I don't normally comment on youtube videos, but this is bonkers. The last guy on your IG livestream had my EXACT SAME argument, but came to the OPPOSITE conclusion. American Woman being a cover is precisely what makes it stink more; it's actively tarnishing an already good song. Fly Away blows, but at least it's original. I think Fly Away, for me, is one of those songs that's SO phenomenally stupid it actually rips. It's so overflowing with unearned confidence that I kind of have to respect it. The bold choice to just not have a guitar solo, the absolute force of that last "I want to get awaaaaay-YEAAAH!!!!", like he's really SAYING something. I don't know. It's like a parody of a rock song. I should also disclose that I'm watching this video to pump me up before literally going to test drive a used Nissan Xterra, so perhaps my opinion is clouded. Anyway, nice work, your vids are incredible, the Weezer one moved me to tears haha. Thank you!
@DKHD176 Жыл бұрын
I approach it from the opposite direction: "American Woman" being a decent song gives it a head start, while "Fly Away" is nothing but pure Lenny. "American Woman" grates on my nerves more, but "Fly Away" angers me because it's so stupid.

This comment deserves 10 or more likes than it currently has.
@Baseballnfj Жыл бұрын
@@DKHD176 I think I'm on this side of the fence.. I mean I can add the fuzz guitar or sing over Lenny and American woman is still good. However the perversion of the original meaning of "American Woman" is also a factor here. "AMERICAN WOMAN... GET AWAY" was meant to be taken literally. "I don't need your war machines, I don't want your ghetto scenes" is a pretty obvious lyric. The Kravitz version of this song kinda Born in the USAs the song which might make it worse despite being a better song. This is a tough one they both just suck so much.

I’m not into country music or female pop vocalists, but I’ve been a wedding DJ for like 20 years and I honestly never even realized that there were two versions of “How Do I Live” and I sure as hell never knew they were released on the same fucking day! Apparently the lady who wrote it is named Diane Warren, and she’s one of the most prolific songwriters behind so many hits, that I think she might actually give Max Martin a run for his money. In addition to “How Do I Live” she also wrote the biggest hit Aerosmith ever had, which was “I don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” as well as Cher’s biggest hit “Do You Believe.” Apparently she’s a one woman hit factory that’s been cranking them out since the 80’s. Back when she approached LeeAnn Rimes to record the song, she said that it was written with her in mind as the vocalist. Which makes you wonder how the hell Trisha Yearwood got mixed up into all of this. Well, it turns out that Warren submitted the song for the Con Air soundtrack before anything was recorded, because songwriters are apparently called on to write songs for films before anyone ever sets foot in a studio. They liked the song and wanted it in the film, but after she suggested Rimes as the vocalist the studio of course had to give their fucking notes, and felt that she was too young to be singing those lyrics or some nonsense, and they decided to bring in Trisha Yearwood to do the song for Con Air. Meanwhile Rimes and her producer were unaware of all of this had recorded their version and were wrapping things up when they got wind of the other version that was going to be released. The Disney and the label were dead set on putting out the Yearwood version and refused to delay the release, so they had to scramble to release Rimes’ version the same exact day. It’s such a weird fucking story, and even though Yearwood had no idea that she was an afterthought and the second person to record the song, I feel bad for Rimes having her thunder stolen because some executives at Disney wanted to stick their fingers into shit for no reason. Rimes may have won in the end because her version set records for length of time on the Billboard charts and made a ton of fucking money, but she got screwed out of the soundtrack deal which meant substantially less Nicholas Cage in her video, and she lost the Grammy to Yearwood, because for the first time in history there were two people nominated for the same award for the same song in the same year. What’s even more fucked up is that she was asked to perform at the Grammy awards that year, and she literally performed “How Do I Live” right before they announced that Yearwood won the Grammy for singing that song. We probably should’ve seen that as a sign back then, that Millennials were destined to be fucked over by Boomers repeatedly, but someone would’ve had to notice there were two fucking songs that were recorded and released at the exact same time, and considering that Yearwood’s version got more play on country radio it’s no surprise that people listened to pop or country back then, so the small amount of overlap between the two was minimal-and I guess nobody even paid attention to the Grammy’s back then, because I feel like it should’ve been a bigger deal than it was. So, thanks for bringing up an obscure fact about the recording industry back in the late 90’s, because it sent me down a rabbit hole looking this ridiculous shit up. Thanks to that Wikipedia hole I just crawled through, I’m now also aware that LeeAnn Rimes posed nude for Glamour magazine while she was experiencing a flare up of psoriasis, in order to bring awareness to the disease. I’m sorry to report that it’s not worth braving her leprosy for a little bit of skin, because all the best parts are covered and Google images has nothing but grainy images of her looking all sorts of unsexy. I did the work so you don’t have to, so you’re welcome.

As bad as fly away is, what gets me about american woman is that he fucking references fly away in it. Like unless I'm mistaken, the line about flying away wasn't in the original. It's like he recorded fly away and then he was figuring out what he wanted to do for american woman and he said "remember that old gem from 20 hours ago in my career? let me go back to that well, the fans will love it." Like somehow he hadn't got his fix of singing about flying away that week and he needed just one more taste before going clean.
