John I’ve been meaning to say for a while, YOUR LAWN IS A TRIUMPH. Tara basil loves the sun, it especially loves being watered at midday and will reward you with heavenly scent. If you’re struggling to grow from seed, buy fresh cut basil with stems at the supermarket and place in a glass of water on a sunny window sill. It will soon grow roots and you can transplant.

I loved watching Crusoe open the chicken coop, Fifi getting out and crowed, then the chickens... it was a beautiful scene❤ Crusoe amazes me all the time. A wonderful day for a fantastic lunch with friends in a beautiful garden👌🤩🌞🌸🌿😍

Basil seedlings are very prone to damping off. I found my germination rate improved by mixing perlite with the compost, sowing the seeds on the surface and covering finely with perlite only. This keeps the surface just at the right amount of moisture. Gotta love basil!!

Basil doesn't like water from above. It will get huge if you just pour it over a bowl at the bottom of the roots so that it can soak up the water through the roots. He also likes distance to the next plant, not planting too close. I love your videos and say hello from southern Germany / Tuebingen

Hi. I love your family and cannot wait for the new episodes each week! I am in South Africa on a farm in a cold area of the country. I start my basil in a 5 litre water container (recycle...😊) with the top third cut off. I fill it with seedling mix and sow the seeds quite thick, water them well and close the lid. I tape the plastic container with clear tape and leave it like that in a light, not too sunny spot. It creates its own greenhouse and protects the seedlings from the wind and cold. When the seedlings are larger, they are strong enough to transplant directly into the garden. I hope you have lots of basil to go with all the lovely tomatoes you planted.😃🍅🌱

Thank you again for introducing us to "LOQUATS"!!! We now have a Vista White and a Golden Nugget planted and we have 25 wild Loquat seeds from Florida. Incidentally, Golden Nugget is not self pollinating and the Vista White is self pollinating. THANK YOU

When it comes to Basil u need to pick the leaves. U have 2 starter leaves and then comes the 2 big green leaves with two small in the middle, U need to pick the two big leaves and leave the small in the middle, This gives the plant the urge to produce more!

Basil is a Mediterranean plant, loves the sun. If your nights have warmed up - put it outside. Mine have only just sprouted. I have separated them into a small clump in individual medium pots. I see you have had the patience to put individual seeds in a seed tray. Well done

About the basil... just plant it in a sunny place outside, no greenhouse needed, and give it some water every day. It will grow beautifully.

I've found the easiest way to grow basil is to root some from a supermarket in a glass of water and then pot them up individually. pinch out the tops and grow them on into a little bush (or separate out a pot plant and grow individually, not in a clump). Lovely video again.

So love your painting of the bird on your bedroom wall 😍. Im growing French dwarf beans, potatoes, strawberries , radishes, onions and climbing beans. I do tepees with bamboo canes for my beans . Brillant excellent vlog again and the view from the farm is breath taking x

Wow ! That Eco flow a\c and heater is a game changer for you for the summer. Plus, you can move it from room to room wherever you need it. Absolutely perfect for a family with young children. Then when it doesn't seem like it could get any better, they come up with that fridge. I would have loved that in my camping days!

How nice to have a picnic spread on your large expanse of green lawn. It almost seems like a lost art, like those old victorian photos of people in their best attire picnicking or playing crochet. Garden fresh & cold beer certainly helps.

Hey y'all, what a great feeling to see some of the hard work and effort pay off by looking real nice. Sharing the fruits of your labor with friends, family or neighbors. Having just come inside from doing battle with my own plant nemesis (brambles in my case rather than bamboo) I really appreciated watching your picnic unfolding and as the sun has decided to make an appearance after being quite overcast this morning here in Devon, I may just have to take my tea outside and pretend my lawn here is as lovely as yours. That lawn is just stunning, John! I have never tried to grow Basil from seed before so can't offer any tips for that, but if you can get a few plants from the supermarket, I find potting them up into slightly larger pots when you get them home, and then taking the tops out reguarly encourages them to do well - You might find the leaves are slightly smaller this way, but as you get heaps more leaves in the long run it works out fine, plus, you can very easily root the tops you take out in just water and then plant them for more plants and so it goes on! *Hugs * to you all! xx

I just discovered your videos. I have really enjoyed them. I watched the one that you are questioning whether you should leave KZfaq. I am retired and had an office job for 50 years. Cooped up in an office. Don't put so much pressure on yourselves. Take small vacations a week at a time. Gosh you are so fortunate to have traveled like you already have. So many of us cannot afford that lifestyle here in the USA. I understand you have worked hard and have to continue to work hard on your farm but you have your freedom of not having to punch a clock.

@@TheNewbys thank you so very much! My husband and I are a lot like you and John. We bought an old farmhouse in Massachusetts, USA, it’s 264 yrs old. We’ve renovated the house and continually work the land. We have seasons of love with blueberry harvests in the summer and tap our own trees for maple syrup in the winter. We’ve recently added chickens to the farm. My John is like your John, a woodworker craftsman at heart! Watching your family is like looking back on our 25 yr journey on our homestead! It may seem daunting at times, but the story you will have is irreplaceable. I wish you all peace, love and joy ahead!

💕🌻Loved it so much I watched it twice. Oh but I forgot about Crusoe falling on the lawn and I did not get to the button quick enough to not see it again🫣. That was a wicked slap, it broke my heart. Children are so resilient, that would’ve sent me to the emergency room. I know for certain I would’ve cried😂 Strimmer…string-trimmer? I call it a weed-whacker. It’s very satisfying!

Pump the water into black buckets on roof during the day in evening have hot water to use. Or for each evening can have outside hot water shower that way.

Hi you guys, you' ve come a l long way, congratulations! Tara, your beans came out great!!! I want to tell you that the whole husk with the bean are étable and delicious, cooked the Greek way, cut in small pieces in a frying pan with garlic and onion bay leaf, eventually fresh tomatoes! Eventually the husk becomes soft then it's a savory side dish! So glad you have reached 100,000 viewers! Bravo🎉

Dear Newbys! Thank you so very much for sharing your story with us day by day! We have watched all your progress from the beginning! Taking the whole yard, building the kitchen, tge tiny house, tge swimming pool, with Crusoe leading the pack! Tge Sawyer arrives! Just think of two big boys helping you later on! I love how you are teaching Crusoe to plant the seeds and water them! ! So caring! gardening is great for the soul! I watch you from Maine! I am 81 and I am an artist! I saw some large garden sculptures made of large pieces of mosaics that you could crest with your friends sometime ! A centerpiece for the yard! Just an idea! Big hugs! Kisses for Crusoe and Sayer!
