This. Pop is crazy competitive, and the rules are very tight. If you don’t get every element exactly right and then some, you have to try again. Indie pop is a thing and in order to break into the mainstream from it you need to launch a song into the charts stratosphere, or record labels will not give a single solitary fuck about you.

Good point. I think orchestration is usually overlooked in music analysis - most of it is focused on harmony, melody and form (which is understandable, because music analysis has classical roots). But as we can hear, the whole song is basically the same chord progression (with the exception of the bridge), so paying attention to the chord progression isn't really interesting - it's just 6 chords with three of them being what I would call passing chords). And the structure is very typical pop song structure, so it's really not interesting in that regard either. Instead, the contrasts are made using different orchestration and dynamics. Without all of these details, the song would sound very repetitive. Actually, the way this song works is not that different from "Smells Like Teen Spirit". You have one chord progression throughout the song, and the contrasts are created by using dynamics, and changes in instrumentation and singing register. I think especially in pop music harmony and form aren't that important. Or that's stuff that can be learned really fast - most pop songs use a couple of different kinds of forms and most of the harmonies are usually pretty basic stuff (mostly based on two, four or eight bar loops). The analysis of those parts isn't really that interesting and kind of misses the point. A lot more interesting question in pop song writing is how the contrasts between the different parts are created. This of course includes harmonic and structural analysis, but it also includes so much more.

Pop producers have always been on the absolute forefront of production technique.

Where they write and record a song for you to perform. Many studios offer this to aspiring singers. However, these recording packages can range anywhere from $5k to over $10k for just one song lol. So she only went viral because people actually thought she was a "major label" signed artist who just sounded awful. The only part that was true though was her sounding awful lol.

Lindsey Buckingham could do things like that back in the day. If you check out the breakdown he did of "Gold Dust Woman" on Classic Albums for Rumours, it was intense. But you're right, this many layers is really tricky.

But the layering is still relatively simple compared to most Edm... This song feels like the mcdonalds version of that

I hate how a lot of pop ends up sounding so bland when there's so much effort put into making it. It's one thing when "Mumble Trap Single #2050" is boring, but with amazing studios, tons of funds from labels, and producers like Max Martin who use all kinds of diverse sounds, many songs suffer from annoying choruses, unoriginal lyrics, and overly processed vocals.

Making Bud Light takes incredible dedication and care. The product itself is bland and boring, but it's replicably bland and boring and it sells very, very well. IMO a lot of pop music is like Bud Light.

I don't 'hate on him' he cracked the code and cashed in, big style. But if you hear one of two of his songs you heard them all. Max Martin makes music by joining dots there seems to be no natural fun or fun in it. But the sound has become so dominant along with autotune etc,it has become what a lot of people are used to, and now they know no different.

Ok Taylor was famous before working with GOAT Max,but only in country music that is unknown outside US.Blinding lights is most successfull single in US in the period 1958-2020 according to Mediatraffic web page.Max is out of this world.

No one says there´s no work or production value in pop. It´s really hard to write and produce such a catchy song, yet one could easily point out the lack of nutrition in this kind of art. And because of this, of course, no one will remember this music in 10 or twenty years.

I can unequivocally say I hate most of his output, so the fact that I can also say he has double-digits of songs that I think are just musically brilliant is just a testament to his skill and work ethic.

I think, like me Rick is really impressed by the amazing production more than the overall song. That being said listening to her sing isolated made me appreciate her voice a lot more.

I don’t have anything against pop music. There is a lot of pop music of excellent level, with fantastic arrangements and complex ideas, as often illustrated by Rick’s videos. But this song sounds just like plastic to me.
