Width, weight, compound and tread, there's an almost endless array of tyre options from an increasing number of reputable tyre manufacturers. In this video, we use our tyre sponsor, Maxxis, as an example to demonstrate just how much difference the rubber you choose makes when it comes to a timed downhill run.

Come on guys. You can't make any conclusions on the basis of 1 to 3 seconds time difference. You would have had a similar variation in time if you had done 3 runs on the same tyres!!

On my EMTB I'm using the Maxxis Minion DHF (2.5 at the rear!) and the DHRII (2.4 at the front) in summer in mostly dry conditions (hard pack or soft over hard). In winter (or lets say when it gets a little muddier) I switch to Schwalbe Eddy Current (2.6 soft rear) and Magic Mary (2.6 soft front), which is a great combo in tricky conditions. Great vid! Thank you.

Nice to see some content about every day issues. I've only had 3 sets of tyres so a far 1 year emtbing. The difference in each one is massive. Now it's winter I think I'm going to change for some mm soft dh.

I just want a strong, durable tyre that can handle a mixture of tarmac, gravel and hardpack without causing too much drain on the battery.

That last bit about picking DD is where I’d love the conversation to start. It appears that ebikes with their added weight and abilities suggest perhaps for most that tires that have best traction, braking, puncture resistance, regardless of nominal rolling speed and some added battery drain would be best? I’m leaning towards Front: assegai DD maxxgrip Rear: DHR DD maxxterra Slightly harder compound on rear for wear. This way I can plow up and down over most anything, have great cornering and braking, with just a little added battery drain. Thou may go with less grippy, slightly faster aggressor on rear for more playful DH… Thoughts? Appreciate it!

@Alanvictoryoung 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting results Steve! You were noticeably less poppy and nimble with the DH casing on the end and seemly much more out of breath at the end. I was expecting the DH casing and MaxxGrip compound to take the fastest time too but it was the slowest!!! I have been running DD or DH casings MaxxGrip Assegai front and rear and love them. Cush core is too fussy for me but I do add Huck Norris in the back so I can use lower tire pressures and destroy my rim on landings. So far I have been favoring maximum grip for fun and speed on technical natural trails but a portion of my friends are still proponents of single ply hard compounds😱One buddy refuses to let me try his bike in fear of me Kerchunking his rear rim 😝. Range is reduced though. No scientific evidence but we think 10-15% less range with DH and MaxxGrip vs single and MaxxTerra.

Hello EMBN, I have a Specialized Vado 5.0 2022 version. I use it to do grocery deliveries. My problem is that I get too many punches. What kind of tyre do you recommend I use? I do not always use it on smooth surfaces, sometimes to get to the destination quickly I turn to go through parks, bushes etc. The bike I use is very powerful with a 90NM Toque so speed is not a problem. I just need a tyre that would get me to my destination quicker with fewer or no punchers. My current tyre setup: FRONT TYRE Pathfinder Sport Reflect, 650Bx2.3 REAR TYRE Pathfinder Sport Reflect, 650Bx2.3 Inner Tubes Schrader, 40mm valve

I'm quite a fan of both the Hutchinson Toro and Hutchinson DZO, but they do suffer from side wall bleeding when used tubeless. I also use WTB Vigilante tyres, but they can be a pain to get off and on when out and about. I also run Schwalbe Nobby Nics and Magic Mary tyres.

I appreciate your vids, but a 3s difference is not enough to make any determination with respect to speed. That’s within the noise. To many variables. Otherwise content of this video is excellent as usual.

Yea we think in many cases you can run a little bit more of an aggressive tyre as the added rolling resistance isn't going to affect you like it would on a standard mtb.

I don’t think that a tyre’s rolling resistance in regard to range is a consideration for most ebike riders as the duration of a typical ride is well within the capacity of an ebike battery. It would only be a consideration in regard to mega rides. I think that grip, puncture resistance and comfort are the main considerations in regard to tyre selection.

All a bit subjective innit? My KTM came with 2.35" Nobby Nics which here in the Highlands are a bit scary but they're about to be replaced with 2.6" Magic Mary Addix Sport Grip Gravity (blue stripe?) which looking at the DT Swiss site is about what I'm comfortable the rims can take... NN's are a good all rounder but not for natural trails here...

Conti/Schwalbe also make some great touring/commuter tyres. If you are running hybrid commuter tyres on a MTB make sure you check out what the maximum pressure for your rims are as the tyre max pressures may be higher and can cause cracks around the spoke nipples if inflated too high.

Few years ago, on non E-bikes, I used to put a wider tyre on the front with less pressure, for more grip in corners, and a narrower on the rear for better efficiency. Something like 2.35 front/2.10 rear. How come it's the opposite now ?
