That second stage I didn't really like, although it produced some marvelous games. The Mexico 86 2nd stage was probably better. But the 24 teams competition is definitely better.

Yes and it's even more important from the political standpoint as the polish supporters had "Solidarnosc"-Banners in the stadium that led to the fall of the steel curtain seven years later...i hope we' ll see Poland back in (at least) a semifinal of a tournament. Could even be this weekend in the Nations League if things turn out right. Last semifinal(and final afterwards) was at the Olympics in Barcelona, so also in Spain, in 1992. They missed out by a single penalty against Portugal to play the EURO 2016 semifinal against Wales back then, would've been a surprising finalist anyway against France then... the EURO&Nations League Semis are missing in the CV of the Polish FA so far , and Lewandowski won't finish his career without at least a medal in an international competition, i guess. 2024 Olympics in Paris would also be ideal as it would mark the 100th anniversary since Poland's first appearance at an international tournament. Coincidently it was the Olympics at the same city in 1924 then...that would be a perfect (probably) international career ending outcome if Poland and Lewandowski get a Top Three finish there. It's probably easier than in the Euros or World Cup for Poland at this moment. But , who knows , let's wait and see what Sunday and Wednesday in the Nations League brings...

Tarso Ribeiro Yeah first Kostadinov (sorry if it's not the correct writing) qualified Bulgaria at the very last minute against France, then Stoichkov and Letchkov's header produced an incredible surprise by eliminating the champion's Germany, Bulgaria would finish 4th and Stoichkov would be golden shoe (along with Oleg Salenko) and then ballon d'or the same year. I think it was the best year in Bulgarian football ever and surely for many decades to come
