I understand, people think escapism is a bad word but thats what skyrim often is to me. Its a virtual vacation in a fantastical land. I'm just as happy sipping mead in game(and irl) while sitting in Nilheim watching the sun set as I am larping as the dragon born. Its a living breathing world and it really makes you just want to be a part of it. fun fact, the stars which are actually just holes in the universe aren't actually random and they even move with the seasons like real stars. You can actually find the constellations that make up the skill trees in the sky.

Nice video (though you don't need to worry about the corn! Embrace it! Everyone watching a skyrim video in 2024 is fully on board with corny platitudes). I think Skyrim for many people (including me) is a good example of Hiraeth, which has been (mis)translated as homesickness for a place you cannot go. We all feel at home in Skyrim, so strongly that it's almost as though it is a real place.
@antiXTRA
@antiXTRA Ай бұрын
That’s a very nice way of putting it! It really does feel like homesickness, hence why a lot of us feel the need to reinstall it at least once a year lol I honestly can’t think of another game that has had the same effect of escapism on me..

Skyrim basically saved my life. During the first lockdown, things were just awful. I don't usually play RPG but I have played Skyrim once in 2017 albeit not knowing wtf am I doing lol. I decided to install the game again and immersed myself into the world and to the lore. Enough to take my mind off the real world stuff. It's comforting. Really. Nothing beats a Skyrim night session with lights off and headphones on.

Someone described Skyrim as the perfect imperfect game (or something like that). This describes Skyrim for me perfectly. Being aware of its flaws I love it and treat it as almost a real place to spend some time in when I need to a rest from the real world. Thank you for this video.
@antiXTRA
@antiXTRA Ай бұрын
‘The perfect imperfect game’ is an amazing way to put it! I didn’t speak about the technical side of the game because we’re all aware it’s nothing special (and is bad in certain cases), but it’s perfect for, conceptually, what Bethesda created, and the emotions the game evokes. Thankyou for commenting!! :D

I bothered my parents to buy me this game, they got me the game a month after it came out and it let me down a rabbit hole of buying it on every fucking platform you can think of. This game has helped me through my most loneliest of times and my highest moments, I go back to it not to even quest, but to listen to secunda for the 1000th time, it’s a beautiful game and while it has its moments, it’s a game that I always hold close to my heart to this day.

Skyrim offers a kind of immersion that I haven't experienced with any other game ever since. The lore and storytelling just drags you into it, and you can go from one rabbit hole to the next. Still, it doesn't force you to adhere to any story. You can get to level 81 and still not have fetched the dragonstone from Bleak Falls Barrow, or you can take down Alduin a few hours after your arrival in Skyrim and then settle down as the world renowned Dragonborn. And then there's all the mods, where countless people have put effort into adding more stories and more quests and more locations to an already huge game.

A big part of it is the time at which it released. Back in 2011, there weren’t many games like Skyrim. Now-a-days we may have numerous open world experiences that strive for atmosphere and immersion, but Bethesda was already on board that train long before most other studios. Another factor, in my mind, is how Skyrim was marketed and how it differs in its goals as compared to previous Elder Scrolls games. Morrowind and Oblivion were considered to be more traditional RPGs, where the character you played as was a blank slate for you to design yourself. On the other hand, Skyrim advertised its protagonist as this badass hero who kills dragons and eats their souls, while wearing this sick helmet with big horns on the side. And I think that idea just resonated a lot more with many more people. I’m not saying that TES 3 and 4 are bad for the way they did things, and I know that many older fans prefer those games for that reason. But I think it’s important to recognize that Skyrim was able to draw in new people - people who might’ve otherwise never played or never had an interest in RPGs in the past - by approaching its design from a perspective different to that of its predecessors. And I don’t think it might’ve had the same success that it has today, where Bethesda is constantly rereleasing the game every year, had it stuck more closely to the standard Elder Scrolls formula.

I've been on a major Skyrim kick lately, trying to get into making mods now. I find myself spending as much time, if not more, modding. The gameplay and combat sucks balls but the world is good enough it keeps me coming back, makes for one of my favorite games ever.

MAKING mods?! GGs man, I can’t make them myself but at least I’ll be able to install yours lmao Skyrim is such a weird game, because the gameplay is mid at best, the story isn’t particularly amazing, the characters are two dimensional, but I still consider it one of the best games I’ve ever played, the world, music and art direction are just on a different level

Skyrim hits differently for some people because in that universe everyone's lives are centered around their faith, people, nation, communities, honor and so on, a feeling of which most people in modern times are completely deprived of in favor of a mindless pursuit of maximizing numbers in spreadsheets. And i doesn't even matter what you consciously think about those things, the fact is that humans are biologically wired to see those things as good, so if something taps into that in an indirect and non explicit manner, then everyone will like it, despite of their real life political leanings. Skyrim gives the players a taste of what it would feel to belong to somewhere, and that's why people often describe it as "familiar" or how Skyrim is like an old friend.

I don’t remember this (at 10:00) at *all*! Where/what is it? I’ve only played the game all the way through once and got horribly sidetracked every time since… I do enjoy Skyrim a lot, for basically the same reasons. It feels alive; it goes on forever; it has history (a bit too imperialised IMO); and it doesn’t just consist of pretty 3D wallpaper but is highly “interactable” whether or not any given chicken, sweetroll, plate, goblet, moth, burned book, roll of paper, wooden sword, piece of glass, bowl of troll fat, snowberry or embalming tool is useful or part of the plot or not. They’re physically there, part of the world. If anything, I’d have liked deeper survival gameplay without the grafted-on feeling of some of the mods. And more consequences to joining factions. Apart from the civil war and maybe the vampires/Dawnguard, they just seem to exist side by side and it doesn’t matter to the world if you’re all those things at the same time. In defence of Oblivion, I like the NPC “AI” in principle. Yes, it leads to the most inane, unnatural non-conversations… but that they *do* stop to talk to each other during their various errands, and not just when it would benefit the player, is… charming? A weird kind of alive. I just see the whole societal side of Oblivion as a parody played out by lovable eccentrics who get lost in a picture they’ve painted or grieve for the rats in the cellar.

@@antiXTRAI was a gamer back in the 90s and early 2000s - then I got into my late teens and got hooked on prescription drugs. I stopped being interested in games. My life went to shit. I got myself thrown in prison for 53 months. When I got out in 2015, I moved in with my dad and little brothers who had an Xbox one in the basement hooked to a giant TV. Skyrim was the first game I started playing again after wasting the previous decade doing drugs. It became my new addiction. I went to work, came home and played Skyrim for hours and hours. This was my routine. And it kept me out of trouble. It was the first open world game I ever played. Now my life is fucking awesome, and I’m still addicted to gaming. My wife accepts it though lol I’m very lucky. I game on PC now and I play Skyrim still, but only in VR. With the proper mods it becomes the best VR experience a person can possibly have.

You’ve probably got the best Skyrim story so far lmao You don’t understand how jealous of you I am that you get to play modded Skyrim vr man. I got SkyrimVR for the ps4 a few years ago and it was one of the biggest disappointments I’ve ever had with a videogame… but in typical Bethesda fashion, the modders fix what the devs can’t! I’m saving up for a new PC, so I’ll probably invest in a VR in the future, solely for Skyrim and Blade and Sorcery Thankyou for the comment man, you’re awesome! :DD

"What makes Skyrim so special." It's special because it managed to sell so many copies of the same game over and over. It's special because one single title has never been such a lazily milked shameless cash grab. It's special because in spite of the fact that the engine barely functions, you people keep buying the SAME 11 year old product. It's special because it has LESS spell effects, play styles, and player agency than every other game in the series. Skyrim is special because it's a D- student who got elected president.
