Friends, what makes great leaders great? Why do certain men and women seem to lead with such effectiveness?
On today’s episode of “The Word on Fire Show,” Brandon Vogt and I discuss several great leaders including Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr., Pope St. John Paul II, and Queen Elizabeth II.
A listener asks, how can I be sure if I’m acting out a theo-drama or an ego-drama?

Let it be known to all: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

There was a poem hanging on the wall in the secretary's office in my high school about leadership: "Don't walk in front of me. I won't follow. Don't walk behind me, I might not lead. Walk beside me and be my friend." I am not sure who wrote it, but it impacted me so much that all I really wanted to do then, just as much as now, was to discern God's will for my life and then follow through with that call. Thank you Bishop Barron and Brandon.

This was a really interesting discussion. When BB was discussing Churchill he mentioned skills needed at a particular point in time and Moses popped into my head. Moses had the exact skills needed for his leadership position. Somehow he got those slaves up to the Promised Land. Another interesting leader Alexander the Great. He didn’t stop, he just kept going, his soldiers always going forward in dangerous unknown territory. Thank God for good leaders, I knew from a very young age I never wanted to be a leader….it would have to be an emergency situation… not lasting more than 1 hour….you need a lot of skills, and a lot of energy to be a great leader! ♥️✝️

This was very insightful yet known but not often utilized. Many expect leaders to micromanage and some leaders think they can micromanage not realizing that team effort is necessary. Again some leaders think that they should not be spoken about behind their backs but when positions of leadership is accepted you will become the bull's eye on the target; you will be criticized, but it is up to the leader as stated by Bishop Barron to use that constructively. This was very interesting.

Great discussion. We have a moral leadership crisis in the Church today. The old serpent uses the same strategy of money, power, and sex to lure people in higher positions, including those in the Catholic Church today, to accept the culture of relativism. We are seeing clear the fulfillment of the message of Akita, "cardinals opposing other cardinals and bishops against other bishops," over the lack of moral courage to stand up for the truth that marriage is a natural law of God. It is sacred between a man and a woman and the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.

I agree but as you probably already know, many Clergy are or have been cancelled if they 🗣️. Bishop Strickland from Texas is being investigated and will most likely be canned ASAP. So then what? I say if ALL the Good Bishops stand up collectively, something might force change. I highly doubt it. Therefore, I think it’s up to the laity. We should all Protest but not call it such. We need to PRAY the Rosary and Walk and be noticed. Demand Our Churches FOLLOW THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS but DEMAND VATICAN STOP THE SYNOD OF SINONALITY. IT WILL CHANGE MORAL TEACHING. St. Augustine and St Robert Belarmine PRAY FOR US!!! 🥺✝️🛐🙏

I‘m a great fan of Bishop Barron (I converted to Catholicism recently not least because of him) yet in this episode I‘m a bit troubled by his inclusion and thereby comparison of Jesus amongst worldly leaders. (And although Bishop Barron makes excellent points about what qualifies a great leader). In my opinion Jesus, our Lord, defies and excels any comparison with (albeit exceptionally good) worldly leaders who belong more to the (worldly) category of „hero“. Jesus was radically different as a leader. In every aspect of his reign. I can‘t imagine Churchill (for a quick example) washing his soldiers feet. I wish Jesus wasn’t included in this nevertheless fruitful and enlightening episode about good leaders yet wish there was an episode about what makes Jesus radically different from any other leader.

This is the Catholic worldview-if we are going to be comparative and thoughtfully judge fruits like leadership, we have to start with the perfect model that sets the standard. Otherwise you don’t have any kind of objective scale to judge anything correctly. Bp Barron is pointing out the perfection of all virtues, the person of Jesus Christ, first as the untouchable mold and model. And then he is naming historical figures that came closest to imitating the model of our Lord. It’s very similar to how we view the saints. Absolutely none of them are anywhere near Jesus Christ of course. But they are human examples of what it looks like to dedicate your whole life and self to the imitation of Christ. In that sense it’s not about reducing Jesus Christ, but rather pointing out that before you can talk about “good leadership” you have to understand that Christ is the perfect model and compass, and the extent to which any mere human creature is any good at leadership is based entirely on how well they dedicated themselves to meet the model set by Christ. Does that help explain a bit better? It’s a very Catholic worldview. We have to start every discussion like this with the perfect model of Jesus Christ, and then every worldly issue or person has to be judged by the extent to which is closer or further from imitation of Christ.

From my basic understanding, leadership has to be humanitarian, the leader has to be compassionate..he/she has to get into the skin of those he is leading ie to understand the common man and all his frailities. Jesus had s great compassionate side to Him.He is often associated with the feelings of pity for the person standing before Him and asking for help to be cured. Don't know if I make sense!! In my experience, a member of a union who views a leader positively tends to be more engaged in their work. A great leader is always willing to have open and honest conversations with their team. Union members feel valued when they know that the leader has a good connection and is very helpful with their members to grow and will follow the leader's lead. In the latter case, it's unfair and stupid to place full of personal blame on the union member in the workplace. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. I taught concepts and styles related to leadership for a good number of years and I always avoided the question: "If you had to boil leadership down to one word." Leadership is an art, not a science. General Eisenhower put it best in my opinion: "Leadership is the art of getting people to do what you need them to do because they want to do it." That was one that went up on my whiteboard on day one stayed there throughout the length of the course. That said, if I was forced to pick one quality a leader needs I'm not sure I would go with vision. Vison can be good or bad depending on the motives of the leader. Hitler had a vision, so did Lenin. Not exactly the guys I would point to as examples to emulate, though they did have the charisma and understanding of how to rile a mob that allowed them to get people to do what they wanted so there's that. My number one quality, if I was forced to pick, would be judgement, or discernment if you want to put it another way. The Bible references discernment a lot and Christ used His judgement when picking his first Apostles. Being decisive is fine but poor judgment can lead to bad decisions. Poor judgment can also cause leaders to follow a vision that may be unattainable or even evil. Communism is a prime example of that. Anyway, that's why I choose judgment but that's me. Of course, courage is right there with it. If you don't have the courage of your convictions your vision will always remain just that, a vision, not a reality. Anyway, cool talk. You could go round and round on this stuff and, since it is an art, much of it is in the eye of the beholder.

I think that Vision is the correct word. Consider Jesus declaration that the pharisees were blind guides of the blind. Without vision it is impossible to discern. On the other hand, we see so much praise in this world for the sightless vision of those in rebellion against God that I can appreciate your desire for a better term.

@@pneumarian I agree that vision is important. You can't lead anyone if you don't know where you are taking them, I just wouldn't put it at the top of the list is all. Like I said though, that is why I always avoided absolutes in this area. A lot goes into leadership and as the Bishop alluded to, a great deal of it is situational.

What would be great is a tv series where Butler travels through history meeting the saints in the context of their real lives so that we can see realistically what cooperation with the grace of God looks like in the real life of a saint.

Do you know the singer Sinead O" Connor died last week aged 56. She was a great leader, too. Did you know that she was shy, humble. She would empty her purse to help someone. She was a great hugger. She always sought truth and beauty despite having a troubled soul. Just look at her smile. It says it all . Listen to " she moved through the fair" , " the foggy dew" and more. RIP Sinead. A surprising leader.

Those are great qualities for leaders once they get to their leadership roles. But what about the skills required to actually get into leadership positions? Courage, for sure. But probably not vision. It’s more about a natural drive to dominate others, and to impose your own will on others. Sounds bad maybe but it’s true, both for bad and for good leaders.

if I’m reading between the lines correctly, would you say Lincoln would also hire a “cure me with your lips” guy? And do you think he would also get rid highly needed general like Strickland? “My kingdom is not from this world” it shouldn’t be a hard decision between the “A” people or the “B”people you choose Christ & the deposit of faith you’re not supposed to change religion to accommodate the world.

I don’t think Bp Barron is suggesting that Pope Francis is a good leader. That said he shows him respect and submits to the authority of the Church because that IS what the faithful need to see a good Bishop doing. It isn’t about the person of Pope Francis. We have had plenty of bad, uninspiring, and even downright corrupt pipes in the past. It’s about preserving and honoring the dignity of the office of the papacy.

@@brendamyc3173good point, people like St. Wenceslaus, St. Pope Gregory the a great, St. Joan of Arc, St Pope John Paul II….these are excellent examples of leadership amongst the saints. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, every saint is an incredible leader in his or her own way. But I think Bp Barron maybe wanted to pick some contemporary world figures to draw in curiosity from non-Catholics and show the universal truth that any good in the world is an inherently Catholic good even when the person or thing is seemingly not Catholic

Personal relationship with Christ Feb19 Xenit Pope to Phillipino church leaders org).- Benedict XVI says evangelization will come through the understanding that a personal relationship with Christ is the key to complete fulfillment. The Pontiff warned that the human person "creates for himself a false destiny and loses sight of the eternal joy for which he has been made" when he removes self-sufficiency and freedom from "dependence upon and completion in God."

Dear Word on Fire team: I deeply appreciate all your content; it is, however, very male heavy. Could you not have chosen some female leaders to balance this out? Like it or not, constantly only hearing about male leadership from men gives the impression that women are just not as important in these roles. It is important to have this representation. I know when I was figuring out my vocation this was a source of confusion for me: I didn't see or hear about women in the Church doing powerful things...not till my later adult years. It was almost always male saints quoted, books written by male authors, homilies on the apostles. Please consider this when making your videos? A sister in Christ.

Bishop Barron, you have gone too secular world view. I have only heard the first three minutes of the video and I have to stop it when I heard you shared what is a true leadership. You said a leader must have a vision and have followers that share his vision. That is totally secular because that was exactly what my MBA taught me, until I learn about the true leader who is Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I was expecting you to say, a true leader is someone who lead his people to Christ and everything they do - from living their own personal lives to evangelising their actions are centred around the teaching of Our Lord Jesus. What you said you want to attract people to you, that is not right. You want your followers to share your vision instead of that of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s. Further, if you constantly keep yourself so busy running around from activities to activities, from one event to another, I am very concerned about your spiritual life. Do you have time to pray and distant yourself from the world and the people around and to place yourself in the presence of God and let Him guide and lead you in all you do? Do you have time to quiet down and listen to His voice? Or you are just doing your own things for your own ambition, all in the name for the greater good of people? Remember your vocation is the shepherd of the flock - you need to make sure you live a holy life for the flock. We do not need you to be a worldly leader, we need you to be a true shepherd, a man of God. Our priests , holy priests sanctify us. The sanctifying graces flow from holy priests and bishops are so important to help us and our wayward families to come back to God and to the Catholic Faith and live a life of holiness and virtues because we can’t do that ourselves, we need the grace of God to help us. You should always direct people to Our Lord. Do not make yourself popular, as you’ve said in another video, DO as you said. Jesus says: let your yes be yes, no be your no. Anything that is outside of that comes from the devil.
