Just about everyone who is fascinated by pirates has dreamt of being a pirate captain. Whether it was when running around with wooden swords at the beach, or when booting up Sid Meier's Pirates after watching the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, it is an appealing fantasy to be in the command of your own ship and crew. To do whatever you please, to go wherever you want.
These fantasies, being a means of escape from responsibilities like going to school, work, cleaning your room and taking out the trash, omits the responsibilities that a pirate captain had.
The life of a pirate captain was always on the knife's edge. But for those individuals with the ability, charisma, and brutality, it could win them untold fame, and fortune.

Insane how well democracy can work when the voters are immediately and directly affected by bad policy, even when the voters are illiterate and often amoral
@arcdecibel9986
@arcdecibel9986 9 ай бұрын
I guess, as long as they're directly stealing from helpless merchants and enslaving civilians, in this case. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner. Their dinner was just the most helpless people they could find outside their organization. Regular military units with strict hierarchies, militias, and armed merchants or mercenary companies regularly beat the hell out of pirates for a very simple reason - they're all fighting for something more than plunder, even if it's just steady pay. A mercenary won't hold back where a pirate would, because he's not destroying his own compensation in the process. Pirates are just raiders, and having fought my share of those, I can tell you all this with certainty. The second the odds look like they might be in question, these sorts of fellows run away if they can, or surrender en masse.

I think that generally, it was trust and respect that counted most, as if the crew trusted the captain he could lead them anywhere, and if they respected him he would stay alive or stay as captain. He would need to have capability to retain both. I think a lot of it boils down to something like "ship's culture". Not exactly in the ethnic sense, but in the atmosphere and combined mentality of the men and her leaders that make up the soul of the ship. It really looks like each ship was her own society. Is it my imagination, or does it seem as though the most successful pirate captains were always those unpredictable Jekyll and Hyde types?

If a surgeon had been captured by pirates, never signed an article, fought in a battle or taken any shares, but did treat their injuries and healed their sicknesses, would he be treated as a pirate and charged as one if they were apprehend? Or would he still be considered an innocent man who had simply been held against his will?
@GoldandGunpowder
@GoldandGunpowder 9 ай бұрын
It was all about eyewitnesses. If people could testify that you were forced to be a pirate against your will you'd be released. Here's a concrete example of a surgeon like you asked: Dr. John Howell was forced by Benjamin Hornigold and he treated sick and wounded crewmen of the pirate's company. At Howell's trial, several eyewitnesses(including pirates) could prove that Howell was not complicit in their crimes and he was released as a result. Also note that surgeons would not partake in fighting. During engagements they'd be tucked away in the cockpit(surgery) for mending the wounded. During land engagements, Master Surgeons were kept safe behind the lines, but in some instances it seems like his Surgeon's mate followed the rest into battle and could act as field surgeons. How much they partook in active fighting I don't know.

A captain is a strange mix of a deputy Speaker, judge, Clergy & an an orator all while being a commander of course versed in maritime matters like sailing & navigation knowledge. The most desirable person for a Captain is not the most capable in anyone regard but a jack of all. The Seas throw many unknowns your way & so the best person to take charge is the most flexible calm & collected one out of the bunch. Those not flexible & adaptive enough are not Captain for long even today as a cramped cranky crew will more then voice their concerns if not act upon them! Honestly what is required on Pirates ship is much the same as what is required on any sea worthy vessel!
