Hey Erich I came over here to revisit this video as sort of a refresher after going thru my guitar papers from the last few years and as I'm sitting there I'm thinking to myself man I totally gotta write a note to this guy letting him know how much I appreciate not only everything he did for us subscribers during the pandemic shutdown showing up to teach people live for an hour or more for 30 days straight in April of 2020 which in itself was pretty damn special and generous but also just for being such a wonderful guitar teacher in general over the years to the point that whatever journey guitar playing takes me on you will be forever built into my foundation for not only playing but also for my love and enthusiasm for the instrument which you always demonstrated so superbly. Looks like this video is 2 years old so I don't even know if you're going to be seeing this anytime soon but hopefully you'll one day come around to it and feel the appreciation. Stay blessed my good man, and thank you. Peace🤙🏼

Where do you find chord families that give keys? Why does making a Dm make it key of C? But D major makes key of G? What makes it G major or Gminor when your playing GCD?

Here's what I do-see if you like this idea. Pick the A string and while listening to the song, starting at the first fret, work your way up until you find a pitch that feels like it works. Then, starting with this fret, skip a fret (whole step) and pick that tone, if this seems to work, then pick the very next fret (half-step) and see if this works too. If they all work then likely the key is 2 frets BEFORE the first tone that matched. So if the first match was D at the 5th fret, then the key is C. How this works-We are picking a pattern that corresponds to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th degrees of the scale. This is a unique pattern that does not repeat in any other key, except the possibility exists that what you have identified is the 6th, 7th, and 8th of a key, so in this case the key would be the 4th degree pitch we identified above. To verify your choice is correct play the major scale based on what you identified and see if it works. It probably will, and you are on your way.

But, G C and D appear in the Em key as well. How can you tell if you’re in key of G or E??

E minor is not E(major). E minor and G major or relative equivalents. Search, “yourguitarsage relative major”. 👍

It's really not that hard. Once you start practicing to play cover songs you will start to recognize chord progression patterns and be able to pick it up by ear.

Try learning to hear the sound of 4 to 5 resolving to 1. So for example in the key of G that would be C to D then resolving to G, then try to hear that with all keys. If you're playing 6th and 5th string root barre chords 1 - 4 - 5 kinda makes the shape of a knight move in chess, that's how I remember it.
@stricknine8623
@stricknine8623 4 жыл бұрын
@@RussellSyx I've been playing for 35 years and I've never thought about a G, C, D or C, D, G as anything other than 3 chords with an opportunity to embellish, phrase and time them in many different ways. In other words, if I'm not covering someone's tune, I am making up my own thing from the entire library of chords available. Just learn them all, or most of them and when inspired, put them together until something sounds right or matches the music playing in your head. But many of my fellow musicians think in terms more associated with theory and I'm not knocking that at all.

YourGuitarSage What don't you understand? If for example you look at the beginning of the song and the end of the song you might completely miss whatever number of key changes in between that happen within the song. Because not every song is in one key only. So once you think you have established the key you will have to look at the whole progression to see if the key is consistently the same. For example a seven chord can be used as a junction to change keys. You might use it as the fifth in one key and the one in the next.

@@wijk89 you're not wrong but it is pretty clear he is assuming one key for these guidelines. Pretty good place to start and anyway, relatively few songs have key changes. Very helpful and valuable tips in this video when you keep that simple and reasonable assumption in mind.
@wijk89
@wijk89 4 жыл бұрын
@@mcvicardotneil That assumption is a start. However whether or not key changes are common or not and what a key change actually is, seems to be a matter of opinion. You might for example use the minor chords from a key in the verse and change to the major chords from that key in the chorus. Maybe you don't consider that a key change so much, but the tonal centre will change. I think it would have been a good idea to at least hint at the possibility that there might be a key change within the song. To save beginning guitarists from frustration when the key they thought the song was in all of a sudden doesn't work anymore. www.secretsofsongwriting.com/2016/01/27/how-common-are-key-changes-in-songs/
