Sana, of the K-pop idol group, TWICE, posted on Instagram with captions referring to the end of the “Heisei Era” and Emperor Akihito stepping down from his throne, and was criticized for being insensitive to Korean citizens given the historical conflict between Korea and Japan. But do Koreans actually care? We hit the streets of Seoul to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Korean population.

@@nika21212 it is not at all the same thing. You don't seem to understand japanese culture. The eras are a way of counting time passing, similar to how we celebrate new years. Sana's post was purely time related. Had nothing to do with the emperor

@@wiiboiwill You're not wrong, but for a point of clarification, since the era is taken from the emperor's reign name, and there aren't really any linguistic markers to differentiate which you're referring to, unless you understand the cultural context, you might make that misunderstanding.

@Chloe No, it has nothing to do with that. That’s the misconception of those of you who don’t understand Japanese and Japanese culture. If you live in Japan - inluding foreigners - when you go to the city office, for example, and asked about your birthday, you will reply in this format: ** . So, if you were born in 2000, you will reply: “Hesei 12”. Saying “Heisei 12” has nothing to do with the emperor. You will say it even if you are Korean, Chinese, or British. Now, what are you going to say to those Koreans who say “Heisei”? Are you going to criticize or bash them too?
@thebigitchy
@thebigitchy 5 жыл бұрын
@@nika21212 Yes, but it's not like the emperor really does anything in Japan other than attend state events. When Japanese people refer to being born in the Heisei era, it's almost like identifying yourself as Gen X or a Millennial. My impression is that many Japanese people don't consider the eras much more significantly than that. Sure, there was a lot of furor over what the new era name would be, but that's because it's a marker that will be ubiquitous in their lives for the next several decades, and not because they necessarily care about the person who will be occupying the position.

@@yswoo4438 But you need to look into how japanese people divide years and time. Japanese people use eras to differentiate generations and they also use eras when they fill out official paperwork. Sana wrote about it because she had been part of the Heisei generation = the younger generation, but she was feeling nostalgic as that generation was no longer the youngest generation as a new era was starting. Really disappointed that Asian Boss didn’t even bother getting an actual translator and doing their research before interviewing these people. As what others have said already: Sana was literally saying bye Heisei (era from 1989 to 2019) hello Reiwa (2019 - ). Heisei era has nothing to do with the colonial period and WWII. That’s the era she was born in and grew up with and now they are moving on to Reiwa and really it’s as simple as that. The reporter and the interviewees seem to be confused on when these eras end and begin. They might be lumping Heisei, Showa (1926-1989) and maybe even Taisho (1912-1926) eras as one. Hence their arguments. Not trying to minimize the issues surrounding colonialism or comfort women or the Japanese government just stating facts
@mariaakaannie6138

Yeah, I'm also kind of annoyed that there was not even a mention from the interviewer about how eras are used in japan. Japanese eras divide up the generations so Sana who was born in the Heisei era would have been part of the younger generation up until now, but with the era changing she is now no longer part of the younger generation so her post basically just means: "I feel old and nostalgic as I'm no longer part of the young generation".

bluewater Honestly think you are downplaying history just a bit. Yes, Millennial and Gen X Koreans probably dont care about this. However, Boomer Koreans who lived through Japanese occupation have many harsh things to say about Japan regarding this. There is a reason why this probably went on trending. It is the same for China as well. Japan simply just does not want to apologize and tries to approach this with wishy washy rhetoric and lack of sympathy. Now, I am a firm believer that we as a species should forgive and forget. The tragedies of war should be left in history and only history. But I am not gonna deny this is still a huge issue. Also, calling Asian Boss greedy for making this video is a poisoning the well fallacy. I am not even subscribed to him and you are going to say he is greedy? Seems like to me your mind is made up but whatever. Edit: Should add when I refer to Japan, mostly talking about the government, not the people in the country. I think most koreans have a neutral or positive view on the japanese as a whole with the disagreement being usually with the govt. Edit 2: Should add I am not trying to use this as a red herring. I think Sana was in the right. It isnt a big deal, like who cares? But I am just saying the history is pretty complicated to not write off.

@@RichArchilles I suppose a logical counter-argument to that is that it only trended for one day; as in it very quickly settled down. If it continued to trend for several days, then it would be a stronger argument that it was a serious issue. Especially given the time it would take for a corporation to make an official, measured, non-off-the-cuff statement.

I'm Japanese and would like to clarify some things: ・Today's Japanese Emperor doesn't have any political power. He is a symbolic figure. ・When you fill out official documents in Japan, you use the era system. For example, if you were born in 1997, you write "H9" (Heisei 9). It's a very casual, common way of writing dates. So, if you were to live in Japan, you are likely to write dates using the era system regardless of your nationality. It's not that deep, guys. I personally feel very sorry for all the damages my home country had made in the past and I truly hope that the misunderstanding of each other's history will be clarified at some point. I've had amazing Korean friends and I'm thankful that they've been kind to me. Japan 💚 Korea Edit: Wow, thank you so much for the kind comments! I hope you guys are having a wonderful day!

You sound like a kind soul with moral conscience. Much love to you too. I wish more Japanese people were like you. I have met many Japanese people and they were good and kind people. Unfortunately, your political leaders and many of your people still seem to favor the “let’s look the other way and pretend it never happened until there are no more surviving victims left to remember or care what happened” and “if we keep claiming and teaching false history long enough it will become true” strategies. Sadly many young Japanese people nowadays don’t even understand why other Asian countries are justified in their sensitivity about certain issues, because of false history they were taught in school. By the way, people know that the era system is just a way to number the dates, because Korea used to have the same system back in the day. People know that Japanese emperor is a “symbolic figure” that doesn’t directly engage in politics. But the era names are literally named after the emperor, and a symbolic leader is still the head of state. The war crimes were committed in the name of the emperor. The imperialist invasions were done in the name of the emperor. Your emperor is greatly respected and is even technically considered deity. And just like the British Crown, a constitutional monarch still has a lot of influence and authority. If I asked you, you would probably say your emperor and the royal family is well-respected and even endorsed by most Japanese people. (That’s why you use the system in the first place.) So I don’t think you can completely separate the two, even if the intention in mentioning “Heisei era” isn’t to make a political statement but simply a remark on the passage of time.

No one brings up what the royal family has done in the past and all it takes is a google search and you'll see they've done just as much horrible things as the previous Japanese emperors but just futher back in time. I think what people don't understand is that the affects of colonization and imperialistic attitudes still ARE AFFECTING many people today. When you are still being affected by the past, that's when the past comes up as an issue. Now, many countries are still being affected by British rule, too, such as in the situation of colonization of countries in North America, Africa, and Australia, and forced westernization on every country but five, overseen by British rulers. That still is affecting people today, but that happened by much older British rulers that many people today do not believe the current royal figures have anything to do with it. Whereas, there are still people alive dealing with things that occurred during WWII. It's the same with with the racism in the USA.

At least one (I think two) of the people being interviewed seemed to think that Akihito was involved with the colonial rule of South Korea. Akihito didn't become Emperor until 1989. He was 12 when WWII ended, which ended Japan's colonial efforts. So, he didn't have anything to do with Japan's colonialism of the early 20th century.
@daveman90000
@daveman90000 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's the case. Despite the fact that Akihito was never directly involved in the war crimes. The imperial throne was forever tainted after Hirohito's actions. While it is commendable what Akihito has done to repair japan's past, as I said, the fact that Hirohito commited such attrocities while in power, meant that many people (specially the victims of such attrocities) cannot bear seeing the Imperial throne honored in such a way.
@princekawaii8998
@princekawaii8998 5 жыл бұрын
Finally! Someone who realised the same thing. Yes, Akihito only became emperor in 1989, well beyond the post-WW2 era even. But the reason why I think the general Korean public are sensitive to this news is because they still view the Chrysanthemum throne as a symbol of colonial rule. The current emperor, Naruhito's grandfather, Hirohito (1926-1989), played a significant role in Japan's military and imperial ambitions during the war. Nowadays, most monarchs around the world only hold symbolic significance, but Japan was flexing on the global stage, competing with the likes of European colonial rule. Which is exactly why the US stripped political power from the throne by reforming the country as a constitutional monarchy in the new constitution that they created. In my personal opinion, I don't even understand why the monarchy was kept. I guess so not to completely annihilate public morale in Japan after their defeat by the Allies? Korea lost their monarch to Japanese occupation. So, yeah, though it is a sore spot for some.. I think Sana was unfairly attacked here. If anybody should make a public apology, it should be the government of Japan, with the Royal Assent as well of course. By any rate, if Queen Elizabeth was held responsible for the torture happening in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising, I'm pretty sure Kenyans would be anti-Britain as well. Except those victims got their day in court against the British establishment. The biggest war crime I understand that still dwells on the Korean conscience, is the issue of the comfort women. Time is definitely an enemy here, many of these victims are aging and let's say if they were allowed to speak and be heard in a public and official forum - i.e. a lawsuit against the Japanese gov't, in which they can be compensated - this would definitely bring some closure to this ugly part of Korean-Japanese relations.

Actually it is and you would know that if you were able to look at the situation from the perspective of a Korean person who knew the bad blood between Korea and Japan. Maybe you can't see why people are making such a fuss because you don't understand the context behind it. For that, I really suggest you educate yourself because a lot of people like you look at sensitive topics like this and say "so what" because it's "nothing." Maybe I can give you an example that you might be able to relate to more. It's like if you posted on Instagram as an American citizen in 2020 and said "good job for everything you did" when Donald Trump stepped down. Or even "you did well" after a dictator finally steps down from his position. In Korea's eyes, Japan is like their Donald Trump or dictator that they might be able to sometimes smile at and hope to find middle ground (after they apologize) but can never fully forget the terrible things they've done.

Baffling how uninformed and ignorant most of the interviewees are in this video. They act to care and be sensitive on this topic, yet lack basic timeline knowledge. Seems like most of them are just following a popular opinion or following the opinion of whatever their parents told them. Heisei era, and the previous emperor, spanned from 1989-2019. 45 years after colonization of Korea ended. Heisei and the previous emperor has nothing to do with Japan's rule over korea, that falls onto the Showa era. They are mad about an era that did nothing to Korea. Heisei is also the era Japan grew into a prominent 1st world country, after being war torn. Heisei is the era that popularized anime, manga, sushi (and other foods), japanese fashion and beauty products, japanese technology & engineering, and many other products of Japanese culture. Which is why Sana felt the need to praise the era, especially being someone who has only known that era. If you want to disrespect that era, bash Sana online, and say that she deserves it, then don't watch our anime, eat our food, or buy our beauty & clothing products either. Don't tour Tokyo or even come to our country at all like many of your citizens do.

Two years ago, young people in Japan celebrated the arrival of a new era as if they were delighted with the arrival of the new year. Sana just wanted to share her expectations for a new era with Japanese fans by posting in Japanese. Certainly, given the recent relationship between Japan and South Korea, she may have lacked consideration. However, she was grateful for the era of Heisei, where she was born and raised, and thought of the era of peace she was going to visit. That's how simple it was. As a Japanese, it was a wonderful and happy post. Nothing, she didn't talk about politics. I hope people from Korea and around the world understand that.

The lady who said, "I just don't like Japan" but when you translate her Korean, it's actually "I very much just hate Japan". What a powerful verb. Let's clarify a few things here both for her and other people who feel the same as her... 1. Your country was taken over and abused for decades by the Japanese. It is absolutely wrong of them to do so but please understand that in those eras, conquest was a very common thing. Korea has not received an apology from the Japanese government so criticize the government, don't lump it together with the rest of Japan. People like you make it sound like the entire Japan is indebted to you. 2. Let's just say the Japanese government does apologize...do you really think that erases all the history between Japan and Korea? Will it be okay now for Sana to upload that kind of post? In Americas, slavery was abolished over a century ago and Juneteeth Day was created and is now nationally recognized as a holiday to remember the history behind it. Why do many black people still hold animosity against the government? Why do others still mistreat black people? Simply apologizing isn't going to fix the relationship. It may help but it won't suffice for hateful people like you. 3. You make it sound like you, yourself, have gone through the abuse from the Japanese during that era when you weren't even alive. Hearing stories from victims is not even close to the reality. I will never understand what it would feel like to be abused by the Japanese. I will never understand what it feels to be mistreated because of the color of my skin. So please don't make it sound like you really know how terrible Japan was when you never even touched the surface of it. 4. Are you boycotting everything Japanese-related including their delicious sushi? Great animes? And many other awesome cultures that Japan has to offer? Chances are, you're not. So you're a hypocrite. You're the type of people who love taking the good in everything and not the bad. People like you will never grow as an individual because you will never recognize your failure (even though you love commenting on others'). I may come off as if I'm defending Japan and criticizing Korea but in reality, I totally understand where Koreans are coming from but just not the type like the lady at 8:08. Learn to take both the good and bad in all things. Yes, Japan is at fault but it's the government, not the people. Sana did not do anything wrong. It's the hypocritical and overly sensitive people like the lady who takes things overboard. She's simply commenting on an era system that Japan uses. One last thing...for those who said that she should be more mindful as a foreigner making money in Korea and should never do these "inappropriate" things that "hurt" the types of Koreans like the lady...what about some of the Koreans who work in America via visas and constantly discriminate against black people saying things like they seem dangerous? Don't assume that I'm just generalizing and making things up because I see it all the time in K-Town in NYC.

If you're going to make the piece into a political piece, atleast mention the fact that Akihito has openly criticized his own government for not apologizing properly to the Koreans or the fact that Akihito is one of very few Japanese political figures to have apologized to the Koreans. The piece should have focused on the perception of what Heisei means to the Japanese, and conversely ask the Koreans how they felt about the changing of "times" or an era, such as the 90's to 2000's, or from the 20th century to the 21st century. Distorted misconception was the cause of this so called controversy in the first place, if you have 1.4M viewers, please act responsible and try to correct the mistake your media peers have caused.

The only emotion you feel is extreme hatred and anger. It's not good to live your life feeling this way, so I choose to forgive, however, most people will not, and that's also completely normal. What Japan did is absolutely horrendous.

Don't be fooled by Japanese people. They pritend to be nice. But they hide their emotion and evil minds. They still use The Rising Sun flag. The Rising Sun flag was the flag symbolizing the Japanese army during the period of Japanese imperialism. The Rising Sun Flag does mean Hakenkreuz for Koreans. Please seach on KZfaq "The usage of the Rising Sun Flag by Japan should be stopped." Japanese people don't even know about Nazi flag and they lie everywhere. So don't believe liars. I don't get this animosity toward "the previous Emperor". The Emperor that abdicated, Akihito, is not the one responsible for colonizing Korea. It was his dad who died 30 years ago, Hirohito. It's pure stupidity to think that Sana is celebrating the colonizer. And Sana's post is not even about Akihito himself, rather it was about the Heisei era that she was born in. Think of it as boomers celebrating the end of 20th century 20 years ago.

It's not the same as celebrating the end of the 20th century lol. This is about Japan's Imperial culture, it's all reminiscent of Japan's horrible past, any mention of the imperial family is considered insensitive towards Koreans, as it has to do with current issues that are being discussed to this day about what the Japanese did to Koreans so it's a much bigger deal than you think

It is not about colonizing period only, but the refuse of Japan to give an official apology. Which means during whole Akihito era he did not manage to “fix” this issue and the apology is still was not given. You can watch more about this subject on Asian Boss channel through videos of one of the last survivors of “comfort women”. But unfortunately, she died as well recently with her dream to get an apology from Japan keep being just a dream.

For one to disregard an event as important as the change of imperial era, would that person even be considered a Japanese national? Didn't she only type that in Japanese? Knets just being stupid again, I'm guessing? I guess it does have to do with the Japanese politics being involved with Korea's past. I can see why it's not a good move to post something like that on the group account. But the criticism is mostly not deserved -- although expected.

@@Neomiani I understand that a good portion of Korea is still mad about anything Japanese, but as I said earlier, Sana's post don't have anything to do with all those political things. People can continue to be mad about pre-1945 Japan because it's true that Japanese government have never specifically acknowledged and apologized for all horrible things they did, but it's not acceptable to see everything as a political message and then bash a girl who practically know nothing about that (thanks to Japanese shitty government who chose not to educate their people about horrible things they did).

So basically it's "You're working in Korea now so stop being Japanese. Immediately" I think in this case Koreans are the ones that should educate themselves a bit more before hating on someone. The Heisei era started in 1989, over 40 years after the Japanese occupation ended. It has nothing to do with the Showa or Taisho Era and neither does Sanas post. She didn't even mention the emperor, made no political statement whatsoever. Everyone in Japan was celebrating the end of Heisei and beginning of Reiwa because it's a big event and even bigger this time because it's the first time ever an emperor has actually abdicated and not stayed in this position until he died. It was a big event, basically whole Japan celebrated it. She's Japanese, so like most other Japanese people she posted something about it and the fact that people got this triggered by it just shows that they simply just hate Japan and probably want her to deny her Japanese roots. I understand where the resentment against Japan comes from because what happened during the Occupation was terrible but they should see the difference between a politically related statement and just an innocent post of a Japanese person.
