The Folio Society

We asked naturalist David Attenborough and authors Joanna Trollope and Michael Clark, as well as notable editors, filmmakers and bloggers: 'Why are printed books so important?'
Physical books are important for passing on knowledge across generations; and the sensation when handling them adds to the reading experience.
The Folio Society produces beautifully crafted collector’s editions of the world’s greatest books, each with unique illustrations or specially researched photographs throughout. Find the books you love at foliosociety.com.

It's the fact that it's a physical object which contains human knowledge. A physical book is also a historical achievement in itself, seeing that somewhere along the route of the 200.000 year old history of the human race we developed sophisticated ways of documenting feelings, emotions, knowledge, wisdom, facts, opinions et cetera. and compiling that all into one single object, which is a book. A beautiful designed book is also aesthetically pleasing for the eye and a welcome addition in the property - a home - of an individual.

It's very simple. There is nothing like the _visceral_ nature of handling a book. Whether turning it's pages during the discovery, or finally closing a chapter, and it's closing moments of the finish. The information tends to place itself in the permanent files of our minds, compared with electronic media. Books are _always_ on, ready, and ever lasting. There will never be an old E-reader for the next successive generations to read and enjoy!

What a wonderful video! I wish all could see this! I am trying to pass this wisdom in to my students. The joy of reading and handling a physical book is special.

True, the joy and experiences of reading an actual physical book is much more enjoyable compared to all these eBook and pdfs which runs out of battery on a device or can damage our eyes by staring too long. Which is why I still prefer reading an actual book and put them back to re-read later at a convenient time

Please make a video of how your books are made (from design to production), I believe people would really really love it. Oh btw, do you offer a tour to your factory?
@TheFolioSociety

Hi Leonard! I'm afraid we do not have a factory specifically for us, the printers we use are based in various locations throughout the world. We have created films about various parts of the production of our books - a full story from start to finish sounds like a lovely idea! I will pass it on for you.

“Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. Without books, the development of civilization would have been impossible. They are engines of change, windows on the world and lighthouses erected in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.” Barbara Tuchman. Best quote about books.

It is so wonderful to see there are lots of people thinking as I do, I prefer a actual hard print book, it is just better. I can share my books and stories with friends, share new worlds and wonders. I find it very difficult to read things on a screen, I tend to print them out and then read them. It is a great feeling finishing that book, closing it and have the closure that one is done and you do not get that from digital copies. Your favorite author can't sign a digital copy, but with a hard print one can take a book to a signing, meet the author, have her/him sign a owned book, this is better

It doesn’t have to be one or the other, we can have both. Yes, there’s certainly something visceral and engaging when it comes to physical books and detaching yourself from technology that requires a screen and batteries certainly is nice, but eBooks certainly have their benefits to counter that. For one, many people have poor eyesight but still want to physically read, with an eReader you can increase the font size. You can look words up immediately, you can read in the dark without an external light source, you can search through your entire digital library, you can set bookmarks that will not fall out, you can highlight and review your favorite passages very quickly without having to highlight a physical object or write (and probably lose) external notes, you can read extremely large books on a slim comfortable device that would otherwise be very cumbersome, etc. All this being said I will always have a physical library with my absolute favorites. A lot of books I read are “read once and done” type of books that I wouldn’t really be interested in passing down, they are just a form of entertainment, but for the true works of art and for the timeless classics and greatest pieces of literature I will have a physical library that can be handed down, or individual books can be loaned out.

I totally agree. I have many Folio Books and other physical books but there is certainly a place for ebooks/KIndles etc as when travelling or commuting. Interesting fact: I just heard a few days ago is that printed books now out sell ebooks!! and It's people aged under 40 or 45, (I think it) that now buy more printed books.

As a young 20s year old, nothing compares to a real book. Audio books are nice, kindle books are awful but real books are just so great. They are so much nicer to read and to take in the story.

I own only one folio society book. It is a used copy of Dickens' Little Dorrit. I paid Rs. 200 for it. But it doesn't have the slip case. I dont know whether it originally had a case.

Hi! It depends when it was printed - before the 1950s, Folios usually had a decorative dust jacket. Afterwards they became protective hard slipcases. You should be able to find the original printing date for your edition in the details opposite the title page.

thank you for the video You can OWN electronic books. Once you pay for the ebook- it’s yours in digital streamline format Physical books can be EXPENSIVE, actual books require space. The POOR trees that get destroyed to make the books Electronic book seem to be MORE popular than physical books Also notice how many books shops are BUST out of business since 2009.

According to Amazon, you do NOT own the books you buy for Kindle. They reserve the right to remove/revoke the books you have downloaded at any time if they so choose.

I think you're also greatly minimizing the environmental impact of all the parts that are in an electronic device, that is typically thrown out after just a few years, and the impact of the actual internet and server farms, etc. Trees being cut are a problem, but renewable and farming/mining/development is far more a cause of deforestation. Then again I only buy vellum that my scribes use to write my manuscripts. I'm not vegan; sorry.

You can't own electronic books when you aren't paying for the e-book to begin with, you are paying for a license to download it from a server, if you lose your ability to download then you lost what you paid for. You don't own a train just because you have a ticket to ride it. All digitally distributed media is extremely expensive, even $1 is too much for digital media, you get nothing in return for your money. Piracy can give you an e-book for $0 like it should be. Low cost does not equal cheap. $500 might be expensive for an ounce of silver, but that is a great deal for an ounce of gold. Using your logic a restaurant charging $5 for a sip of water is cheap just because it is only $5. Trees are renewable, the real problem is the artificially high population of the planet due to outsourcing, immigration, charity/aid to lesser countries, and unfair trade, without those the population would probably be less than half of what it is now which is far more environmentally friendly than ebooks or any other "green" policy. Don't want a physical copy? Fine, then you should be exclusively pirating. Stop falling for the digital distribution industry's brainwashing.
