In this video I'll show you what "lifter tap" sounds like. Lifter tap is a pretty common issue on vehicles that use hydraulic lifters. This video has great audio of lifter tap with a little commentary explaining "lifter tap".
Note: This video is only to be used for the purpose of giving viewers an idea of what lifter tap sounds like. Just because your vehicle sounds this way does not necessarily mean that your lifters are the cause of this noise. All noises should be properly diagnosed before repairs are made. This video does not explain how to properly diagnose "lifter tap".

You have NO idea how long it took me to find a video that had a clear sound of a lifter tap. I've been fortunate enough to keep all of my cars in perfect working order until recently when two of my cars got this noise. I suspected a lifter tap, as did a friend of mine, but I hadn't heard it before. Or, well, I might just not remember ever hearing it. Anyway, 10/10 for making a very precise video. I thank you for the content.

Finally! After scouring the interwebs for days, searching for a legitimate clip of lifter tick, I eventually stumbled upon your video! Lol. I know mine is most definitely 100% lifter tick, but for some reason, it appears to be louder than most. I'm thinking about making a vid later, in order to document it, for everyone to see what they are dealing with exactly. I couldn't tell you how many clips I've watched, where the dudes only have face shots, speaking about arbitrary nonsense or clips which sound nothing like what they claim. I'm beginning to think that a lot of these "Jeepers" are just uploading these vids, just to get attention or to hear themselves speak. So with that being said.. I commend you for making a LEGITIMATE video for all to hear/see! You're a good man for that! Lol. Take care y'all!

I have a 2014 Chrysler 200s 3.6L with the same noise in the same area of the engine. I just recently on the 14th of this month got the car and a day later caught this noise happening. The mechanic at the car lot I was told said the car is fine and everything checks out. Total lie and definitely not certified. This car to buy is $15900 and with the financing it's costing me a crazy $ 25,717.28 dollars to pay off not including the crazy $300 a month for insurance. I have no credit and that's why. Came with the basic 2 year plan warranty so hopefully they will fix this issue that could cost me thousands more in the future. Thank you for showing this.

Had what I believe was lifter tap on my old car, 94 grand am. It happened immediately after an oil change. The oil pressure light came on too, which was a bit frightening. Fixed it by simple giving the engine a very slight rev! No light, no noise.
@JulianA-tr6pt
@JulianA-tr6pt Жыл бұрын
@@BlueRage Well, I filled the filter to the brim, and it never happened during any other oil change. Of course there's some oil in the engine that drains as you pull the filter, but I've never experienced a pressure light come on stay after idling for a little, combined with the tapping. Oil pressure typically builds almost instantly. In retrospect it probably would've corrected itself idling, but a quick, mild rev instantly did the trick.

@ribama1
@ribama1 2 жыл бұрын
if the sound is lifter tap you can try taking the revs to about 3000 and holding steady for a couple of minutes. This will often pump oil into the hydraulic lifters and stop the tap. If you mainly do short drives it's likely to come back, but if that works, at least you know its lifter tap and you can try a flush and then an additive for lifters. great job picking up the sound in this video!

Most engines built after 1980 have hydraulic lifters or lash adjusters such as the Mitsubishi-Chrysler 3.0L seen here in this video. Sometimes they develop a lifter noise that is from lifter bore wear, lifter plunger bore wear, or dirty lifter bores. What you can do first before anything else, is put 1 liter of old style ATF Dexron Type III in the engine, run it at idle until it is warmed up -then drive the car around the block for 5 minutes. After this, shut the engine off, wait a few hours for it to cool down. Now start it up again and idle till warmed up, drive it around the block again for 5 minutes, and then promptly change the oil as normal. Sometimes the high detergency of the ATF can knock the contaminants loose in the lifter bores and free them up which gets rid of the lifter noise. As an alternative you could also just change your oil with penzoil platinum synthetic, it also has a high detergent content and may be able to free up stuck lifters over time (the service period). You could also do both. This may or may not work depending on what is actually wrong with your engine, but its cheap and worth a try. PLEASE NOTE: if you try the ATF method, DO NOT drive your vehicle under any heavy load while the ATF is in the engine, only a light, grandma style "easy does it" drive around the block. Its also worth mentioning there are other options such as seafoam engine oil flush.

U don't mean warm it up and drive it around the block with only just 1 liter of ATF dex 3 and no oil at all right ?
@gidderman
@gidderman Ай бұрын
@@b-bitter91 Lol, certainly not. *You would need to use the correct amount of engine oil the vehicle calls for*, -but substitute 1L of said oil with 1L ATF. This is an older method, may not be the best way for modern vehicles. Use these methods at your own discression, if you are not sure of what you are doing, it is best to consult a mechanic, or mechanic buddy who knows what he is doing!

One thing you can do BEFORE you replace a lifter: My Xterra was doing this last year after I did my timing belt change so when it was time to change the oil, I poured half a bottle of Seafoam in the oil crankcase, drove it a hundred 55 miles one way, then another back home. Noticed the ticking went away and let it hot soak in the garage. Changed the old oil out then put in new. Almost a year later and it still hasn't come back. If this doesn't work for you, then I'd recommend changing the lifter and be sure to bleed them first.

SEA FOAM is the snake oil that cures all for the automotive industry. People add that stuff in the engine and then watch smoke coming out from the exhaust thinking that stuff is cleaning the engine. In fact it's just burning itself and smoking while ruining catalytic converters. Of course many people who use that trash put it in older engines that's experiencing problems. When the cat converter goes shortly after they think well it's old age. You don't believe me? Go ahead and add SEA FOAM to a brand new car engine and watch smog coming out the tail pipe. I thought the noise coming from my Boxer engine with almost 140,000 was a lifter tap - this confirms it. Thanks for the video. It only does it when cold. After one minute it goes away and does not come back. Does this mean the lifter is starting to go and as long as I don't push the engine for the first few minutes (which is a good thing in any case) it can go another 50,000 miles without problem? Obviously if it is like this engine and constantly happening I will need new lifters. Thank you to anyone who knows how long they last in this situation (approximately).

I had a 1990 Dodge Dynasty with this same engine in it. It made the same exact noise, along with some interesting oil pump noises. Because of the oil pump issues it struggled with oil pressure. I never tried to fix it because I saw no point in tearing apart the engine from a $500 car. Believe it or not that car made it at least 2 1/2 years before it started running into major problems.

I have a 77 f150 that sat for 15 years. I got it running and it sounded fine but goosed it a little and now I have that lifter clicking noise on top that I checked with a stethoscope. I've heard of adding a little diesel to the oil, running it a little, then changing the oil. Any comments on that?

People used to do it all the time. I've used a bit of transmissions fluid before to achieve the same goal. Transmissions fluid has a lot of detergent in it and does a great job of cleaning things out. Not saying it's good or the best thing to do to your vehicle.

I have a Chrysler 300 with a 2.7 V6. I have the same noise and the throttle response can be pretty awful, even after treating it with Marvel Mystery Oil. The noise usually goes away after I get on the highway and floor it, but sometimes it just goes away on it's own. As for the throttle response, the car takes off on some days, but other days the car won't pick up much at all and then immediately picks up 3000 to 4000 RPM when I apply a bit more gas. I went to the dealership and they tried to say I needed a whole new engine ($7000!). Are the lifters the problem or is it something more severe in my case?

@BarboursAutoHelp
@BarboursAutoHelp 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't fix this problem. It isn't my vehicle. You'll need to confirm what is making the noise first. Once you figure that out you'll need to determine what caused it. If it's a bad part replace it. Or, if something else is causing it, maybe low oil pressure, then you'll need to fix that.

@@King-Star9402 I have just sprayed mine too with wd40. Only two of the lifters were stuck. I had to use magnets, to keep trying to lift them up nd down, as I sprayed wd40, in order to allow proper penetration into other areas. I left it till the next morning. I'd try nd flush the engine first, replace the filter, and then see how it goes.

@@jayf1133 Actually it was the crank shaft that went, & I needed a whole new engine so if I were you I'd get it to the nearest dealer ASAP because if it's the same thing as mine your engine will simply conk out like mine did.
