I regret not recognizing Rick’s diverse musical talent as not just an artist, moreover that his production and technical skills I believe are beyond academia’s greatest. I’m not sure if he’s just gifted or self taught with relentless dedication to his craft. Therefore I feel Dr Rick Beato should be addressed property as such. And a honorary PhD is not giving full credit to his life’s work . Thank you Dr Beato for all your hard work educating us on the magic of music !

I love how you can hear Alanis' anger while pretending to be cordial in the intro and then just lets loose on the chorus when she can't pretend anymore. Amazing!

I agree, as well as lyrically this song is incredibly clever. For example "you told me you'd hold me until you died" and while lovers say such things, it's said in marriages vows, ie "death til you part", and notice she repeats "Til you died" using the very word "til" from marriage vows, but then sarcastically says: "but you're still alive" is near enough saying: You f*king liar But also "you're still alive" is not so subtle way of saying: I wish you were dead. And then explodes into the chorus ... All that ... from just two lines of the song! Yes: Amazing! But other subtle lyrics, like when she says "You You You oughta know" is like sobbing, so she's flying from anger, sarcasm, sadness, denial, revenge (scratching her nails down someone elses back in hopes that he feels it). Incredible powerful lyrically - as well as musically.

It's the thing about this track that hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I heard it. She's like a wounded animal, just such raw anger. I think we've all felt it at some point, and she just provided release for those "not so nice" emotions. Pure genius!

In an interview I saw with Flea one time he said he came in, listened to the original demo for You Oughta Know, told them the bass line was weak, and then laid this one down in one take. Legendary.

I was wondering about that how this happened. Flea is not in the video, didn't tour with them and just did 1 song on the studio album. So he just walked into the studio where the peppers were recording and alanis was recording there. Flea said I can do better and this was recorded in 1 take. The bass line is insane. So much improvising and sounds awesome. In 1 take. Legendary.

It's still surprising just how much she's changed over the years. First she was poppy (with two very underrated albums), then angry, then humble and spiritual. My girl is truly a one of a kind.

Taylor Hawkins toured live with Alanis but didn't play on the album. Check out his performance on Letterman performing this song. The whole band and Alanis are on fire. There is no software that separates tracks like this. I am from her hometown Ottawa and we knew her as a bubblegum pop star so when her Jagged Little Pill album came out I was at a record store and you could preview new content so as a lark I started listening to her album fully expecting it to be just like her previous stuff but wow was it different. It was amazing and fresh and it is still really good today

This song always makes me kinda wanna cry. It feels like she is screaming at me even tho I obviously havent done anything and I don't know her, but still I feel like I need to deeply apologize to her and console her in her sadness and anger. Great song. Truly moving, like art should be.

I love your reaction to her pronouncing the word "dinner." Alanis is from the Ottawa Valley in Ontario, Canada. The accent afforded people of the Valley is highlighted by their enunciation of the hard "r" sound. If you listen to Avril Lavigne she has the same accent. Her home town is Napanee, Ontario - a short drive from the the valley. Love your breakdown and analysis, BTW.

In the 80s I spent most of my money for records. The 90s sucked so much, I almost stopped buying any CD because hardly any song that came out catched my ears. But in 95 there was THIS one young lady that got me instantly hooked on her songs. And I still listen to them today a lot. Not one song is kind of less good than another. IMO the best album of the 90s.

Whew! I distinctly remember being in my late-20s when Alanis released...well...UNLEASHED "You Outta Know." That song spoke, viscerally, to every one of my female friends, and I, immediately. It was raw emotion and the words we'd all wished we could've screamed at guys like the one who inspired this. It was a gut punch then, and STILL lands its blows, every time. Love your channel.

I remember when this came out and was all over the radio. The visceral anger in her voice was amazing and even a little unsettling, which I thought was great. She just put everything into it. And that bass line was the next thing I noticed, so good. I love this video series, Rick, because I would never have noticed all that other stuff buried in the mix; it all has a subconscious effect on the listener but it goes unrecognized until now.

I like the other version a heck of a lot more. This sounds too much like songs that are on top 40 stations. But it really was a good album. I liked "i got one hand in my pocket and the other one's makin a peace sign" But i remember when this came out and it really did hold up with alice in chains, pearl jam , soundgarden chili peppers, etc

I love these breakdowns Rick does, but still want to know how and where he gets the raw stems to solo out for us to hear those hidden sonic seasonings like the FX guitars here or Louise Post's buried, distorted vocals in "Everlong"?

One thing you didn't mention is that all of the vocals on the ENTIRE album were one take. "Jagged Litle Pill' is essentially a demo album.

That’s an interesting point. I listened to it tonight and really love how much Glen had her harmonize over her lead vocal. It’s kind of a characteristic sound of this album.

I distinctly remember the moment when it dawned on me that the whole album "Jagged Little Pill" was a masterpiece. I wasn't too much into this genre of music but suddenly I realised how powerful and well done the whole album was. I cannot help but think that most of today's pop "artists" do not hold a candle to Alanis and her team.

Somewhere on KZfaq is a version of this tune prior to Flea playing on it. This song without Flea is much weaker. Love this breakdown. The evolution of this song is fascinating. I gotta hunt that other video down, then I’ll get back to binging on Rick’s videos. 😀

Both versions are on the album, with and without Flea and Navarro but the version without them was the one that got the lion's share of the radio play.

I always found her vocal on this to be so powerful, but after hearing it like this, WOW! She literally made me cry. This has got to be one of the most powerful vocal performances in music ever. I have heard that she was fantastic live as well. The anger/rage in her voice puts punk singers to shame. This was the most ROCK and roll thing about her music and probably the most rock thing to happen in the `90s. I know that's a bold statement but I do mean it. It's one of those kinds of things that can actually leave you feeling emotionally drained in the best way.

All freaking heart, often laid down in a single take/pass. Raw intensity and emotional complexity, in constant tension with a sort of grace. I don’t think any other album energizes and rips your heart out quite like Jagged Little Pill.

For all the great production and playing in the studio, the song still f'n rocked live when Alanis came on Letterman (or whatever) to perform it back in the 90s. TV screens across North America melted. It all starts with her vocal. It inspired everybody else in the studio to up their game in playing and producing on the track.

I didn't really like this song when I saw it on MTV and heard it on the radio. It sounded like a whiney, screechy cat. I sat down in the record store the week the CD came out and listened through it fairly quickly with headphones on. I was STUNNED by the 5th track. I thought "that's a hit.....that one's a hit... ... ooh that one's a hit." It just kept going on and on. Really one of the top albums of my adulthood.

You can't hear the sniffling/sobbing/runny nose from her "tortured existence" during the song, but hear @13:09 it's really clear, after "in the middle of dinner". That is so great.

I was in Omaha, NE in 1995 when this came out. The radio station received the record and decided to just play it. The DJ even said something like "We just received this in the mail.. let's go for it!". That was their mistake :-) I remember my friend looking at me after the unedited/complete song was finished and saying "I hope my kids weren't listening to that." LOL!

I remember the very first time I heard this track... blew me away. I remember thinking, "She's really fed up, exhausted and pissed off about it." She just absolutely killed it here. The track should have ended with the sound of her throwing the mic to the floor. No one has ever sounded more "honest" than her in this track in my opinion.

This is a production masterpiece created by Glen Ballard. Especially since it was done on ADATs. Linear recording = no time correction & no autotune. Tight track. Plus the mixing is done by hand, no automation with ADATs. Amazing!

What strikes me about your breakdown of the parts is how much subtlety they poured into it yet how much restraint and balance they exercised to allow her vocals to remain at the fore. Before this video, I would’ve struggled to identify the isolated guitar track, which is crazy considering how ubiquitous the song has been in our lives.

For along time, this has been, IMO, the most extraordinary musical expression of hurt, rage, and pain that I’ve ever come across. But what an eye-opener it is to learn of all the other musical elements going on. Really ups my appreciation, very glad you posted this analytical breakdown of the song.

She was probably inspired by Carly Simon's You're So Vain song. Similar "You done me wrong!" lyrics. Both are very good, although I like the guitar playing more for Simon's song.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I hesitated a bit before watching (only for a moment, because if it's Rick, it's worth watching) because I was thinking, Alanis Morissette? But I've always liked that song for the reasons you expressed. It's raw, painful, and real and fit where I was in 1995 so well! Made a lasting impression on me. Now I have a much deeper appreciation of the song!

I remember the first time I heard this song on KROQ, I was driving down the 405 and I heard this woman belting out raw, gritty rage with hardcore lyrics...it hit hard. It was something I'd never heard before! There's been nothing like it since.

There’s a special detail in that bass line, the only slapped note appears in the perfect part related to the lyrics. She sings: “it was a slap in the face, how quickly I was replaced” and exactly after that the SLAP! Just perfect!

One thing I really enjoy about your videos is that it makes me realize all the little changes and nuances that are happening below the surface that I never picked up on before. I can hear a lot of the individual instrument parts, but I still miss so much. When watching your videos, I often discover a new reason to love an old song. It forces me to dig deeper and connect more with music. Thank you.

Rick, thank you for going through the structure of this song. Alanis blew me away with this song; for me it expresses the anger and hurt of lover's betrayal better than any other. I worked on her show here in Wellington NZ in 1996 and it was fantastic. The best thing about working on shows are the soundchecks, they often tell one much more about the artists than shows, recordings or documentaries.

I had to stop this video half way through to listen to the song after realizing that I don't recognize any of this instrumentation. It's been so long since I've even listened it. I focused on the instrumental (which is **really** hard because both the lyrics and melody are fantastic), and I noticed that the instrumentation cradles the vocals beautifully. It's like the words float on top of the music. It's very much like a raft floating on river starting at its source, the waters widening subtly as it comes down the mountain, going through a series of rapids that transition into smoother and calmer waters before getting choppy again, speeding up, and dropping off a cliff like Niagra Falls.

Another brilliant deconstruction. Thank you! You don't understand - this album was LIFE to me! Yes this little brown girl raised on Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire and the Commodores said this album was LIFE. THANK YOU for showing how beautifully constructed this track was. I'm also a bass girl (love the bass players) and I especially liked your review of Flea's parts. Side note: this album has some KILLER A&R going on. Tip of the hat to Madonna and Guy Oseary and Maverick Records for giving Alanis the best team to work with. And of course salute to Glen Ballard. Alanis (as if you'll ever see this, ha, lol) you are in my pantheon with Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel and Sting. LOVE YOU

I remember hearing/seeing her perform this song on letterman. My GF looked at each other in amazement after that.... and she said... what was that. We bought the CASSETTE the next day. Loved this whole album. Every song is GOOD... how an album should be... Not like now, where you should buy cardi B singles because the album isn't gonna be that great.

That background tone, under the vocal-never heard that before. Very “Psycho” vibe. Perfect. This woman is crazy, royally ticked off. And should be avoided. You isolating the instruments shows how much attention was paid to emphasizing that vibe. So cool. So perfect.

This was the first rock / pop album I listened, it changed my taste in music... I like all the songs it's that good. And I knew she would have 5 #1 hits. When Hand in my pocket came out on radio I knew 3 more hits would come. Here in Canadian but she was huge in the U.S also. Radio doesn't play music like this anymore it's all rap, dance, pop crap.
