Hello! I have a few clarifications I wanted to make. I was totally wrong about Metroid II being the first time Samus goes to Zebes, in that game she goes to the planet SR-388. I honestly don't know how I messed that one up as that game is literally called Samus Returns and this one is called Zero Mission. It's Super Metroid where Samus revisits Zebes. A few people called out my use of the term "Search-Action" and I don't blame them, that genre title is super boring. I just found the idea of referring to a Metroid game as a Metroidvania really redundant, like saying Metroid is a Metroid-like doesn't really mean anything. Although, after I made this video I saw someone refer to these games as being in the "Hunter Gatherer" genre and I think that's so much cooler than Search-Action. That's it for now. Thank you for watching!

The thing I find most beautiful about Zero Mission is how it's designed to be speedrunned. You know that blockage where you need the long beam to reach the next vertical shaft? There are some secret breakable blocks right on the top of the blockage, making the long beam skippable, if you want to. You know the cutscene with Mother Brain looking at you? If you find the Varia suit before entering Norfair, Samus will appear with that suit in the cutscene, meaning the devs intended for it to happen! The whole game is full of secret shafts, breakable walls and other nifty stuff to allow for sequence breaking and speedrunning to your heart's content.
@anomalocarislover7254

That’s the reason I also love super Metroid. It has so many secret techniques, some intentional some not. And the world is built in such a way that you can sequence break the whole game.

@Greg's Retro Channel 2 yeah, good point. I'm just saying this because there are even hidden breakable blocks that allow you to skip much of the content, the most infamous one being the hidden vertical east shaft in Norfair that leads you straight to Ridley.

What's strange to me is that people are trying to change the name of the genre. And just because it sounds redundant to classify the games for which the genre got it's namesake by said genre. Some people have already mentioned Souls-like or Souls-borne. And it's a great example. These games have elements of other titles, sure. Souls games are RPG and action games. But why call them Souls-like? It's because they are more than just an action RPG. They have invented and innovated new mechanics that change the way you approach and play the games entirely! Currency and xp are the same and can be dropped, picked back up, and lost forever. Combat is punishing and tight, requiring lots of trial and error to make said xp valuable! safe spots exist few and far between making each step treacherous, and the feeling of relief so great when you finally reach one and can bank your reward and grow stronger! These games have carved out a genre all their own, and as much of a joke as it is to say "So and so game is the dark souls of (Insert title here)" just because it's hard, they really are a separate genre from other games with similar mechanics. Much like how all shooters aren't 3rd person shooters, or 1st person shooters, or side-scrolling shooters. It just so happens that the name for the genre that stuck was inspired by the games that innovated them first! When people say Metroidvania, or Souls-like (Unironically, not like the "Souls of racing games" shit) everybody knows what you're are talking about. When you just start saying Search action or Hunter gather, people are gonna be like: "What?" or "You mean like tribal people?" Sure, language is malleable, and always changing. But I don't see the need to take away the name that everybody recognizes and accepts just because you think it's redundant to refer to the originals by their genre, just because their name is already in it. It's only redundant if you have to explain the genre to somebody who doesn't know what it already is. Saying Metroid is a metroidvania to somebody who doesn't know will not explain anything. That's when you can use other genres to help clarify, and talk about the mechanics it uses to separate itself from other 2d platformers like Mario and Kirby. But to most everybody here, we know what you mean. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. (Edit) Can't believe I forgot another important aspect. But these games might not be around forever. A lot of people don't know this, but the Rogue-Like genre isn't called Rogue-like for no reason. Rogue-like games are, Like Rogue, the video game from 1985 by Epyx games. A dungeon crawler with randomly generated dungeons that had you start over upon dying. Never heard of it? I only just recently learned about it myself. Strange how a small, ancient game from a defunct studio still managed to define a genre so much that it's name will forever be remembered even if the game isn't. Don't take that legacy away from Metroid, Castlevania or Darksouls. Who knows. Hundreds of years from now, people could be still calling these games Souls-like, Metroidvanias, and Rogue-likes, but they'll never have heard of Darksouls or metroid just as most haven't heard of Rogue. Even still, they'll know what the games are all about.

If you know of the "secret tech" like shine sparks and wall jumps, you can find some crazy skips and almost get a different game from a blind playthrough. Metroid was one of the games I grew up on from the ages of around 6 through 10. At the time the game that I could most make an association with was Contra, and then later on Blaster Master. As a kid I saw a guy (or that's what I thought) running, jumping, and shooting baddies. It was like Contra or Megaman or something like that. But immediately you realize you can go backwards, and in fact you have to. Right when the game starts you run to the right, because of course you do. Then the game blocks you off and you're forced to go left, and then jump over a few platforms and get a morph ball. Rolling around, running, jumping, and kill enemies was fun. But the thing that kept driving me was this need to search doors and crevices and floors and walls in order to try and find that next upgrade that will help me advance, or at least make do badass things. Eventually you find your way into Kraids Lair or maybe Norfair. And all of the sudden the landscape, creatures, and music are all different, and they are ALL more alien and strange and creepy. This game gave me the creeps when I was a kid and I didn't even know if I was supposed to feel that way. After all it wasn't a "horror" game, so why was I so creeped out? The deeper you go into Zebes the stranger and more alien things become. Again; landscapes, enemies, and music changes into something stranger and stranger. Eventually you find your way into the strangest area of all, hidden in the core of this sick planet. Jelly fish looking things attack you in droves and try to suck your energy dry, and if you don't know exactly how to kill them they will. Finally there is a room where a complex machine is shooting you with bullets and what appears to be bubbles. A brain is sitting in a vat, doing absolutely nothing. She is the final boss of the game, and she literally does nothing but sit in a vat while blinking her eyes and moving her brain muscles, probably the ones controlling the machine that is trying to kill you. Once you blow her up with missiles, a timer goes off alerting you continuously that you must jump from this platform to that up a long vertical shaft, and that you must do it in time to get to your ship or you will blow up with the planet. Metroid had solid action for its day, though it was by no means groundbreaking and it was outdone by other side-scrolling shoots in years to come. What Metroid had that was extraordinary to me, was that it compelled me to want to go further and further into it's strange, alien, isolated world, inhabited only by hideous alien creatures that are driven to prey on you and kill you. I'll never forget how it didn't have levels. It was the only game I played back then that didn't have any levels, and yet it seemed like it kinda sorta did have levels. Going to down an elevator into a new place seemed like it was a different level. But it wasn't a level, it was a place. As I said, I had played nothing like that before (I didn't play Zelda back then). So those are some thoughts on growing up with Metroid. The atmosphere always made its imprint on me, and the level design of discovering a weapon/tool in order to access a new place or revisit an old one. Those two components, atmosphere and design, are what really set Metroid and the Metroid franchise apart for me. The movement and control of Samus got better and better with every release and became a strength in the series rather than a liability. Nonetheless, something much greater than mere action oriented gameplay makes Metroid special. Zero Mission, the remake of the original game that's discussed in this video, is one of my favorite games ever. The only 2d Metroid game I hold in higher esteem is Super.

How dare you cheat. You talk about about the amazing music but you sneak in one of Brinstar’s Super Metroid themes. I see you. It is a freakin banger tho. Joking aside Metroid music is amazing, atmospheric and really helps with that sense of isolation. I know you focused on zero mission but the original is super famous for how Samus was revealed to be a woman. Everyone though Samus was a man and you only found out if you got one of the better endings … it shocked everyone … she’s pretty much the original badass female video game character and is still relevant today. Nice vid… can’t wait for Dread.

Idk man, especially Super's Brinstar theme is something that conveys literally anything BUT isolation. It is "too" catchy to create an eery atmosphere, same goes for the original brinstar theme. I actually dont even like those two that much because of exactly that. I prefer it much more when metroid is either super calm (like Phendrana Drifts) or really creepy (Like the wrecked ship). Actually now that I think about it, the Chozo Ruins from Prime 1 are also kinda "funky", but it is not as.. "in your face" about it. It is more subtle and in the background, not ruining the mysterious vibe

@@IAmNotASandwich453 dude you didn’t read my comment properly lol. I never said that specific song evokes a sense of isolation. I said it was a banger so definitely not evoking isolation. Not all Metroid music does and nor should it Imo. I like how they have a mix. The isolation parts have more emphasis and impact that way … at least for me. Of course wanting the entire soundtrack to be that way is perfectly a valid opinion as well.

Overal normal play throughs are more enjoyable only if you beaten a game more times then you can remember (pretty much all Metroid titles for me) the challenge calls 🤓

I grew up on the original Metroid so I have a special place in my heart for Zero Mission. I think it's a perfect re-imaging of the original and a criminally underrated game. It's the closest thing that exists to Super Metroid which is the high point of the series imo.

10:00 Aw, man! If there was one thing I disliked about Zero Mission it's these bubbly parts. It's hard to tell the destroyable and indestructible blocks apart, it's hard to find the blocks that let you fall through them and it's easy to get lost or run around in circles. oof Same with the parts around 11:10.

to be fair, there is a lot they improved on the original, but there's so much that they changed and added, it's hard to say it's a remake of the original. when i played it first, i couldn't recognize it from the original Metroid in parts.

So overall, fantastic video! Buuuuuut you COMPLETELY left out a MAJOR part of the original Metroid's development and specifically HOW they were able to so DRASTICALLY expand the game's scope compared to the initial "black box" NES games!!! Namely the MASSIVELY IMPORTANT, night & day fucking GAME CHANGING introduction of the "MMC1" ("Memory Management Controller 1") in-cart support chip! That MMC1 chip was such a GARGANTUAN fucking breakthrough for the NES as it allowed "bank switching", which essentially made it possible to make NES games larger than a mere 32KB in size (which is what all the "black box" games were limited to), which until this, was the hard limit for a NES game. The introduction of the MMC1 chip allowed Nintendo's famous R&D1 to COMPLETELY revolutionize games & game development REPEATEDLY. Without it, we'd have neither The Legend of Zelda OR Metroid.

Ah the wave beam. The best weapon you'll never use in Metroid. The ice beam was too useful even though it was weak, and while the wave beam was nicely powerful when compared to the long beam/ice beam, you needed the ice beam to make platforms throughout the game, and needed it for the metroids.. So that the wave beam didn't stack with the ice beam made it useless. I wonder if the developers understood that?
