The title says reaction and analysis. For people that sing and want to learn and become better singers this is very helpful. I don’t understand why everyone is so offended. Maybe they are used to reaction videos where people just react and talk about how amazing she is. This is an analysis as well. Not a criticism but an analysis.

This girl is the ultimate in professionalism. I havent seen style and such a natural singing style since Ella Fitzgerald. This girl adores jazz and it shows. This is also such an original take on a great classic that it takes ones breath away. I saw Ella live back in the 60's so when this little child sang 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' I sat and cried with pure joy.

I can't stop watching this performance. Not only is her singing both angelic and heartbreaking at the same time, when Angelina opens her mouth and the most effortlessly glorious sound comes forth. That voice echo in my soul. Breathtaking! Her voice is like a hummingbird floating around a feeder: You are hesitant to make a move, or speak a word otherwise it will vanish; it is like vapor appearing before your eyes: once there, all too soon gone. Hypnotic and mesmerizing! just a perfect performance!

I can't criticize the good doctor, it's his professional judgement and opinion he is giving. I'm 78, and have been a music listener all my life. In all those years I never once "rated" the technical aspects of song I listened to, likely because I'm not qualified to do so, so either I like it or I don't. It's been real simple for me. Here's what I know about Angelina. She makes me weep, she reaches my soul, she can tear my heart out, she makes me smile, she takes me with her to her "endless" place when she sings so she's not alone there, her voice IS the music, no accompaniment required, I hear her sing and more than that I "feel" her sing, I love her humility, I love her generosity, I love her dedication. In 78 years, no other vocalist has affected me like Angelina -none! That's something that cannot be changed by any amount of vocal technical perfection.

Absolutely! Every song written comes from the heart and soul of someone... she has the unique ability to be able to find the soul in the words of the song. Even more important she feels it and you feel it just by listening. That is the mark of the best musicians and writers.. I’ve been playing music since I was 11 and am 74 now and still playing, writing and listening. To say I am impressed is an understatement. I rarely have goose bumps and tears listening to music but I have both with Angelina most every time. Love A Million Miles and her book... I pray everyday for her and hope she stays on the path she’s on now and not follow some of our supposedly talented singers. I could and do listen to her everyday. She is so calming!!! When you can shut down the voices in a huge auditorium Of screaming people as she did in AGT Simply by raising a mic to your mouth you have power, so much power!! A singer like Angelina doesn’t need filthy lyrics, a screaming voice, or Dirty dancing half dressed!!!! All she needs is a Mic and a stool, a piano or guitar and the people will come and listen and feel the real power of music!!!!

I have never seen her nervous, or hesitant for any performance. This includes on Norway's Got Talent. She once said she gets nervous doing other things, but singing feels like where she should be. I probably get more nervous for her in these situations than she ever will. She arranges all her own stuff. So she re-arranged this to fit the time constraints. I guess the remaining members of Queen saw the performance and re-tweeted it to all their followers. Which probably explains the 10 million plus downloads in the first 2-3 days. They had to take it down so the other acts would get some play. Never had happened before. Just for laughs and giggles you should watch her performances on the Norway shows. She does an accapella version of Billie Holiday's 'I'm A Fool To Want You' that a 7 year old shouldn't be able to do. Thanks for the reaction.

Loved your analysis- very in depth and professional and I learned a lot. The fact that she was also the one who re-arranged this song herself and 'made it her own' shows that it is not just the physical vocals of this young girl, but the maturity of her mind and organic creativity to work with the canvas and palette of the song and music. And to top it off, she is now writing her own original music. As stated, she is a very calm and introspective person-not a giddy early teen-ager. She knows what she wants and is supremely driven to be the best she can be. Look out music industry!

I get it that you’re doing a technical analysis of her vocal abilities and stage presence. What I missed in your reaction was recognition of her artistry. Perhaps that’s a casualty of stopping the video numerous times to comment on smaller components. Your analysis of her a cappella opening asked if she was unsteady in her tone. What you missed, I believe, is that the quiet, non-traditional opening of a very famous song mesmerized the audience. You could hear a pin drop throughout her performance. Her style, her spacing, and the richness of her voice draws in the audience. That’s what her singing always does to me. You don’t even want to applaud during the performance because you’re hooked right away and don’t want to miss anything. I have no doubt your technical analysis is spot on, but her technique and style is in support of the overall artistry of her performances. The best description of the audience and judges reaction was that they were stunned at the beauty of the performance as a whole: the arrangement, the style, the voice, and the originality. The whole, as is said, is more than the sum of its parts. That is my immediate reaction to your analysis.
@bi1iruben
@bi1iruben 4 жыл бұрын
johnvasi I agree with all of what you said, and yet beg to differ. Lots of other vocal coaches have already discussed in past few weeks the emotional aspects of this song and how this is a very different interpretation (that I believe she arranged herself). This analysis is thus refreshing in looking at the poise and performance, and some of the more subtle aspects that other vocal coaches have glossed over. This is a collection of winners from previous shows, so the egotistical arrogant karaoke singers of the audition stages are long gone, but Dr Reynolds is spot on in looking at stage presence and persona - we warm to her before she starts to sing - she is more delighted to meet the judges and have this opportunity, than she is in being big headed and let us know that she assumes she has enormous talent having won one national competition aged 7. One only has to look at her singing "I put a spell on you" aged 10 to see her confidence and intrinsic musicality (even if some of the stylistic choices she made at the time were a little cliché and forced to work around the limitations of a 10 year old's voice).

The acapella opening was mind-blowing. You said we don't know yet. I disagree. When I first heard this performance it was the first thing I heard Angelina do, I was looking at top 10 golden buzzers on KZfaq. Never heard of her. Heard this opening line, and was shocked, didn't know what I was hearing. It pulled me in and made me lean forward in my chair even though I was wearing headphones.( I see you're not wearing headphones, that could be part of it.) Watched the rest of video, and I've spent the last month listening to every version of every cover and every original song she's done, impatient for what is to come. I've only listened as far as the opening line in your reaction so I will be adding to this comment after I go back and listen to the rest. I'm back. I've been a professional guitarist/vocalist for 40 years, and the last time I heard a voice that moved me like this was Linda Ronstadt when I was maybe 12. Well, I guess it happened again in the nineties when I heard Chris Cornell, but anyway this is a voice that only comes around maybe a couple times in a lifetime, and she's barely old enough to be a professional. I realize what you're doing here is trying to help new performers figure out their own way to make their mark, but using AJ as an example is kind of like telling a young violinist to study Paganini. Maybe start with something attainable.

Nice to see you react to "our" Angelina, the everyday girl with the awesome voice. She wants to be a star she sais, but I think first of all wants to share her music with a lot of people. I don't think she wants to be a huge "superstar", she is a bit shy, but she lives her life on stage. She is an awesome human being, that fans just want to give a hug. One of the best Jazz singers today, and she have a big versitality. Some say she reach 4 octaves, some sais 5, I think it is somewhere between that.

Of course, I'm a fan. When she was very young she said she was never afraid when she sings, that she goes someplace "endless" that is "pure happiness." It's so much fun to watch someone who was born to sing. The music is in her and she is in the music. She has always had the capacity to reach the emotional heart of a song, even when she was far to young to have that emotional maturity herself. It's mysterious. She can find the sadness in a Queen song that his band mates said was about Freddie's impending death, but the band couldn't talk or sing about (I mean they could sing the words, but they had to make them loud and hard).

Sharing his knowledge and experience in how to perform by using different singers and their styles as examples and going through step by step on how they achieve a certain sound, their body language, how they interact with the audience, gives people tools they need to be better performers. Even with Angelina's natural abilities she still had vocal training. We may not understand all the details, but those who do will benefit from this reaction. You miss a lot sitting on your high horse criticism and completely missing the talent, skill, unique voice, the love. You judged her without knowing her. Lazy of you. Look up wabi sabi.

I enjoyed your reaction comments breakdown analysis on a performer's qualities. In my opinion Angelina Jordan is a god's gifted super special super star child entertainer. She has this very unique star quality as a performer and a very very rare talent. She's not just entertaining her generation gap but entertaining people from all walks of life and that is pretty amazing for child at such a young age. I've seen and listen to the best of the best and from all the rest and now i'm looking at the most very best of the best and from all the rest and the rest is going to be (HERSTORY) history. she is the Queen of Music .

I really liked your analysis, but to be honest, it was a bit like watching a physics teacher try to explain love. I know this is what you do, so I totally understand. But as someone that is very familiar with all of Angelina's vast library of performances, I think Angelina has a certain rare "something" that you just can't put into definitions and mechanics. Someone could spend decades learning all the stuff in books about singing, and never be able to draw in a listener and make them feel the song like Angelina can. I really hope to see you check out more of her stuff. If your goal is to create more people that can sing like Angelina, I'm all for it... although (as previously stated) I don't think this is something you can teach. But I would enjoy seeing more of your take on her :)

you contradict yourself. Not to be hostile, but your statement at the end contradicts how you began. If you feel its like a physics teacher explain love, explaining something that can't be taught, it means its a waste of time to you. So, why would you "enjoy seeing more of his take on her"?

Hey, Marc! You are a Dr. You know what you are talking about and you are very thorough. Your reactions are always valuable, to the young viewers who are learning about the art of singnig to the older fans who want to know why they are so attracted to some singers and who don t know exactly why or can t express with the right words why they feel the way they are. Here, check in the box for Angelina who walked on the stage as a confident performer. Optimistic Angelina: check in the box! She is deliberate and artistic in her style: check in the box! Warmth, richness and fullness of the voice: check in the box! Still relaxed in her body and at ease with it: check in the box!

If it's possible, my eyelashes get goosebumps, whenever I hear Angelina sing & Freddie Mercury would be so proud 💕 She sews her own clothes, is instrumental in the arrangements of the cover songs she sings, & has a huge heart, going barefoot in remembrance of the girl she met once, who had no shoes, What can I say, **WOW** Side note: A lot of people say how much she sounds like Amy Winehouse, Billie Holiday, & Nora Jones, & she does, however, for me, I get a beautiful renaissance feeling of the late great, Bessie Smith 💕💕💕 GREAT REACTION & enjoyed your breakdown of her amazing voice !!!

If you read the essay you'll see that this is not a criticism, it's acknoledgment of a bittersweet truth. BTW I really liked hearing your explainations, and descriptions of what she was doing and how she does it. Thank you, I wish I had met you when I still had a voice.

Even though many of us only "sang" in our earlier lives, know that the spirit Anglina personifies would graciously allow a few notes and a few breathes in each of her performances to be "deliverances" of your earlier voice! Remember, one of her stated life goals is to sing to the world. And, with her generous nature, she will share some of your voice "to the whole world." So great for both of you!

Excellent analysis for those performers in the music industry. Thank you for sharing. Which leaves the question as to how she has been able to perform in this way since she was so young? I have been listening to Angelina, every day, for the last 6 years and am always "blown away" by her talent, not just singing, but arranging, playing musical instruments, designing, painting, languages, etc. If you have a few minutes please watch her another of her cover songs. It is intriguing to watch her sing a heartfelt song and once she is finished, her countenance changes/relaxes as she smiles and waves. As a great grandmother of 74 with cancer, I hope I live to see her fulfill her dream of singing for the world.

This was a refreshing reaction. Honest yet not offensive to her fans. As a fan, I know everything she did vocally was intentional, her aptitude is off the charts, but her performer self could use a boost from folks like yourself from time to time. With that said, she just turned fourteen and already she's in my top 3 of singers all time. That's just crazy. Crazy good. Great reaction. Cheers!

Dr. Marc, I know it's easy to get overwhelmed with the negativity. Keep in mind that there are a lot of positive reactions in these comments too. I would wager that they are just as many of those as the negative ones. Let them go somewhere else. Keep doing what you do.

I agree, that the breathing technic is the most important key for her amazing peformances even in the past. Then, of course, her unique tone. For me, it always feels like a warm and cozy hug when I listen to her. The way you are able to explain all the technical aspects, without losing the respect for her age and the amazement for her capability, makes this reaction to one of the best I've seen so far. Same level as Rick Beatos analysis of ( for example ) " Tool" . I beg your pardon for the way I'm writing, but it's not my native language ;-) Greetings from Germany PS: please react to her new AGT performance. For me, it's even better

She's NOT doing anything "purposely", I don't think she knows any theory or has had any professional formal training worth mentioning - she internalized it when she was 2, so it's all in its fullness just flowing out of her complete God-given wholesome talent.

I listened to you way back when and, honestly, I couldn't make it through the entire video and I don't believe I was the only one. Marc, this doesn't mean I don't respect your knowledge and the help you can provide for young singers. But your technical explanations about what Angelina was doing should have provided evidence to you that she is not a normal child singer. In fact, I believe some singers are never able to master techniques like she has in their whole careers! A simple, "wow", would have sufficed halfway through her performance to acknowledge the unbelievable talent she was presenting to the world. I did see, after she belted out that very high note, you gulped, admitting you realized what you were dealing with. But, rather than the "wow", you decided to remain consistent in your approach. I clearly hope that you did help some young singers during this video. It's just that most of Angelina's giant army of followers didn't enjoy your approach to the video and your remarks at the end, although complimentary, were too late. Over 33K subscribers indicate that a lot of folks enjoy your work so congratulations for that achievement. I (we) adore Angelina and that's where we are coming from.
