't go out if we can avoid it, or use an umbrella

It depends on the person when it comes to saving. My parents raised me to always have emergency money. So it has turned into a habit were I store away money.

The silent generation are/were incredibly adept at saving money due to living through the great depression, baby boomers tend to have more lavish lifestyles due to the abundance of wealth during their formational years, generation X seems to be more mixed due to the economic inequality during the eighties, and millennials tend to be a bit more frugal due to the 2008 economic recession happening while many of them were on the cusp of adulthood. I hope this was somewhat helpful.

After my great grandmother and great aunt passed away, my parents and grandparents had to clean out their house to sell it. They'd lived through the Depression (Greatest Generation, I think?) and were obviously traumatized by it. They washed and stored the styrofoam trays that meat comes on. They stocked up on goods like toilet paper. They didn't trust banks, so a substantial amount of cash was found hidden inside clothing and literally taped to the closet walls.

Second, I live I western Washington where it rains all the time. We are used to it. If we see someone with an umbrella, we know they are from out of town. If you really don't know what to do, cheap italians go repair their teeth in Croatia, and the service is good. I guess you could go there. With a super cheap fly is shouldn't cost that much. You'd probably be better going to Mexico or Canada, thou Note: you're probably going to do the quarantine, if you do travel to Europe

@@VVV.12345 idk if it’s just my area, but in the US flying is extremely expensive. Going out of the country is even more so. Getting a passport alone can cost hundreds of dollars. Plus the flight itself costs hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars. Most people don’t travel, if they do they drive places, like a 10 hour car ride is what my sister does to go to school. If someone doesn’t have money for medical care they definitely don’t have money for the luxury of flying. There is no dental care in the US it’s all out of pocket. Even with health insurance most people simply do not go to the doctor because they cannot afford it, me included. You go for one small thing and then the bill comes in the mail and you find out you’re charged hundreds of dollars. Living with medical conditions is a huge financial burden

If you can't afford dental or medical work, reach out to a university in your area. Many times you can get work done for free or at a discount. Usually by interns and students supervised by a certified doctor/dentist as part of their training.

@@Jenny-tm3cm What part of the U.S. you live at if I may ask? There are plenty of Americans who travel both domestically and internationally. Unless you are flying First Class you can find very affordable rates to travel. It depends on which airline. Since the output of the vaccine rates are starting to go back up. You can get dental care and health insurance through your employer or government assistance programs. You just go to the dentist that is available under that dental plan. You have colleges that offers students health coverage too. My point is there is healthcare that is available to everyone. Its just a matter of does it offer what you need and is it fully covered. If not, you just find another health plan that is located in your state. Majority of high costs is in hospital stays. Problem in the U.S. right now is the high unemployment and many people are finding it hard to meet their daily needs.

American here - to me umbrellas are very bulky and usually get in the way. I don't like holding up a line of people who are also in the rain while I collapse my umbrella to go in somewhere. If I know its going to rain I will bring an umbrella, but depending on context I may not use it.

I loved the money saving part, that was adorable. The snack shop scenario is how it was when I was a kid going to the corner store after school wondering what to get to eat. You had the .25cent little fruit drinks, gum, and small bag of chips. But then the bigger bags of chips were .50cents, and if you had a dollar you could prioritize what you want more of to work within a dollar budget.

Yes. A lot of our healthcare isn't covered by insurance. Basic life savi ng things. 1 year of my Mom's Cancer treatment? 7013056.00¥ Injectable insulin for many is still 76703.90¥. My rescue Inhaler? 7560.81¥. And we have insurance. My parents are in Millions of dollars of medical debt, and I barely manage to keep up with my breathing meds. It's nuts.

I live in the Pacific Northwest of America and it rains quite a bit, but here having an umbrella is still not common because we tend to just wear a rain jacket or a hat. There’s still some umbrellas, but few and far between. I have one for when I take my dog out to go to the bathroom, but that’s because it’s just in the front yard.

I think as far as saving money, it depends on how you are brought up. My family didn't do allowances but if we wanted something we had to do house chores to get money. Then it was up to us to determine if we wanted to spend it on candy or toys or whatever.

Its funny because I have heard the hydroxyapatite in some Japanese toothpastes makes teeth more healthy (but not whiter). I’ve considered ordering some though its pricey to have shipped. We keep teeth white with a combination of at home whitening kits and paying the dentist for whitening.

I started using Apagard toothpaste from Japan about 3 years ago, and it works better than the high-fluoride prescription toothpaste the dentist prescribed to me. It’s definitely expensive, but it’s still a lot cheaper than dental work.

having watch several videos of this nature, it seems more like most Japanese people don't know shit about America. but i think a big part of that is that America is sooo much bigger than Japan and has many different cultures and customs within America depending on where you live. so there really isn't a "one answer fits all" for most questions
