What Makes Batman: Gotham by Gaslight Great

DC's new animated Batman: Gotham By Gaslight is one of Bruce Wayne's best animated adventures yet. Set against the backdrop of 19th century Gotham and Jack the Ripper, the movie sees everyone from Catwoman to Two-Face to Hugo Strange get reintroduced. I explain why I think Bruce Timm and company have done it again.

It's just a shame that WB doesn't really treat DC animation very seriously. They're unwilling to increase the budget for these animated films. You can see the drop in quality in animation over time. They stopped doing the animated shorts because they didn't think the shorts were increasing sales enough to justify their cost. They also made some really dumb decisions with these films, like shelving the animated Wonder Woman sequel and Batgirl: Year One at the same time.

And they were originally going to make a sequel to Assault on Arkham, but since Jay Oliver (who's been with DC Animation since 2012) left WB Animation. We couldn't get an Animated Arkham Trilogy that could be on par with the video games.

The first world war happened in the early 20th century. Gotham by gaslight took place in the late 19th century. Gordon probably served in the US civil war since this story takes place in Gotham city USA.

@@HelghastStalker depends on what you define as "Victorian". Purely by monarch, it ended in 1901. However, if you want to define it by geopolitics and the world order, 1871 would be the date with the unification of the German Empire. Though this would more accurately be described as "Pax Britannica" which began in 1815.

@@c3wichman Was it ever confirmed that he contracted syphilis from treating an infected soldier? I would think that he might have actually contracted it from an infected prostitute he had sex with (likely in his younger days in the army). He might have "given in to temptation" just that one time, and that led to a deep sense of guilt that eventually led to him taking it out on his wife and others he saw as being similar. Either way, I rather liked the twist.

Indeed. One of my favorite Batman films, with Mask of the Phantasm coming in first, and then Under the Red Hood in second. This comes in third place, and I love it. I even noticed some inspiration from Mask of the Phantasm in this film. Having Batman hunted by the police being confused with a killer, having a love interest save him from the police by hopping in their transportation, having the plot twist of the true killer's identity, and finally, having the final battle set in a amusement park called "The World of Tomorrow," similar to the one in Mask of the Phantasm called "The World of the Future."

Coincidentally I actually made a video recently on why & how the DC animated movies have been suffering lately, how they've progressively gotten worse and have fallen from grace if you will against there older counterparts (first flight, wonder woman, crisis on two earths etc) feel free to check it out midnight, would love some feedback. I honestly dont think DC animated movies have been 'knocking it out of the park' as of late. Ever since Flashpoint Paradox the Jay Oliva directed movies (majority of the new 52 centric stories) have been lackluster, anything but character driven and completely devoid of emotional tension or themes that back the story. Gaslight made a good attempt, but Judas Contract has been one of few that have received actual critical acclaim story/character wise. I miss the old days of green Lantern First Flight, Justice League Doom or All Star Superman. The earlier animated movies were about something.. if you know what I mean, they taught lessons of morality with the backdrop of a superhero adventure e.g Batman Under the Red Hood. I want to see the DC animated movies get good again, but I wont be putting blinders on by saying there still going great when lately they haven't.

It's an OK film. It's not even a Flash Point Paradox level. Flash Point Paradox IS a great film, so good that I could watch it twice right after watching it for the first time. Ivan Hambolu I mean technically they already did with Big Hero 6. Sad part, Is that DC were already releasing animated movies in theaters in the 90s. They need to go back, Or atleast spend alot of money on these movies.

I'm a hardcore DC fan and not dissapointed at all. Why? Dark Knights:Metal, Batman TMNT II, pretty much every rebirth series, DC's New Age of Heroes. Everything in them is simply amazing, far better off than all the trash Marvel is producing right now

The concept of who Jack was was appreciable, but it was kinda trite imo. The character himself is not set out to be an exciting character, so I think it would have helped if there was more of him before or after the reveal.

While you may or may not be wrong here, I have to admit that I turned Gotham by Gaslight off as soon as the Gordon reveal happened. I was just so incensed by that change.

Again like I said on other videos/site, really love this film. One of the best I think in Batman films and in the animated versions along with The Dark Knight Returns. I think DC should focus more on these animated films and put a lot more effort to them then worry about the god awful live action DC films in theaters, except for Wonder Woman.

Batman meets Bloodborne, I need to check this out. Even Batman's cape looks like the hunter garb with the collar, chain, and capelet.

Just finished watching this. I'm glad it wasn't spoiled for me the reveal was as shocking as it should be it was awesome to watch but the animation was a little choppy. I often say DC should give up on its live action stuff there's so much of it and its mostly disappointing but if they throw money into the animation Id like to think that would be a powerhouse but more money means bringing in the suits. the same suits who made the live action content garbage. oh well.

I mean to help not scorn, It was not WW1 that Gordon was in Batman Gaslight, that was the US civil war.Can tell by the small uniforms in the pictures of him in a medical tent and timing. WW1 happened latter in 1914 to 1918. When electricity was becoming more common. In fact the world's fair that is mentioned in this very video is when electricity is used on a large scale to show to the general public.

Honestly I just don’t know about Gordon being Jack the Ripper, personally I think the idea that Gordon is straight as an arrow in every universe from dark knights metal is really cool.

Makes me believe that Gordon always had the heart in the right place, and that somehow was part of him going completely insane I mean Gordon really struggles his best to stay good at heart, but it clearly takes a toll on him, maybe in this timeline (or reality I dunno) the corruption became too much for him, I mean this one had a different upbringing, and he partook in war, challenges the original Gordon never had to undertake

Yeah I 100% agree with the points about Gordon because I’m one of the people explained in the video to just suspect Gordon to be who he presented himself to be. That twist absolutely had me shocked.

It's a very nice movie. It's rather faithful to the tone of the graphic novel if I remember well. Even if the animation is a bit sloppy at times, it offers some great movie moments - not only Batman's, and has some charming qualities. Now, we have to have Bruce Timm flying to the rescue of the DC cinema & TV brands, or else we will have again those dark & gritty & more mature & boring & anti-fun & stupid films and series... In which case I will have no alternatives but to unleash my army of mutant crepes-Suzettes upon this pitiful world!

The first gas powered motorcycle was invented in 1885 but earlier inventors actually did use steam so either way, the bare bones Batcycle is relatively accurate to the period. The first Zeppelin however was not built till 1900 so the police dirigible is less accurate then the motorcycle for the late 19th Century.

I hope Bruce Timm is back to form. The last two movies he did were pretty bad, but I was surprised how many people were dismissing Timm and saying that he's lost his touch or even that he was never good and always depended on others. I thought that he had earned the benefit of the doubt after producing over 20 years of quality content.
