Speaking of NIN and production standards. The Downward Spiral, after a couple of a bit more crudely perceived first listens, I began to realize I never "ever" heard a more novel and ingenious set of approaches to production in a single package. Extremes, and seemingly blatant defiances to what the average producer was telling artists what to do and what not to do. I think I absorbed it another 40 0r so times uninterrupted during my subsequent morning commutes. I get bored easily normally, but there seemed to be layers of nuances to discover that kept me interested . Pure genius, still holds surprizes to this day.

It really is phenomenal. There are so many great interviews from the 90's where they talk about their production techniques, gear used, and so much other valuable, super interesting information. There's even a GearSlutz thread where Charlie Clouser himself (engineer / bandmate) talks about super-super-super first-hand information about many many songs and other things. Such fascinating information.

I was doing this too in the early 90's. I believe I was 15 at the time. They had many audio interfaces back then that could do it, though I don't know how the computer actually processed it. My computer was terrible for audio, such bad latency in the 90's.

Damn Rick, thanx for these great song breakdowns. Exposes the true genius of some writers. Never noticed all the little sounds and fx buried in the bg of this track, just goes to show how all these little unnoticeable pieces of flair can really drive a song forward and help build momentum while not distracting the listener from the song melodies & performance. Reznor is clearly a mastermind of this technique

Shows what a fantastic song this is. You could make any number of combinations from those separate tracks and still have a massive tune. Those drums are so aggressive. Great job Rick!

Nine Inch Nails has some killer stuff. I love "The Hand that Feeds" but the 1 + 2 punch of "Wish" and "Last" from Broken is hard to beat. The guitar riff at the 0:44 mark of Last is one of my favorite rock riffs of all time.

I love this song so much! The great thing about NIN is the layering of soundscapes and there’s no better way to examine it than with Beato’s track-by-track analysis.

Love this series. I'm a huge NIN fan, and I know Trent layers a lot of sounds into his tracks, but this blew my mind between the crumpling sounds and the vox at the end.
