Totally awesome talent. Rick answers all my questions about music - why does it sound like that?, what is unique about this song in particular?, how did they make that song? And loads of other questions. The fact that artists, or often the management company, object to their product being promoted and spread to a wider audience is beyond me.

The overall Music Industry is a Dinosaur. "Big Labels" resistance to change and trying to hold onto CONTROL has been their downfall. There's a new language that they refuse to learn how to speak. They also make Enemies where they should be forming ALLIANCES. Rick Beato is one of them. Its painfully laughable. He's ahead of the Game being both a Musician and he's learned how to be fluent in the "new language". The sound of gunfire from the Industry shooting itself in its own foot is deafening. The time when they needed to Wake Up and listen to the Music has passed.

I loved the distinctive styles of FM's different writers. You always knew when you were listening to one of Lindsey's songs, you could instantly tell a Stevie song from the get go and Christine's songs were also immediately recognizable. In a band of people who were so often in chaos, Christine often was the glue that held everything together. I loved how she often closed concerts with Songbird. It was somehow...Perfect.

I always describe her voice as floating and melodic but velvet is a great description. A little bit smoky, a little bit sultry, maybe just a tiny bit suggestive, sensual but not sexual, and never ugly or vulgar. It was the kind of voice that could make a man say "that's how a REAL woman sings!". I'm gettin' the wigglies just writing about it. Pardon me, but I have to go listen to Warm Ways. Read the lyrics and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Considering what he might have been going through with Stevie Nicks, he absolutely DESTROYS his voice...like a man trying to sing his pain and heartache away...now imagine doing songs like that for the last 42 years...on top of his guitar and songwriting talents, the man knew how to sing, but also knew how to BELT IT OUT!...Kudos, and speedy recovery to Lindsey, and thanks to Rick!

The matter is quite complex because of copyright law - which varies from country to country but... just for a sec, let's do a thought experiment and replace "song" in the title with "recipe", "restaurant" or "travel destination". Nobody in their right mind would go against someone telling people how great your place is, or how great what you do is and why that is. Nobody would take you down for showing how cool your beaches are, or how tasty your steaks are or whatever... That shows how sick copyright has become ;)

Buckingham and John Mac are the two musical freaks of that band. Lindsay doesn't get enough raps for his genius as a guitar craftsman. His solos are sublime, intricate and like no-one elses. Buckingham’s guitar playing and arranging on this record are just brilliant. From the beautiful acoustic stuff, to these soaring melodic lines as exemplified here. As a kid, trying to be a hot-shot gunslinger guitarist, I liked these songs but never thought much of the guitar playing. It wasn’t until I got a bit older that I realized just how amazing Buckingham is on this record. And he wasn’t alone - they all turned in Hall of Fame performances. It's interesting that Rick did not discuss the incredible syncopation on this record. As someone who's covered this tune I can attest that, depending on which part you listen to (or playing), it's easy to lose "one" as the beat turns around and turns back. The parts where the drums come in are tricky and surprising, as is the way the melody fits with that herky-jerky rhythm part. This is just an exceptional song from an amazing album. There were routinely four tunes from this record in regular radio rotation as late as the mid-80s, and there's a good reason why. Awesome!

Intense heartbreak has underlain so many amazing songs, from Clayton’s Layla to Don Henley’s Best of My Love, Patsy Cline’s Crazy, and on and on. First time here. Fantastic analysis of Lindsey's style, Rick. I learnt about muted guitars and how Lindsey used chord and vocal dissonance to create deliberate tension and resolution. Just hearing the isolated 12-string track along with Lindsey Buckingham's voice just gives me chills. The man is such an incredible and underrated musician, and Fleetwood Mac never would have been what they became without him. And then you team Lindsey Buckingham with The Incredibles Talent of Christine McVie and you have a songwriting Powerhouse that can only be compared to a couple others like Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Just legendary.

You know, Rick? This song and the whole "Rumours" album is one out-of-class master piece. I'm an old (60 now) classical music lover. We, classic oriented people are a very "exigent" fauna. Then, when something special comes to our ears, we put it in the "Holy Grail" of our preferences. Luckily, "Rumours" was a success. Otherwise, no non-pop oriented people have had the opportunity to listen to it. Now; if Fleetwood Mac had sold just a dozen of copies, "Rumours" had been a great Work of Art. And this assessment comes from a guy (me) who enjoys a lot the Second School of Vienna and even hard-core Ligeti's micropoliphonic works.

Rumours genuinely deserves its double diamond status. It's quite possibly the most perfect rock album ever created. When I went to university over forty years ago (and this was five years after the album was released) it was the album that EVERYBODY brought there with them, and that I listened to every single day. Even now I never get tired of it. It's sublime.

Hey Rick, I remember an interview with Lindsey years ago (at least I think it was Lindsey) where he said that they had this song done and in the can and had even pre-released the single to a couple of LA radio stations but without the 12 string! Then they started getting feedback from various people (DJs, A&R guys etc) that it apparently sounded odd to peoples ears, what with the muted electric guitar all by itself (unusual for that time as you pointed out) and then Lindsey's vocal coming in out of nowhere, so Lindsey actually went back and added the 12 string to join in right before his vocal starts to sort of "announce" the verse to people. Anybody else heard that story?

Not a bad song on the whole album! Must've been a really stressful time in that studio! Stevie HATED the line "Shacking up's all you want to do". The others had to spend days convincing her that it was perfect, and none of them wanted it changed. She says that to this day she STILL hates it. (She has also said that immediately after Buckingham played it through for the first time, she went and locked herself in a room with a Fender Rhodes and wrote "Dreams" in an afternoon! Read the lyrics to the two songs side by side... it's quite revealing.)

Phil Gallagher ^^any chance to throw stones at the woman even though the man has equal sins as well. Anyways, thanks for the info. Looking at the lyrics to 'Dreams', Stevie wrote those words with so much poise and maturity. GYOW is a great song but it has this sort of petulant sulkiness to it. But with Dreams it's as if Stevie says to the listener, "Come here and let me show you what's really going on here. I see right through his act. His love for me is not as noble as he's pretending. It's just part of his play." Now here you go again, you say You want your freedom Wow! That opening lyric is such a punch after listening to GYOW.

@@teragram8006 I find it fascinating the way people treat men and women differently. It's the same old story of the "Stud" versus the "Slut". For some people if a woman isn't virginal then she has no worth and can be criticised mercilessly. However a man is not considered "manly" unless he gets as many women as possible! I think "Dreams" is a really classy response to what is in fact quite a nasty lyric in GYOW. Still, I expect to hear all about it from those who think Buckingham was a poor, lonely boy who was turned over by his slut of a girlfriend! As I said earlier, there must've been days in that studio which were intolerable for all concerned. It's no wonder they got through so much coke!

You have to decide which is the most important at the particular part of the song! Also I had to notate the guitar solo to get the timing correct as it's an integral part of the song. The end solo can be paraphrased and variations played. All in all a bigger challenge than I expected! With these isolated tracks I see where I didn't get it right!
