I have cousins who are half Italian and are pretty much fluent, and they say it's extremely difficult to understand Italian dialect. I discussed this with them in the context of the HBO show My Brilliant Friend, which is set in Naples, and they found it extremely difficult to understand Neopolitan, which is also a Southern Italian dialect - Pugliese is from Apulia, which is the opposite side to Naples, but pretty much on the same latitude. So even if you speak Italian, having someone talk at you in a quick flow of language can be very difficult. I don't think they were the only people to miss that he said "mamma mia!".

I was in scotland in 2019 and we went north to the highlands (drove from Edinburgh to Inverness and further up) and all I could hear was gaelic everywhere. Every pit stop every shop and mountain range we visited. I barely heard english from a mother speaking to her toddler to couples passing by. I was pretty impressed and 2nd hand proud of them for keeping the language alive like that.

We have a lot of people from Jamaica in my part of London and they're good people, great to talk to. Life isn't a breeze living in Jamaica or being Jamaican in a country like the UK, but they do exude this infectious positivity that makes it just seem like everything is going to be OK. And of course they're seriously good athletes; been watching the world athletics championships and there are tons of Jamaicans all over the competition, not just in sprinting.
